View Full Version : Musicals
In general, I LOVE musicals! I love the dancing, singing and experience of it all.
Recently though I have been a bit :/ there may be spoilers here...
Wicked
Soooo many people said 'its AMAZING!!! You'll love it' but, I totally didn't get it. I think what I didn't 'get' was the fact that someone has just made up a story based on characters in Wizard of Oz... but that's how most musicals have evolved right? It never really interested me... but the singing and production was AMAZING! Even though I didn't know any of the songs... but I borrowed my cousin's soundtrack and listen to it all the time. I think I will try and get some cheap tickets and see it again as I missed the second half (was knackered and fell asleep).
Dirty Dancing
Another one ITS AMAZING/FANTASTIC!!!AM SEEING IT AGAIN.
It was lacklustre and BORING!!! Give me the film anytime!!! I do not understand the hype around this musical. There is barely any singing and a lot of dancing (obviously) but not AMAZING dancing, like in Fame or Saturday Night Fever. They spent too much time on the american accents and Jonny (although having a fit bod) was a total minger... and too short.
Baby was ok, well cast, looked like her, but the best person was the girl who played Penny (the one who gets knocked up) she was a fantastic dancer.
Unfortunately I had a can of redbull during the interval as I didn't want to miss the end of another show, but tbh I wish I had snoozed through the second half.
The best bit was the end (obviously) and they didn't get a standing ovation (maybe 4 people in the stalls).
Do you become more critical with age!? :/

Wicked is absolutely amazing. The second half really ties things up together. It's a big departure from the book the musical is based upon, but then the book is rather dark and not really suited to being a musical :)
I love musicals also.
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers - DRAMA!
Hairspray. Love the original too, but they're like 2 different films and I love em both.
Grease - Nuff said.
Calamity Jane - Nothing like riding the sofa like a horse while pretending to lasoo things and singing along with Doris.
Little Shop Of Horrors - 'When I was younger, just a bad little kid...' 'FEED ME!'
Cabaret - So sad. Some fab routines and songs in this.
Chicago - Cell Block Tango is a must. Makes the hairs stand up on my arms.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Twisted and dark.
Gypsy - One of my earliest memories is of wanting to be Miss Mazeppa. Explains a lot.
Nightmare Before Christmas - Obviously!
Rocky Horror - Dammit, Janet.
I don't get to the theatre anywhere near as much as I should do but Musicals are great. Last few I seen in Manchester were
Footloose - 80's awesomness
Cats - Not my bag but quite entertaining
I hearted Wicked.
*toss toss* ;D
Dirty Dancing is choreographed by my old school friend - she's a legend in the dancing world. Miss Stephanie Powell :) Have to go see it just to marvel at her work :)
Oops... sorry Pheebs! Just didn't think it was as spectacular as I expected! :(
Says Kate Champion on the website and a bloke with the surname Powell but not a Stephanie :(

Was it Stephen? If so I think I know what happened there.
I thought We Will Rock You was rubbish. Lion King was fab. Chicago was good. Ashamedly that's all I've seen (apart from all the High School Musicals multiple times, thanks to the wife).

Que pasa?!
Others I have seen:
Saturday Night Fever
BRILLIANT! Saw it with Adam Garcia as the lead *swoon* he is the sex! :D
Was dancing in the aisles!
Chicago
Loved it, esp Cell Block Tango, thought the film was carp after that! Denise Van Outen was the lead.
Billy Elliot
Another BRILLIANT show! I was a bit dubious how they would do this after the film, but it was magnificent, made memorable by Elton John sitting 4 rows behind us (we had unwittingly purchased 10th Anniversary seats and they wanted to buy the tickets back off of us... er no way!)
Phantom
Is Phantom... brilliant, didn't really like the leads, but the music and staging was fantastical.
Haven't seen Grease... and I'm not going to at the moment as the midget boy Ray Quinn is Danny and I can't stick him...can't believe he's been cast the part... surely he has platform shoes.

Chicago is on BBC1 tonight, I'll be singing (badly)!!!!:o;D
Hello Dolly!!!! This is just a masterpiece :)

<3 Roberta! Got pretty much all my favourites here :D
Blood brothers
Chicago
grease
singing in the rain
probably the best I've seen live. Chicago one of all time faves, love everything about it. Joseph was brilliant too with the guy from the BBC show in it (not Lee)
booked to see wicked in NYC but onstrike so no show :(

That's actually the only musical I've seen as a show rather than just a movie, but I saw it with Phillip Schofield. :) Damn! That was probably about 15 years ago!

I saw it with him too. That brings back memories :)

Been to more than a few musicals... and a few that aren't entirely musicals.
Rocky Horror Picture Show - Ooooh Rocky! *you have to dress up and take props though... ;)*
Avenue Q - The Internet is really really great...
Kiss Me Kate - deserved to run for a lot longer than it did.
Wicked! - Surprised me - wasn't my first choice.
Little Shop Of Horrors - Prefer the film tbh... Even with the poor happy ever after refilmed ending. :(
Spamalot - Spam spam spam spam...
Oakalahoma! - Proms special thing - very good without all the dancing. ;)
We Will Rock You - Possibly the best musical for a while. Queen Music and knob gags. :D
Off to see Little Shop of Horrors tonight....
FEED ME!!
Been told "Wicked" is pretty good, might try and see it if me and Daz go to NY in the NY :D
Thats New York in the New Year :D
Wicked is amazing!!! :D

Just got back from seeing Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. As gay as a handbag full of rainbows but probably one of the best musicals I've ever seen :) Certainly had some of the best jokes I've heard in a musical, or even a film for that matter. Performances were fantastic and the story was great (I've not seen the film version, so twas all new to me). Even the stage was better than most despite basically only having two props. The only slight letdown was the music which didn't have any particularly memorable numbers, but was still perfectly foot-tappingly enjoyable. Go see.

Wicked is excellent. It's on tour at the moment, not sure whether that's a separate cast/crew to the broadway show.

Heehee
Seven brides - I played Adam
Hairspray - I played Mr Pinky
Grease - I love this, but haven't starred in a production of it yet
Calamity Jane - Ahh, my first stage appearence. I played a generic cowboy first time round and latterly played Daniel Gilmartin
Little shop of horrors - I was the voice of the plant :(
Cabaret - Some fab little numbers and routines, like you said. I've not performed in this one yet
Chicago - Mr Cellophane and all that jazz are my fave songs
All the others I haven't performed in, but I love musicals :)
Little shop of horrors - I was the voice of the plant :(
At the version I was "technical advisor" for they gave the voice of the plant to possibly the most charismatic student we had. It seemed a really bizarre choice at the time as everyone had had him pegged to play the Dentist, but it really worked well. His strength of personality came across in his over the top "Feeeyud Me!" leaving him as the most memorable character. In fact thinking about it he's really the only one I actually remember...
Was even better than I expected..... Alex Ferns (Trevor from Eastenders) was particularly good as the insane Orin Scrivello DDS :)

I must remember to get myself to We Will Rock You in Edinburgh before it sells out :)
