Well how bloody kewl is this then. A new update this week on the PlayStation Network see's the introduction of Vidzone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VidZone). which is an entirely free service that streams music videos. Sat here on the lappy just queuing up a play list of some quality music. First up was the full length Thriller Video followed by Sir Rick of Astley. Some of the features of VidZone

* Build your own playlists ala Spotify
* Play Predefined playlists (e.g. 80's, Rock, Live Sets)
* Near HD Quality dependant on net connection.

Some features coming soon is full widescreen support. Considering it's free and the adds are pretty unobtrusive, it gets a good 8/10 from me. It's like MTV used to be back in the day, cool

Well worth the install on your PSN account

You mean when they actually had music on it. There is never any music on MTV now, it's always total **** like The Real O.C. and The Hills. Jeez.

Pah when they had real music on for more than two videos in a row was when Ray Cokes was a VJ and Davina Mcall was his teenage assistant. I gave up on MTV when Kurt Cobain died. MTV Died along with Kurt :(

It's epic, really streamlined, good quality vids, only problem i have atm is the rather small collection of music but they've promised to add music pretty much every week so i'm happy.

But music improved. Kurt Cobain, worlds most overrated arsehole.

I don't think he was an arsehole, but my god he was overrated.

Just not my taste in music i'm afraid. Feeling a little guilty about the sweeping statement, i'd like to rephrase it as 'I feel he's overrated'

It's cool Streeteh. I think Kurt Cobain & Nirvana, like The Beatles, usually get very polarised opinions.

I wrote a bit about VidZone on my Blog, it's really surprised me, much better than I thought it would be.

Given the state of most of Sonys online software at launch, i think it's pretty much a given for anyone with a modicum of sanity to expect the worst. This is pretty much the only online service i can think of that Sony has launched and it's 'just worked'.

Nirvana were okay, nothing more. At least the Beatles wrote countless classics. The best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl who is truly, immensely talented.

Tried the application today and it quickly turned from really disliking it to loving it.

Firstly, 3 minutes set up is TOO LONG. I wish Sony would learn. First you install, then you wait for it to load (this took just shy of 2 minutes), then you agree to T&C's (which requires you to scroll slowly to the bottom), then it reads more files (which I thought it had already done).

My first impression was that the layout was rather poor, but after getting used to it I can totally understand why that presentation was used and it's actually rather good.

Videos are high enough quality with very crisp audio, it doesn't lag, advertising is minimal and rather classy.

Aside from it being slow to begin, which seems the norm on every single PS3 application I've ever used, it's bloomin' brilliant once you're inside it. I've already played Destination Calabria twice. I LOVE that tune.

There are a few flaws though, firstly, it offers you playlists at the top, but you have to choose all the songs to get to the one you liked in the advertising, meaning you spend much longer removing songs from your playlist than you do adding them. You can search them individually, which I found out to my lack of patience wasn't quick, it took 90 seconds before the system became responsive as it decided to search all songs with an 'A' in it before I'd even asked it to search for 'A', not good.

A simply option to choose from a sub-menu from those displayed on the homepage would be easier, as would a button to take you directly to the homepage once you're in the application.

I'm sure I'll get used to the frustration of these things, but I would like them sorted. But very nice application.

Just tried it out - excellent service and was surprised there were quite so many songs available. But agree with NW about the layout and navigation - searching individual songs was a pain (and why do you need to press the down button to scroll up?!) and it was quite slow. But still, like the idea and it's nice to have good quality vids on the tellyvision.

Yep, down to go up is annoying.
Having it auto search is great... if if doesn't lag, but it does, so you wait forever.
Having the space after 'Z' and before the numbers is ridiculous as you start at 'A' everytime you add a new letter, only to have to scroll through 26 letters of 10 numbers to add a space, it should be automatically on space.

There is a lot of changes that could be made, many of which I see as common sense, but hopefully they come quickly.

What I forgot to mention was how impressive I am with the sheer number of videos, there are hundreds!!

This is the best thing EVAH!

Created 110 song playlist now with songs I like. This will KILL MTV, The Box, TMF etc..

Firstly, it's free.
Secondly, no advert breaks.
Lastly, it's the music I want.

This is the first time I honestly believe Sony have something that well and trully one-ups Microsoft.

I've had it on playing my playlist all night, it is a very nice feature, I honestly thought nothing of it before I tried it, the thing is I'd bet not many people even know it's available or what it is, Sony needs to push stuff like this, but they wont.

I disagree, if Sony have done one thing right it's their advertising. It's how PS1 and PS2 did well. Hell, they got people to wait for over a year for an inferior console twice in a row (PS2 over Dreamcast & PS3 over Xbox360). Sony are the masters of it.

You can add shuffle. Add your playlist to "Now Playing", then in the options for Now Playing you can select Shuffle mode.
It could have been done better, but it's there.

I know the world is going web 2.0 and social networking mad at the moment but what would be a great feature is if you could see your PSN friends playlists or be able to upload your playlists in some way
