I've agreed purchase of an EOS 40D from a bloke on TP. I don't get paid until Friday but he's agreed to wait until then. Both our banks do the quick payment thing so, hopefully, if I get the payment off early enough, he'll be able to post it RMSD on Friday and I'll get it Saturday *crosses fingers*

Description is as follows
EOS 40D body. Just over 700 actuations from new! (April 2008). Immaculate condition, comes with 3rd party spare battery, 4GB Sandisk Extreme III and Optech strap. All original leads, body cap, strap, CD's and manual etc. Has had screen protectors on from new.

So, that's a 40D body with less than 700 actuations with a spare battery, a 4GB CF card and an Optech strap for £450. Bargain

Really looking forward to getting out and about with this after Matt bigging it up and seeing some of the great shots he's got with his. I'll have to make do with the two lenses I've got for now (18-55mm kit lens and Sigma 55-200mm) since this purchase will just about wipe me out until I do another trip away (I'll still manage to buy Zinc's nifty fifty if he decides to sell mind you - I'll find a way ;)).

You'll love it, a big step up from the Fuji :)

Envious. I paid more than that for the 450D (though that was with kit lens). Hope you enjoy it. :)

Whats this about actuations? Is there a limit as to how many photos you can take?

The shutters on DSLRs are mechanical devices with a finite lifespan. Although the typical lifespan is tens of thousands of actuations, it does give you an idea of how much wear and tear the camera has experienced - though of course there are other factors besides the shutter.

The shutter on any camera has a finite number of actuations. Usually, the consumer level cameras have cheaper shutter components and therefore, shorter lifespans compared to the "Pro" models. I had a Google and found a rough guide:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D - 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i / 500D - 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi / 450D - 100,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 400D - 50,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D - 50,000
Canon EOS 50D - 100,000
Canon EOS 40D - 100,000
Canon EOS 30D - 100,000
Canon EOS 20D - 50,000
Canon EOS 5D Mark II - 150,000
Canon EOS 5D - 100,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark III - 300,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark II N - 200,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark III - 300,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark II - 200,000

The shutter can be replaced after this although, I'm not sure how long the rest of the camera would last. I'm sure, since the shutter actuations are discussed more, that the shutter is the weakpoint and that, replacing the shutter would double the life of the camera.

For pros taking many shots daily, I'm sure shutter actuation limits would be a genuine concern but, I'm fairly sure that pros and serious amateurs who change their cameras regularly would never need to worry about it given the large numbers quoted above.

If, for example, I took 20 shots a day with my new 40D, I would get 5000 days out of it before failure = over 13 years. If I don't buy a new camera in the next 13 1/2 years, I'll be doing bloody good. If the guy I'm buying it from had taken 30,000 shots with it in a year, I would have been nervous about buying it.

My 30D was rated at 100,000 and its burnt through 2 shutters. They both failed around the 50,000 mark. My 10D also failed around that too. I'm hoping my D700 doesn't. I do around 40-50,000 a year. Cost about £200 to replace, which isn't toooooo bad.

Certainly is. I've seen my stuff come on in leaps and bounds since I got mine in January. Not a bad price either! Congratulations Stan :)

How many shots could you get out of an old film SLR before the shutter died, out of interest?
