Available from tomorrow (8th July) on Xbox360 and thursday (July 9th) on PS3 comes DiCE's Battlefield 1943, and features 3 maps playable from the start, Wake Island, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and after 43 million community kills per format, the 4th and final map, Coral Sea. The gameplay features around 24 player multiplayer on land, sea and air.

The game itself uses the Frostbite engine, the frankly stunning engine from Battlefield: Bad Company.
Battlefield 1943´s Frostbite game engine allows for practically total destruction of all environments. That means that you can level almost anything you encounter in the game - from airplanes to buildings, bunkers, vehicles and navy vessels. Take aim, fire and watch the fireworks as your enemies' cover and heavy weaponry explode to little pieces! Use the destruction to your tactical advantage as you blow a new "door" in a building to flank the Japanese bucked down inside, or clear a path through the trees for a better line of sight to the action.
The game costs:

Is anyone else getting this? I have already bought my points and I know Dunketh said he would be. Hopefully we can get a good group together of gamers here, that would be awesome.
For those wanting to buy 2100 point packs for Xbox360, I just ordered mine today from http://www.live-codes.com/ using the voucher "FRUGALGAMING" for 50p off and the code arrived within 30 seconds of checkout, which is impressive.

Argh! Which version to get, looks leet and the price is surprisingly reasonable.
[EDIT] 360 version is slightly cheaper which puts me more in favour of that version
- Unlimited ammo
- Auto health regeneration
- Three entire classes which are largely the same
- Three maps, at least one of which is lifted from BF1942
- Maximum of 24 players
Has it changed much since I last heard about it and that ^^ was the case? Because that sounds a bit pants to me :/
I'm certainly gonna give the demo a go, as I'm a Battlefield fan. Trouble is I've got Sam and Max still to finish and Monkey Island due out next week!

Right well i've bought the points required, going to hang on till i've had a proper go at the demo before i buy however. Also bought a 12 month live sub, £44 for some codes, ouch.

This is my train of thought, also there's that 2-D platformer Epic are making that i will probably end up getting. I know it's a long way away but it's nice to know the points will certainly be spent on something eventually :E
i liked the look of this when it was on coop - but for £9.99 and only 3 maps, i'll have to wait and see if its actually any good on PS3. its all about how many people are on there, etc with PS3.

Four maps, one is locked.
Remember, Battlefield 2 was brilliant, but it was ALWAYS 'Strike at Karkand'. Counter-Strike was brilliant, but it was always "de_dust2", Quake 3 was brilliant, but it was always "q3dm6", so it doesn't so much matter how many maps there are, the best ones will always get played.
Also, Battlefield 1943 has been getting some rather brilliant reviews. I wouldn't look at a lack of maps as a bad thing, but more a guage of quality over quantity.
You guys are slow on this forum :p
I'll probably be getting this :)
Edit: If the frostbite engine was so amazing, why were the destructible components of BFBC such a pile of crap?
NokkonWud
08-07-2009, 01:36
What do you mean slow? Because we didn't create the post in advance?
And the Frostbite engine was amazing. It's not ALL about the destructable elements, it was about the lighting and shadow systems, the rendering of the various texture maps, the size of the maps and the ability to keep a fantastic frame-rate, and all that at their first time out the blocks.
Out today for 1200 Points, I am waiting paitiently :D

Yeah. I think things are normally up at around 10.30am. So shouldn't be too long.
Some on Twitter are saying it's up now, but I just checked and didn't see it.

We just lack the 'first official thread!!!1' mentality of ocuk :p (not a criticism btw, i suffer from that too)

yay :D
Edit: If the frostbite engine was so amazing, why were the destructible components of BFBC such a pile of crap?
For a console multiplayer game the destructible elements are pretty impressive (the fact it has some at all is a compliment), they aren't ever going to be as impressive as the likes of Crysis or whatever. The graphics, scale and framerate are what do it for me though.
We just lack the '**************************************first OFFICIAL thread!!!1**************************************' mentality of ocuk :p
Corrected :p
Had a quick 15min go, it's everything I expected, and seems well worth the 1200 points, unfortunately I have to crack on with some work now but I will absolutely be getting stuck into that later on :D

Can't connect to the EA servers :(
Probably a bit of overload!

08-07-2009, 12:48
And anyone can feel free to make a game thread, if you can make it pretty-ish like this one all the better, but I'm usually too lazy to do it, only special games get the treatment (Mirror's Edge and Battlefield) :p.

Tis only a tenner, seems an ideal title for me to try and learn to play FPSes on consoles. If I can't get used to it in 3 months I never will, so I'll just buy the PC one when it comes out. Win-win.
Just a shame I'm on PS3 and can't play with you lot! If anyone wants to buy me an xbox and convince the wife to let me put it under the TV with the rest of em, feel free.

I've got a 360. It's a launch day model and it's sat in it's box in the server cupboard, along with many other consoles that have been relegated to history.

They are according to their Twitter. They're adding more and more servers.

Yeah I've been following that too, no problem I'll just play Prototype, Wolverine, GoW2, CoD4, L4D, BF:Bad Company, PGR4 or one of the many PS3 games I'm yet to finish :D
Keep saying it but I could use a few weeks off work to get through this lot!

Still can't even get online :(
I managed to get online at about 9:30pm last night and had a couple of games, not sure if I'll buy it.
NokkonWud
09-07-2009, 12:23
I have about 5 hours of game play time. Bar a period of time around 9-10pm I haven't had a problem getting on. As long as you have an Open NAT there shouldn't be any issues.
I think it's absolutely fantastic. Best arcade game evah!
Streeteh
09-07-2009, 13:12
Xbox tells me my nat is fine i think (read that in the NXE when you test your connection no error messages will appear if the NAT is open). I've configured it to use OpenDNS too which solved many of my issues on the PS3 too so i'm pretty much stumped.
It's either the servers are overloaded (which i'm inclined to believe as many seem to be having the same problem) or i need a new router :(
I think it's absolutely fantastic. Best arcade game evah!
So it's miles better than BFBC then?
NokkonWud
09-07-2009, 19:34
I loved Bad Company, that rocked too.
BC was for gays who couldn't aim in proper FPS games :p
NokkonWud
10-07-2009, 11:18
Actually, you did need aim because you had to be really accurate using a sniper rifle, not spamming like Halo 3!
So ner.
Nah, the forced inaccuracies meant no one could aim well, and spray and prey worked awesomely :D
Going to play the trial in a bit.
Streeteh
10-07-2009, 18:05
STILL can't get online on the 360, so strange as when i check my connection with the 360 it kicks up no errors which apparently means the NAT is open.
Had a quick bash on the PS3 however and it's pretty good.
Oh and nokkon you seem to be going senile in your old age, Halo 2 had the autofire sniper, Halo 3 has a rather slow one.
Just played this online and the accuracy is miles better then the BC crap, so I might consider buying it when it's not a stupid amount of points (definitely not worth 1200).

Had a play on the PS3 version. Was pleasantly surprised - perfectly playable for me on the pad, the only problem being that I can't remember the controls for toffee. Still that's my problem not the game's. Will probably be making the purchase - be good to be playing BF again.
Controls are weird actually. Y for melee is a bizarre one, and is RB for change weapon.
Streeteh
10-07-2009, 18:48
Any button is a weird one for melee, everyone knows it should be press one of the joysticks!

10-07-2009, 19:01
According to EA the game has sold more on Xbox360 than was expected and they're putting up more and more servers all the time, the problem is, they're always full.
This is what happens with dedicated servers :(. Just keep trying and you'll get in Streeteh. They're working on improving 'group joins', which so far has been a nightmare because finding 1 slot is hard enough, finding 2 or more is nigh on impossible.

Played the PS3 version for a good few hours today. Not normally into these sorts of games, but I've paid £10 for a lot worse.
Agree with the odd control method, but I like the low number of maps, as it means quick download times, and they can always add more.
Definitely worth a look.
Every game should just use the CoD4 control's, it would make life so much easier, they are perfect control's in my opinion.

Yeah, I always found the LT(L2) to accelerate and LB(L1) to brake/reverse a little... crazy. It makes zero sense, I was hoping they'd change it. I also dislike not being able to go prone. But those are about the only two things I could really complain about.
I hope they add more maps. I'm really looking forward to playing the 4th match when it gets released in a couple of weeks (the expected date for the 43,000,000th kill).

Best moment for me so far - managed to take out an enemy in a bunker on Mt. Suribachi with a rifle from the Lighthouse!
Awesome! ;D

Yep, can't fault them at all. Shame about the huge auto aim though in CoD4.

That's not that easy at all, well done.
I managed to take out the driver of a jeep driving past with a sniper rifle, was definitely chuffed with that one. Or where I managed to go a whole round without being killed because I hid well in the bushes and just sniped the enemies from across the map. :p
Well I played the demo for an hour or so and I think it's OK. Not something that I would gush about. Nice eye candy and good use of the game engine. I think the used the wrong map for the demo/trial. A lot of the servers have been 5 v 5 or 5 v 6 and it just ends up a sniper fest on huge map that you don't always feel engaged in the action and it fast becomes a stalemate.
Blow the bridges
Swim across from one side to the other
Snipe the swimmers
Snipe the aeroplanes.
It certainly has potential and I think this will be one to get once I swap out the HDD on my PS3
Invite me to your game next time ladies :)
GET A 360 BRIG! it will look so good in your new house... ;)
O/T - dont know if I fancy BF on a console... though I do love the game, I get too frustrated with trying to get into servers only to find it full of people who go solo too much. Need a good group of mates on all the time.

Looks like DiCE have gotten all the dedicated servers they needed. Don't have a problem getting into games now :).
I've bought it \o/
pretty good fun, although needed a break so shut down and fired up Gun Nation on sky.

Will do. Add me to your friends list numb nuts.
Played the demo last night and loved it, was confusing at first on wake island as I'm used to BF2 on that map and was looking for the helicopters :( Just about got the hang of planes now though :D
Not sure whether to buy it or wait as I won't be able to play it for about a week or so thanks to moving and waiting for O2 to get their act together.
You may as well wait if you can't play it online.
Had a good go of the demo, pretty much enjoyed it, real Battlefield feel to it. Gotta have a good squad though, and I'm not sure it justifies it's price tag.
Still, reasonably tempted though.
Price tag? It's a tenner!
NokkonWud
16-07-2009, 20:02
It's definitely worth £10.
As I said before, Battlefield 2 was great and even though it had plenty of maps you were always playing Karkand. This has 2 very good maps (Guadal Canal and Wake Island) and 1 good one (Iwo-Jima).
There's better value on XBLA though imo, in terms of gaming hours anyway. Graphically it's right up there though for sure.
[edit]Though to be fair, I haven't seen all the maps, so the hours might rise if they're good.
NokkonWud
16-07-2009, 20:22
I don't think there is better value, as someone said yesterday in an article, when was the last time your friends list was so dominated by people playing an Arcade game. In terms of online dynamics it's the best Arcade title released so far, it even beat all projections for the time to get 43m kills, doing it in less than half the time of their most positive guess.
I'd have paid £20 for BF1943 and still been ok with it, it's great! They have taken the best from 1942 and retouched it, for £10 you can't go wrong imo.

I've gone 360 as I have more friends there, however I've heard the PS3 version runs a little better (less glitchy)
Have you tried the demo's of both?

Still haven't actually managed to get the 360 one online (but i haven't tried in a week so i imagine issues have passed), but i have the PS3. It's great but as with all online shooters i've played in the past couple of years other than Killzone 2, there's no teamwork :(.

Nah unfortunately unless you play with friends, there is no teamwork, it's a shame but that's always been the way on public servers.
360 problems are now gone btw mate
It's still not perfect, my experience actually got worse after I bought it! (yes, I bought it :p - fits my drop in and out game mood atm).
I got DC'd mid-session twice last night, and both times I had to drop to dash to get back into a game. Also, it lost a lot of my stats, which really ****ed me off.
Worth a tenner, not bad value, but there is better (Puzzle Quest...).

I would go for Xbox360, the kill numbers go a long way to showing it being much more active than the PS3 version. Xbox360 hit its 43,000,000th kill within a week, PS3 is yet to hit that number.
