windows 7 pre-order starts at midnight. Limited amount of copies for bagain prices.

expected to be £50 for Home premium and £99 for professional.

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx

quidco also has 15% of Microsoft store.

Going to see if any of them are selling it cheap.

Is it definitely midnight it all kicks off?

Good good, shall try and grab mine then.

Does anyone know Amazon/Play/eBuyer's respective policies on charging for pre orders?

Glaucus

Amazon is definitely charge on dispatch. Already looked on there help page.

Not sure on the others.

divine

Awesome, will most likely just buy whichever is cheapest unless they're all the same.

CBA with setting up quidco and an account at MS for it all though.

Amazon and Play are both definitely charge on dispatch.

14-07-2009, 23:34
Cheers for the reminder but i'm still worried about the fact the MS website states you need a legit copy of XP/Vista to qualify. Myself and my parents own OEM copies, there's no real details on whether they count, and i'd ideally like to buy a third copy for a friend who doesn't own any copies.

Glaucus
14-07-2009, 23:36
oem should be fine, oem is a legit copy of windows. But of course it will still be tied to that motherboard.

I have one legit copy of vista retail and two other computers running windows rc. Going to risk it and get 2 copies.

I can't see you typing in serial at purchase and I can't see them making a special disk for these pre orders.

Can always buy some dirt cheap copies on ebay. I mean you can pick up vista for £40 on ebay already for a retail copy. Even if you have to do that it' still far cheaper.

NokkonWud
14-07-2009, 23:38
They do tie it to Motherboards, but I've also replaced a full PC before, re-installed the same OEM and rang to explain it and they've passed it.

I don't have any valid keys for XP/Vista, if it turns out I absolutely can't use the pre orders, i'll sell them or something. None of the retailer sites as yet have any mention of this though, which is another reason i'm avoiding the MS store.

Mark
14-07-2009, 23:47
Keep getting 'server too busy' errors. I'm not convinced the offer is limited by quantity so I'm not sure what the rush is.

I've got an MS Store account so may as well quidco it. Given that I need three licenses - at least one pro (probably two), it'll be worth it.

Glaucus
14-07-2009, 23:49
I don't think there's a huge rush. But apparently japan sold out within a few days. But no idea if it's true. I'm up anyway, so safer to get it now then spend almost £100+ per copy later on,

eBuyer are up - £44.99 for HP, £80 for Pro.

Mark
15-07-2009, 00:06
Nice. There were rumours that Pro would be about £80. Makes the decision easier, though I've changed my mind and would prefer a confirmed 'payment on ship' supplier (I'll still take Quidco if there's the option).

I just ordered from eBuyer.

It comes up with a lot of warning about stock but the email they sent says:

Unfortunately the above item is currently out of stock.

Please note; the product is out of stock at the time of this email. If your order status is showing that payment has been taken it means this matter has been sorted. In this instance, you will receive your order as planned and you can ignore this message. If you have pre-ordered the item, please ignore this message.

First bold implies payment taken on dispatch, second bold just telling you all the 'out of stock' warnings are due to preorder, not actual stock issues as such.

To be honest, I can't see it being much less than £45 anywhere and if Amazon were £10 more for Pro, I can't see them being less for HP.

Frankly, from the looks of things, i'm not sure Amazon and Play got any HP stock. That or they're holding it til morning to give other people who aren't sad like us a chance :p

Mark
15-07-2009, 00:34
Too slow on HP due to dithering, but I grabbed two copies of Pro (one for the laptop and one for the new PC when I get around to buying/building it - won't be before the release date).

Reading on eBuyer forums suggests they'll be Retail discs with no upgrade checks whatsoever, which I'd also heard from elsewhere. Microsoft won't be offering upgrade discs in the EU for a while due to the 'Windows E' policy (i.e. no IE) to avoid another bunch of EU bureaucrats sticking their oar in where it doesn't belong.

It's a copy/paste job from the US site where upgrades do exist. No it isn't, because that page has expired. :) That's why I had to use Google Cache to grab it. You most likely read it on the UK site which, like I said, is a copy/paste from the US site where the products are different (they don't have the 'E' restrictions). We'll find out on release day, but as you said, you can flog it (or 'borrow' someone else's legit CD/key).

Nah, there will be more. 150 won't be the entire stock at eBuyer. They're probably doing a controlled release so everyone gets a chance. There will also be copies to pre-order in retail stores apparently.

Not surprised the pre-order thread went. Everyone seemed to be trading pricing and/or email addresses for hints - both of which are clear violations of the rules.

They could prune it, but it'd have to be locked thereafter as that problem is going to be unavoidable.

I really would expect that retailers (or maybe MS themselves) are going to release this in drips.

If they can 'sell out' on opening night, it creates an atmosphere of massive demand, which will then drive sales of future copies they release before August 9th.

It wouldn't be an almost month long promo with about 5000 copies of both combined to buy.

Mark
15-07-2009, 01:23
I'd stepped away while I did it dawned on me that that was likely the case. They have to take payment on Google and PayPal Checkout orders now because there's no way for them to do so later (they don't have access to the payment details).

My order is at status 'stock warning' and they haven't taken payment. They can't have done as they wouldn't be offering me options to change payment details or cancel the order if they had.

I could have got all these licenses via MSDN, but as I've said before I only use my MSDN license to (a) get stuff that is free anyway (like the RC), or (b) get stuff that I need to do my job - whether that's at home or at work, or (c) as a temporary measure either because I can't find my own copies or for evaluation purposes.

Seems silly to spurn these cheap prices and risk getting burned later. :)

TBH, the panic last night over eBuyer's rapidly diminishing stock levels was quite funny. Loads of people thinking each retailer only had 100 or so copies and if they didn't get one, that'd be it.

As if that's all each retailer would have, after all the hype surrounding this pre-order offer :) My guess is that eBuyer, not knowing how many they'd really be able to sell, just stuck a small nominal amount of stock in there to start with. I notice none of the other retailers are even mentioning stock levels.

Professional basically adds these features:

Location-aware printing
Domain join
Encrypting file system
Advanced backup
Remote desktop host
XP compatibility mode (the virtual machine thingy)

In a change to the Vista HP/Business structure, W7 Pro is a genuine superset of HP and thus still includes all the "home" features like Media Center.

I've ordered a Pro for myself (and two HPs for other machines), partly because of the above features but also because I've had issues with certain bits of MS software not working on Vista HP and requiring Business or Ultimate. Examples are Virtual PC and the Hyper-V manager. Tools such as these may or may not work on W7 HP but I figured I'd just get Pro this time round to make sure. Vista Business wasn't an option as I need things like Media Center and Ultimate was too expensive.

Yep that's what the chart I saw said. Encrypting File System is in Pro but Bitlocker is in Ultimate. Not sure what the exact differences are mind.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Bitlocker would be available in lesser versions than Ultimate and that Bitlocker-to-go (i.e. USB flash drive support) would be in Ultimate. Looks like that's not the case after all.

Pulled from Amazon's page about it.

3. Is this a full product or an upgrade from a previous version of Windows?

At present in the EU, all versions of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate) are the full product. This means that to install Windows 7, you do not need any previous version of Windows installed on your computer.

divine

They are full retail euro copies. The only thing MS say is to be 'eligible for the offer' you need XP or Vista but I think we've generally concluded that's just lazy copy pasting from the US offer pages where they only got the Upgrade packages.

Analysts IDC predict that some 177 million copies of the operating system will be in place by the end of 2010, 50 million of which will be in Europe. The firm estimates that products and services surrounding Windows 7 will generate $320bn (£195bn).

Excellent, I'm still going to put aside an entire weekend as I predict a few problems with drivers and the like. And for some reason (possibly that Samsung apparently doesn't like them) my RAID is the most irritating thing to setup, works a treat once it's lasted a few hours but tends to take about 3 windows installs normally. And about 3 low level formats last time to get it lasting more than a week.

I have a USB thing and a couple of portable drives so will try to find major things before I wipe everything. Still it's sods law I'll forget but the housemate does have an ancient machine held together by my spare parts and wireless dongle so should be fine :)

Just that it's full retail and because it's in Europe, you can't do an upgrade, it needs to be a full format install.

Both Amazon & Play have used up their allocation and also been removed from the list of resellers on Microsoft's site. Ebuyer are still on there and listing the products at the pre-order price but won't let you actually order it. Looks like it won't be long before supplies dry up completely.

Rightly or wrongly, I'd imagine MS are going to get some stick for this. They did say "while stocks last" but, given that the pre-order window was widely advertised as over three weeks, to run out in days doesn't look very good.

I've actually ordered an extra copy of Pro from Currys today as I'm not sure whether I'm going to want Pro or HP on one particular machine. Whichever I end up not using when the time comes will be sold - possibly at a small profit but that's not my motivation in ordering it.

Looks like quite a few people have been ordering as many as they can from multiple retailers with the express intention of selling them at a profit upon release. That's going to add to the frustration of those who miss out on this offer.

Zirax

It lets me log in, so my password is accepted there but as soon as I try and do anything regarding my orders and/or my account it asks for the password again. That's fine, but it won't accept it even though I know that it's 100% correct. I just used it to log in, ffs!

I can only assume that whatever they're using isn't intelligent enough to accept a 20 character password with letters, numbers and symbols at that point in the procedure.

Just a quick note of something I spotted for anyone thinking of buying the upgrade version, such as the £30 Student offer:

http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/pages/moving-to-windows-7-faq.aspx

Upgrade versions require Windows XP or Windows Vista to be running on your computer before installing Windows 7. Full versions of Windows 7 don't require a previous version of Windows to be running on your computer. Both upgrade and full versions contain the same features. If you want to format your hard drive when installing Windows 7, you will need the full version. In general, choose the full version of Windows 7 if you don't have a previous version of Windows on your PC. Choose the upgrade version if you have Windows XP or Windows Vista on your PC.

Not a huge in itself, this however would bother me:

Question: What if I need to reinstall Windows 7 and only have an upgrade version?

If for some reason you need to reinstall Windows 7 and have the upgrade version you will be required to install a previous version of Windows before installing Windows 7.

So if you have an upgrade copy and wish to do a reinstall, you'll need to install XP/Vista again first...

*hugs full retail version*

You can do a clean install with an upgrade and completely remove the previous install (such as if you need to go from 32 to 64 bit, it won't do an upgrade, it will do a clean install) BUT it will only do so from within a prior Windows supposedly, it can't be booted from.

I'm not 100% sure and i've no idea what was said about Vista as I never paid attention to that but from what it says on the blog, it sounds like the upgrade versions could be pretty crippled to me.

Well there's a result.

PC World just called me to say my card had been rejected. Of course it was rejected, it's a pre-payment Mastercard and I get paid tomorrow so there would have been enough on it at the time you're supposed to take the money (ie despatch time) rather than a week in advance!

So I was able to cancel the pre-order that way. I also told them that the website is a bit broken.

My copy of Pro from Currys turned up yesterday morning but haven't done anything with it yet. Three more copies coming from Amazon but god knows when they'll arrive.

So is this emergency partition only 100mb? Does this increase/decrease according to system use etc?

Mark
20-10-2009, 21:24
100mb and that's it. It's just enough to boot the Windows 7 recovery features. By not having it, I just assume there's less that it is possible to recover from. I've had Vista recover from failed updates and who knows what else without a recovery partition, so I doubt it's a big deal.

I won't be jumping through no new hoops - I'll just use a Linux LiveCD to prepare the partitions. I've been doing that for the last few years so it won't be anything new. :)

SiD the Turtle

So far so good. I haven't had a chance to really spend time with it yet, but it's going to take a little bit of time to get used to it as it does do things a little differently, it scored 6.2 on the performance thingy so that's not bad, but it was the hard drive that pulled everything down although it's a fast HDD... ah well.

It looks pretty and seems pretty good - but it does need a bit of familiarisation and tweaking. I'll do that over the weekend.

eBuyer just emailed to confirm it was being shipped and will arrive on Wed 22nd July 2009. Excellent work there, so fast they're actually delivering it to me in the past.

I take it no one has had theirs arrive from Play yet? Mine were shipped on Monday.
I hate Play and only use them when there are no other alternatives (and that night eBuyer was timing out for me left, right and center :().

Still no word on mine but I'm a cheapskate and selected super saver delivery as I don't really care when it arrives, as long as it does. :)

Delivered this morning at 9am by ****tylink :)

Good job Mrs Dym was at home to receive delivery!

Hmmm, mine is currently in a depot.

However, the Windows 7 advisdar says I need to install a 32-bit version of windows 7 and reinstall my programs, also says my 512gb graphics card can't hack Aero, my on-board sound may not work, and neither will citrix, zonealarm (no bad thing) and Nero. Apparently I need 3gb or RAM to run the XP mode too. DDR3200 :s

What's in your system?

2.2ghz X2 (or the one before), 2gb ram, geforce 7600GS I think.

Just got this:

"22/10/2009 10:33:00 CUSTOMER The parcel has been delivered The parcel has been left in a secure location at the front of the property"
Sounds slightly more promising than having drop kicked it over to the back garden, (asked housemate to leave porch ajar), have to wait and see :s

divine
22-10-2009, 13:19
Well, given you only have 2GB RAM, then using 64 or 32 bit is largely moot. If you went with 64 it gives room to drop in another 2GB easily but 2GB of PC3200 DDR isn't going to be easy to come by or cheap any more.

7600GS isn't the strongest of cards but considering a netbook can manage, i'd be surprised if that couldn't.

Onboard sound will be motherboard dependant, my Parents PC with A64 nForce 4 is fine though.

Well I have a 64bit chip :s Think I got the last lot off of ebay, problem is now it's this rare price goes up like the old pci gfx cards. I guess i'll give it a try and see what happens - probably post sorting the holiday though.

Don't you all wish these companies would advise on the courier a little earlier?! I'd have used my work address if I knew it wasn't going to be RM.

Mark
22-10-2009, 14:14
As I've said before, I'll probably not be installing for a while (bought for cheapness, not urgency), but when I do, I'll have a bit of a dilemma.

On my laptop, I've got 4GB, and a 64-bit capable processor, so 32-bit or 64-bit? Not as easy as you'd think.

32-bit works with everything I want it to work with, but only gives me access to 3.2GB RAM.

64-bit might have some compatibility issues with the old (circa 1997) developer tools I sometimes need to use, and 64-bit apps are almost always bigger than 32-bit (for obvious reasons), so will that 0.8GB extra actually be worth having?

The difference with Vista wasn't clear-cut, and someone I know tried both and preferred 32-bit, on the same hardware I've got.

divine
22-10-2009, 15:17
Well I have a 64bit chip :s

Which enables 64 bit to work, however you'll barely see any benefit to doing so.

You'll be able to maybe execute 64 bit instructions in applications that account for it and so on but if you weren't told something was quicker due to 64 bit, you probably wouldn't notice it yourself.

The biggest reason for most people to go 64 is to avoid the 32bit RAM cap that prevents Windows accessing more than typically around 3.25GB of RAM.

22-10-2009, 15:26
The 100MB partition has always been there in W7. It's just that most of the time it's hidden. On one system it is hidden on anotehr system it's not. No idea why. But just leave it, it's so small.

64bit has many benefits, however pretty much all are under the hood and you wont notice.
32bit can only see 4GB of ram. This includes any gfx card ram, mobo ram, and any memory on anything else.
everyone should be going 64bit unless they have a good reason not to. Gfx card drivers should not be a problem unless it's very very old.

The good news... I had a home delivery network parcel. Was put in porch out of sight AND they then closed and locked the porch door!

However it contains a seperate amazon order worth about £36. Windows 7 is where? The other order was just meant to be shipped via RM with no tracking number.

It does SAY RM 2nd class on the box, but where is my £90 purchase amazon?

Just got my citylink parcel, was indeed Tesco, so now have one pro and one home. I know the driver from years back and he was asking what it was as he'd had loads to deliver today so I opened it there and we had a nose :)

Got home from work and UPS had tried to deliver. Going to pick that one up tomoz.

I too have a dilemma. My Dell PC (main one) is getting on a bit, but looks like the only issue will be can't run Aero (whatever that is).

My HCPC is a much never setup and probably will run everything (not tried the tester thing on it yet).

I'd swap the innards over in the cases apart from I seriouly doubt the dell innards are ATX compatible...

Hmm.

Mark
22-10-2009, 19:06
Aero is the fancy graphics. Win7 works fine without but I'll admit it doesn't look anywhere near as pretty. I use Aero stuff more than I realise. Needs a graphics card upgrade to fix that.

Parents PC has the same problem - and it's a Dell with no graphics upgrade option so going to have to break that one to them. They're on XP currently though so no big deal.

Almost 31 minutes on the phone to amazon and I have a new order for Windows 7. They apparently don't want the DVD I got back either. Be interesting to see what arrives next Wednesday.

Bloke at work said he has Win7 Beta running on a £250 dell server, on-board graphics and all and it works fine. Think it's got about 1-2gb of ram and a 'reasonable' processor. He just uses it for downloads and backups though.

Affects task switching and various other effects too. Nothing major. Just annoying when you're used to seeing 'live' views with Alt+Tab and they don't work. Oh, and Windows+Tab is pure Aero and doesn't work at all without.

divine
22-10-2009, 19:21
I wasn't sure if the switching stuff and window shaking etc. got turned off or not as I figured they weren't as graphically intensive, despite all being grouped under the aero banner.

Bad drivers. Ignore it and install new drivers afterwards. It'll be fine. Windows 7 upgrade doesn't like the ATI drivers IIRC.

Not sure about the 760GT. That might work too.

I've just run the upgrade checker thing and it says my graphics adapter doesn't support Aero, which seems odd considering it's a 256MB 8800 GTS, which I would have thought would be more than capable :/

Nutcase

As Mark said, it looks like the checker is a bit poo. On Windows 7 now  and it looks like it works on mine out the box :)

Did a quick WIE on the fresh install:

Processor: 6.1
RAM 6.1
Aero Graphics 6.8
Gaming Graphics 6.8
HDD 5.2 (not a suprise, the drive I'm trying is ancient!)

Basic spec is Dual core 2.6 with 4gb 1600 DDR3 and a Radeon HD4670 512mb GDDR3.

edit: after installing all available updates, no change to the score.

Mark
23-10-2009, 22:14
Ignore the upgrade checker graphics stuff. Unless your card is ancient (i.e. older than 2005), it'll almost certainly work.

Aero Graphics 6.8
Gaming Graphics 6.8
Radeon HD4670 512mb GDDR3

Either they changed the grading in the final release or something funny is going on as my GTX260 only gets 6.3 but is a far superior gaming card to a 4670, more on par with the 4870.

Love it just downloaded my student copy, its some silly exe file obviously, but its easy enough to make it an iso, and or put it on a flash drive. More importantly its just as easy to use an upgrade disc to install fresh as a retail disc. £30 = Bargain!

It seems the student copies are actually retail ones anyway after all.

I know of a couple of people who have used an upgrade version and done a format/install and then had it refuse to activate saying they only have an upgrade serial.
