I thought this would complement DLs thread nicely. As the title suggests: waht films do YOU like that aren't well-known or popular or whatever and a couple of lines to say why.

One of my all time favourites is Koyaanisqatsi.
It's a Hopi Indian word meaning 'life out of balance' and is all time-lapse and high-speed videography of mainly landscapes, set to a Philip Glass score.
No message, no hidden meanings, just something to kick back and chill out to.

let's hear yours
:)

K-Pax, one of my favourite films with possibly the second best score. Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges star in it, but few people in real life have heard of it.

Love and own both the films just mentioned :p.

I love Eurotrip, but a lot of people hate it. It always makes me laugh. If we're going for more obscure, I really enjoyed Naked Weapon and although many people have heard of it, I know loads haven't seen it, Amelie.

Vulgar - A Clown gets gang raped and he goes out for revenge. Not a family friendly film. Very strange and very dark.

Drawing Flies - The 'missing' View Askewniverse film. Group of housemates are about to get evicted, one invites others to his fathers cabin. Only there's no cabin and he's searching for bigfoot. Funny and weird. :D Plus - Jason Lee rocks! :D

Up until last night I hadn't heard of Revenge of the nerds
was made in '84 and there are about 4 of them. Watched the first last night and it was quite good. Maybe it's because I'm at uni and play American Football and that's similar to the setting of the first film.
Going to watch the second film later tonight after a few beers

I've got all three of the trilogy on DVD, (Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi being the other 2).

They're awesome.

For just being a generally funny film (and the second or third best pool film of all time*) I'd recommend Poolhall Junkies, it's entertaining and does feature Christopher Walken who is almost always good value for money.

If going for a bit more culture then Rififi is a class act, there's even a period where no character speaks for over 20 minutes and yet there is more conveyed in that time that most films manage in the entirety of their running time.

*it's not that big a boast, I can think of five pool films off the top of my head and I own them all. ;D

Another strange one from me - from my Uni days actually.

Preaching to the Perverted.

I'll just use synopsis from IMDB. Minister on a moral crusade employs young computer whizzkid Peter to infiltrate the London S&M scene. Peter has to gather evidence of physical "assaults" in order for the Minister to prosecute and shut the scene down. But Peter gets unwittingly drawn into it and falls for the Mistress Tanya Cheex.

Strange, funny and well..stranger... What a great name for the lead character though. ;)

Synecdoche, New York.
Really weird film that I still don't quite fully 'get' but I do know I liked it :) Bit challenging to watch but that's what made it a pleasant change. Philip Seymour Hoffman was particularly great in it, but then again he always is.

Boondock Saints. Bought this on a whim years ago and it's a bloody brilliant film. Two Irish brothers get caught up in the middle of some bother and manage to wrangle their way through the mess. Brilliant appearance from the dad who is played by someone who I'll keep nameless as you'll not really be expecting it.

Just a great film.

Great film, and the idea came from a set of trading cards. :)
One of the cards was banned in the states I believe as it showed a herd of cows on fire, a scene they got into the movie within the first 3 mins or so :)

I dunno I have seen loads of the films in this thread... maybe I just watch too many films :o though there are one or two suggested here I definitely don't want to see

Anyhow, I'm never sure what films aren't very well known so I will just go with ones I loved but not many people I know have seen:

Tengoku to Jigoku (High and Low)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Zatôichi
Shogun (ok not a film it's a mini series, but hey :p)

Shogun (ok not a film it's a mini series, but hey :p)

I thought everybody had seen this :)
Or am I just too old and remember it from first showing on TV :o

EDIT: My film would probably be Yojimbo. I only know a couple of people that have seen it. Although I suspect a few on here have.
It's another Kurosawa movie that "inspired" a western. :) (bonus points if you know which one without using IMDB :))

I thought the same, it wasn't until I was watching it in hospital recently nobody seemed to have heard of it. Then I realised it was probably an age thing that they didn't remember it from the first time round :o So all of us oldies have probably heard of it.... maybe it's just nurses and doctors who haven't seen it ;D

Shogun is very very good, right up there on a par with Roots, everyone should have seen both of them!

A film that I love which nobody seems to have heard of is Summer School. It's an oldish film from 1987. Here are the two plot summaries from IMDB:

"A high-school gym teacher has big plans for the summer, but is forced to cancel them to teach a "bonehead" English class for misfit goof-off students. Fortunately, his unconventional brand of teaching fun field trips begins to connect with them, and even inspires ardor in some."

"When the teacher who is suppose to teach the Summer remedial class, decides not to do it. The Vice-Principal, who is responsible for Summer School, ropes Freddy Shoop into teaching it, and he is not an academic teacher. And all of the students are not exactly willing to meet him half way."

It sounds terrible but it's not. It really is hilarious, a superb movie and I laugh like a drain whenever I see it, I can't recommend it highly enough!

Damnit, I know Seven Samurai became the Magnificent Seven which then became Battle Beyond the Stars.

I think its A Fistful of Dollars (but it might be Once Upon a Time in the West)

There's loads of Hong Kong films that I like and few people have seen:
Mr Vampire
Tokyo Raiders
2002
Stormriders
Project A

I also like to pimp The Dish to anyone who will listen.

Silly silly film!

It is. :)
I think it's because when I was growing up I spent a lot of school holidays at my grandmas and she had piles of VHS cassettes with silent comedies on them which I watched over and over. Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy.
Hong Kong cinema has the same tendancy to simplify and overplay the emotions on screen and there's obviously a similarity in the physical performances.

Stormriders - seen 2 different version the subtitled one being much better
Project A - Jackie Chan movie of course I've seen it

Some of the comedy films play better with ridiculous dubbing tracks on, but generally it's too distracting having the lips moving out of sync.
Project A is one of Jackie's best I reckon and a good example of where Hong Kong cinema can be quite similar to the old silent comedies.

Taxi and Les Visiteurs are both films which I highly rate :)

Most people have heard of them though as they were both remade by Hollywood, the former with Queen Latifah, the latter with the original cast (:s). The original french versions are far superior though :)

In fact, I think Brotherhood of the Wolf could be added to that list... Another French film! Albeit a werewolf one :D

And going with werewolf films, the Ginger Snaps trilogy is an excellent series of films following the escapades of two teenage girls and their adventures into lycanthropy :D

One might not believe it, but one of my favourite films that always raises a "EH!?!" amongst a group of people is Withnail & I.

One of my top ten favourite films that. Love it.

Kung-Fu Panda

Perfect family film. Great story, great characters with beautifully captured personalities, and loads of brilliant high-speed action bits full of comedy as well as violence! This would have made a great regular martial arts movie if they'd removed some of the more slapstick elements, the story is that good.

Only loses marks for over-labouring the point that the panda is fat and clumsy. We get it. I don't need to see him catching his breath yet again or running into another wall.

The Godfather - The Epic - 1901-1959

Take Godfather and Godfather Part II - edit to chronological order, add previously unseen footage and create perfection in Godfather form.

I've just spent over 6 hours watching it.

Sadly, only available on VHS... and was originally done for TV so is only in 4:3 - but I really didn't care about that. It's called The Epic, and it's right. Two of the finest movies ever made, made into the finest movie ever made. :D

My video editing skills may be getting a workout soon. VHS -> PC - closely followed by DVD/Bluray -> PC - then a step by step recreation using the best footage I can using the VHS video as a guide track.

I have the space, the computing power and the time to do it... I've got nothing else to do at the moment.

Track down a copy and watch it. It's superb!

Not sure how well known it is, but I hadn't heard of it before I saw it Inside I'm Dancing (also known as "Rory O'Shea Was Here" in the US).

Michael Connolly is a twenty-four year-old who has cerebral palsy, and a long-term resident of the Carrigmore Residential Home for the Disabled, run by the formidable Eileen. His life is transformed when the maverick Rory O'Shea, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, moves in. Michael is stunned to discover that fast talking Rory, who can move only his right hand, can understand his almost unintelligible speech. Rory's dynamic and rebellious nature soon sparks a flame in Michael, introducing him to a whole new world outside of Carrigmore.

Just reading through all the Hong Kong flicks made me remember "Encounters of the Spooky Kind" starring Samo Hung. Chinese vampires are somewhat different to western conceptions of them, and the fight scene in the restaurant with the stool is awesome!

"The Victim" is another Samo Hung film that I really rate too. Very much of a "whodunnit" type plot with Samo's inimitable fighting styles shown off to great effect - I'm sure the ladies will like the fight in the bathhouse ;)
