If you get your ear pierced, can you pick the jewellery, or do you have to start off with a stud?

ta :)

Ooooh, I am going back 20 years here since I had mine done.

I think you have to have a stud in for about 6 weeks before anything else.

I still wear an earring from time to time.

Can you at least pick a style, or does it just have to be a ball?

Its usually a ball or one with a crystal in it, not seen any other styles but maybe at a tattoo/piercing place might have something different.

The reason they use a stud for first 6-8 weeks is that it will heal quicker than with a ring in it.
Depending on the piercer you should be able to have different jewellery straight away but it will take alot longer to heal.

I had a ring in the top of my ear when they did it

I don't want a ring, but I just don't want to have a plain stud.

I took my daughter in to get her's done and they had a range of studs, not all of which were plan.

In Claire's Accessories you can have any type of stud you like (well you could when I worked there) plain gold, blue crystal, white crystal, red crystal, silver... etc you just have to pay more for different colours.

Used to be £8 (£4 for plain gold studs and £4 for the piercing) and you got a bottle of cleaner for free (to bathe your ears - make sure you bathe and turn every day)

One bloke had a cartilage piercing (top of ear) and asked if we could remove it as it was causing him jip. He hadn't bathed and turned and the skin had grown over the stud. A&E for you matey!

A lot of piercers recommend you don't turn jewellery now

WHen I had my nose done I was told to leave it the hell alone and not turn it. He was scarey, I believed him :D

What happened to your nose?

I was told that turning it slows down healing as you keep damaging the new skin that is trying to grow through the hole and also grubby fingers and keep opening the "wound" by turning means more chance of infection.

The advice my girl was given was to give it 1/4 turns and keep it clean. Seemed to work although she didn't leave it in long enough.

Well it was runny a few days ago. Other than that it's fine :D

I took it out to try and put a tiny stud in when I went to see the parentals about 2 months after I had it done. I couldnt get another one back through :( I can still remember how much it REALLY hurt hence why I've not done it again, plus it's not really practical at work.

I got told to turn my eyebrow ring the first time I had it done. When I got it redone recently (with a bar) they said leave it alone.

Who knows? :p

BB xI had my ears pierced when I was about 11 and the skin grew over mine too (not COMPLETELY over), despite me turning them. They got really infected and nasty. I later discovered that I'm allergic to 9ct gold because it contains a reasonable amount of nickel.

You should never turn jewelery in piercings because it's an unnatural movement. I'm afraid my only experience comes from Claire's Accessories (although I was the trainer!). You need to push and pull the stud to get the skin used to moving in that way, but also leave time for the skin to heal too.

In answer to the OP, the ear studs used for piercing are limited in choice as they are made by few companies (they come in sterile packs). But you only need keep it in for a few weeks with a lobe piercing and then you can change it for whatever you like :)

I must admit you struck me as someone who would already have one if not both ears pierced ;) :p

go to a piercing studio.

it's a bit more expensive, but you'll get jewllery that isn't made of rubbish and isn't unhygenic blunt force trauma to your ears.

and then you can get it pierced with just about anything you want.

Thinking scaffolding now :)

I want to get that done at some point :) Need to find a new piercer since Nick closed down :(

Chuckles

They weren't keen on scaffolding soon after getting my eyebrow done as you aren't supposed to have too many healing at the same time. I ended up getting a black PVD bar through my left lobe.

where are you going for these?

Chuckles

Asgard is the Bargate centre, Southampton. Definitely recommend them. Lucy (who does them) is hot as well :D

edit : They are fairly expensive though. 20-30 depending on the metal and area pierced.

I kinda went a bit nuts after starting this thread. It wasn't helped by being introduced to a piercer who's PC kept breaking and would give me a free stab if I fixed it :p

Nice! Was looking at getting a scaffoldy thing but all I can remember from getting my other ear cartilage done is the pain and the length of time it took to heal! I did get it pierced first with a hoop which I realise was kinda silly. Was also a BCR so I couldn't even change it myself!

Got my lip done not that long ago and I'm sure when it heals I'll be looking for something else to get done! It's all so addictive and expensive :(

Chuckles

Yeah my piercer is awesome! They have all healed so well compared even with getting them done at registered places.

I was able to sleep on all the other cartlidges within about 3 days. The scaffold takes longer but she did it with PTFE which is like flexable plastic. After about 6 weeks, you can change it to proper metal and it's fine. It was still the most tricky but it's worth it. I've just changed it with a slightly shorter bar so it fits pefect now. You obviously want a slightly longer one to begin to account for any swelling.

Chuckles

You should be able to change BCRs by the way. I change them all the time. The trick is to do it by feel of the dimples rather than trying to do it an a mirror.

The really fiddly ones are complete segment rings like I've got in my nose. They take ages!

I had my lip pierced about 4 years ago and it healed pretty sharpish with a labret stud in - although I did buy a bioplast retainer for work which I used in the first month or so which in comparison to others I know rapidly sped up the healing process.

I gather it's dependant upon the person and their reaction to the different materials however, having a good piercer makes the largest difference- when I had a tongue piercing the guy was a bit of a plonker and angled incorrectly leading to a small split in my tongue - that took some time to heal :p

They're all gone now due to professional commitments that such appearance would cause grief to, due to being in the mouth they will have almost certainly healed over anyway :)
