View Full Version : Firewall Recommendations
As my PC's now connected directly to my cable modem, I figure it'd probably be sensible to rely on a bit more than nothing/Windows Firewall.
Any recommendations? Needs to be free or at least acquirable free ;) And easy to remove without leaving loads of crap preferably! It's only a temporary fix until my flatmates make up their mind about a router.
Windows firewall will probably do you ok short term. Just be sure to not allow file sharing.
Aye, the Windows firewall blocks everything by default so it should be sufficient.
Windows f/w is ok. Zone alarm's not bad - the free version works pretty well. Can you not get a router? At least then there's a bit more protection and at least it'll be doing NAT for a start.
Well if you are after a cable router, I have one kicking around at home :) Its a Linksys 4 port, but doesn't have any wireless.
I have used Kerio firewall in the past. Not the most user friendly version, but there are a heck of a lot of configuration options within it. I also use zonealarm
I found a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port cable modem router in the server room earlier which I think is my old router from when I was originally using ntl. Gimme a shout if you want it.
A router would be fantastic off one of you :) You can have it back next summer if you want :)
One of my flatmates wants to connect it up to her PC but doesn't know where to start and I'd rather take over so to speak :D
I'll stick with windows firewall for now then, it seems ok, just wans't sure about it as like I said, I'm not used to firewalls these days.
Yeah, Windows Firewall is fine. Just go into Security Centre -> Firewall, turn it on, then go to the Exceptions tab and uncheck everything you don't need (especially file and printer sharing). :)
It seems it wasn't my old router I found - it has a European PSU with German text on it so I must have picked it up on my travels.
You're welcome to it Jen, but you'll need an adapter (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1186&criteria=shaver%20adapter&doy=20m9) for it. If your interested, PM me your address and I'll get it sent off tomorrow.
That would be great thanks :) Adapter's np as I've got a spare one of those anyway :D
Pming you now :)
Kerio version 2.15 (very important its 2.15), does what a firewall does. It's small, easy to use and blocks everything in and out as you pleased. Best of all its free, don't get the newer versions as they come with anti spyware program too with just add to the memory usage. If you use Adaware now and again its fine.
