Felipe Massa's condition has been described as "serious but stable" following emergency surgery after he suffered skull damage and concussion.
Really hope he's recovered and back in a car soon. Freak accident but it goes to show how great the modern helmets are. There is a photo floating around that shows the damage done but as Massa is still in the helmet I won't post it.
Hope he makes a full recovery asap. :(
As the article points out, twice in a few weeks of each other similar things have occurred. Hope he recovers quickly :(

The surgery was a success and he's expected to make a full recovery. The cut itself above his eye looked pretty gruesome, it's on the Gazzetta Dello Sport, the italian newspapers, website.
I hope he makes a full recovery, he seems like a nice guy. Just one of those crazy things :(.

Am keeping fingers crossed he makes a full recovery. I knew it had to be serious watching the replays because he wasnt making any attempt to steer the car away from the crash barrier, he must have already been unconscious :( its a testament as to how safe those crash helmits are. Get well soon Massa.

On another forum I saw a link to a picture of Massa after the accident. If you're of a sensitive disposition then it might seem a bit gruesome so please exercise some common sense. http://bit.ly/VpWkr
In a strange way though this does prove how strong a modern F1 car is. Massa was said to crash into the tyres at about 125mph yet the chassis was structually intact.

Looks bloody horrible the damage it has caused. Really hope he makes a full recovery

Heard on the radio this morning that they have woken him successfully from the general anaesthetic.
Wishing him well. :)
James Allen said on twitter that he's going to be fine, which is a relief. Ferrari have ruled out a schumacher return too :(
Jesus Christ, poor guy :( I said it was bad the second they showed it stuffed into the tyre wall and he wasn't moving. I feel desperately sorry for him. Glad he's come through surgery OK though and am wishing him a very swift recovery.
Hope he comes through this with no lasting damage. Always difficult to judge when the brain is involved. :(
He's lucky that wasn't a touch lower, the visor wouldn't have taken that impact like the main helmet did. Sounds like he should recover fine though from what I've seen but no idea how long it will be until he's back in the seat again.

Watched the accident happen in slow mo yesterday with the spring coming up & the cockpit cam showing it all. Massa can take a punch that's for sure. ;D
I'm only laughing now as it looks like the lad will recover but **** me what a hit.
Seemed a bit of a dodgy weekend to me what with Massa then the flying wheel & then the near miss in the pits, F1 is looking a tad desperate in a dangerous way of late.

Starting to look like he may not return to F1 though.
He's got damage to his left eye.

Poor fella. I was terrified when I saw him just parked in the wall with the engine revving, and then talk of flying suspension, coupled with the fact nothing was being replayed. So sad if he can't return to his sport but glad he isn't in a worse position.

I feel so sorry for his poor family, especially his heavily pregnant wife. That is the last thing you need.
Such a shame if he can't come back to the sport, but at least he isn't in a worse state. I don't see the funny side in this whole situation to be quite honest.

IIRC he mentioned in an interview before qualify that this year he had a 5% doubt about racing compared to 0% last year.
I suspect that even if he recovers fully we won't see him behind the wheel of an F1 car again.

More than likely his vision in his left eye will make it Impossible for him to return. He just won't be able to judge distance any more.
He will be alive & fully mobile though, I think after watching the accident he should count himself lucky to be alive. As somebody else said if that had hit the visor it would have gone into his head/brain & instant death.
No way he'll be back this season. They still have him in an induced coma. They are only waking him up to take brain scans and tests.
They think he will recover fine from the head injuries. Lets just hope that he hasn't done any long term eye injury.
Very lucky. Imagine if that just hit the visor and missed the helmet completely
I read BBC update at lunchtime about him being able to communicate, but not being able to speak and didn't think things looked too great. He is definitely lucky to be alive, and I just hope that he can recover in time to see his first child born. It will be a real shame if he can't return to motorsport :(

Barrichello said that, not Massa
edit - just found the interview
"Ninety-five per cent of my feelings are to keep on. I love it, I have a lot of speed in myself, but five per cent tells me 'Why do you need it?'
"It's something that's on my mind, even though it's only five per cent, but next year is too far away for me to decide anything."

This video explaining the crash shows almost a driver's view of the impact and followin crash into the barriers- pretty horrific when you think about the speed of impact etc.
Fingers crossed he reaches a full recovery in a swift manner :)
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77418 - Oh my, now this I don't want to miss!
It's good to see Massa making such an improvement too. Looks like he will be racing again if he carrys on as he is, it's more a case of when.
Seems Schumacher may well have the replacement gig
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77418
Surprised me really, I wouldn't have thought it was worth the risk to his reputation to compete in an average car.

Argh, Why does he have to come back. As long as he doesn't win all the time and doesn't make the sport boring again then I don't mind.
Think once you are retired though then keep it that way. Give the test drivers a chance to have a go at the racing.
Ferrari's test drivers had their go a fair few years ago already :p
I suspect Bernie Ecclestone might well have had a few words here and there, Schumacher coming back will cause a huge boost to viewing figures I imagine.
I'm glad he has come back. It will get some people watching again and attract more viewers for that race alone than probably any other this season. Hopefully too it will give Kimmi a kick and get some competitiveness back in him. I would have preferred it was Alonso, but Schumi will do. Badoer I can't ever see being offered the chance as a stand in with his track record, a good test driver he may be but not as a racer.

Very surprised but excited too!
It might even manage to make Valencia slightly more exciting than suicidally boring. Like, just self harm boring instead.

I hate the man with a passion, and couldnt stand him when he was racing BUT at the same time I cannot wait to see him competing with todays drivers.
I agree with Tink in that I hope it doesnt become a boring whitewash though.

You say todays drivers as if most of them are different - the only guys up the sharp end that he hasn't competed with before are Hamilton and Vettel really.

Exactly, so what is all the fuss about?
He is just another driver to me, but someone who I grew a large dislike for.
Very glad to hear that Massa is recovering quickly and everything is looking positive for him :)
He's my absolute hero so I'm very pleased that he's going to be racing again. I honestly don't expect anything of him though, and I think it's a mistake getting back into it but I'd like to be proved wrong.

Ok but the cars have changed as well, and even if he has raced against the likes of Alonso/Webber, they werent in the cars they are now, with the experience they now have etc. :)
Oh and because you all did it to me when I vent my feelings about Lewis, stop being mean about Michael please :p

No where near as boring as when Michael Schumacker was racing and winning EVERY race. Now that was boring!
Yeah, when it's not a Brit walking away with all the bigs pots, it's boring.
To be honest I loved it when my hero wiped the floor with everyone.

That isn't my point. Button has been racing for years, and it was fantastic to see him win races when he has worked so hard for it. Same when Mark Webber won the race two races ago, that was awesome to see. It doesn't matter about the nationality of the racer. Every race hasn't been a dead certain that one person was going to win. Which is what I enjoy about a race and is what I hated about Michael Schumacker racing, as even before the qualifying you knew exactly who was going to win. Not interesting racing.
But it is when you're his biggest fan, which was sort of my point.

Fair enough, I don't see racing as interesting just because one person you want to win, wins, I see racing to be interesting when a driver has to push himself to win, or has been through alot in his racing career, or a fight between a few cars. But each to their own :)
Can we not just accept that people like different drivers for their own reasons and be done with it? Jees!
Anyway, I've never been Schumacher's biggest fan but I'm looking forward to seeing him race again, especially in a car he's never driven before. I think he's a fitting (hopefully) temporary replacement for Massa and I honestly do think it's what F1 needs after all the bad press it's been given recently with all the in-fighting etc. Whether he wins or comes last, I think it will be an enjoyable race and it'll certainly score Ferrari some popularity points.

I'd already started writing it before I saw your reply Tink :)
I personally enjoyed watching the Schumacher era. I sort of see where people come from when it comes to him winning back to back etc but I personally enjoy watching anyone come to the front and dominating, it shows up the rest rather than being boring just for being him. People don't stop watching football because of Manchester United, nor will people not watch the sprinting because of Usain Bolt. Or the swimming. etc. Dominance should be relished and not derided, purely for the challenge it presents everybody else competing.
I wonder if people would have said the same about Senna in the end, had he not died?
Unfortunately I do not see what is so "amazing" about Schumacker racing again, or how it will be more interesting.
Like him or loathe him, he is a good driver and he's demonstrated in in numerous forms, not just F1. I really don't like him, but I do respect his abilities behind a wheel.
I'm actually looking forward to him racing. The cars this season are ending up fairly similar(ish) in performance, and Ferrari haven't got the best car in the field, which they pretty much had all the time he was racing. Will be very interesting to see just how he rates against everyone in a less competitive car (and whether with the benefit of his experience the car can be tweaked to be more competitive)

I agree, he is a good driver, but the majority of the driver's in formula 1 are good drivers. :)

For sure. It's great to see Webber having so much better luck this season.
It's interesting more from seeing how people like Hamilton really rate against someone as legendary as Schumacher. I'd love to pit Damon Hill and co at their prime against this seasons drivers too :)

D'oh! Was considerably looking forward to this (tho I was pleased to see Hamilton's grin back at the weekend). Guessing all the people who bought Valencia tickets on the strength of Schuey returning will be somewhat annoyed.
Guess it'll be Marc Gene in the car come next Sat then?

Strangely no. Luca Badoer has been confirmed. The driver who last raced 10 years ago.
I would have gone with Gene - more recent experience. Although I think Badoer has more mileage in the F60
Not sure about Badoer though. Does this mean that he is ruled out for the rest of the season? I know he's still broken from the bikes but hopefully he could be back for one of the last races?

There are a few rumours floating around of Bruno Senna getting a 3 race contract with Ferrari.
It's been 6 months since Schumachers superbike accident and his neck still hasn't healed properly. It may be that as he was not competitively racing he was leaving his neck to heal naturally rather than the odd methods they use to bring current drivers back up to condition *Webber and the -130°C room for instance*
Better to let it heal than risk further injury by not going in 100% fit
Didn't our Nige race a whole season with a badly knackered foot that he could barely stand on and also run a few races with a broken back?

He did his first test for Lotus with a broken back iirc. But the thing to remember is, Mansell is a numpty. How many times has he raced when injured, only to crash and cause further injury?
Also, the forces involved back then were much less. 5g is fairly regular around the tracks. It's close to doubled over the last 20 years.
