View Full Version : Migrating iTunes into Windows 7
Hey,
I've never really liked iTunes when it comes to reinstalls/new OS's. So whats the best way to move an existing iTunes setup from Vista, into Windows 7?
I've installed build 7600 today, and probably going to be using it more and more now that its so close (if not already there) to final build. So could do with setting up iTunes to mirror the vista setup :)

Just copy across the iTunes folder (the one in your 'my documents', not the one from program files) and it should pick everything up fine :)

Don't use iTunes in the first place :p

Don't listen to Alex :p
iTunes rocks.
i've used all sorts in the past and spent a good few years using alternatives with my first few iPods, but now with the iPhone i'll stick with iTunes.
Cheers Dymetrie, i'll set it up and see how i get on. (just need to change a drive letter so it can find everything first!)

Actually the only valid reason to use iTunes is probably having an iPhone, because iPhone support on the other alternative players doesnt always seem to be there. At least with media monkey anyway. Otherwise iTunes doesn't really do anything very well :p
Itunes works well on a mac it sucks on a PC. I only use it to synch my outlook and put songs on (when it works). Hateful program.

Lies!
iTunes+Smart Playlists=iPod superiority :D

I've found that it works very well under windows (vista and 7) and I've had no problem getting it to do what I want. Combined with how well it manages my iPhone then I'm more than happy with it.
The only slight gripe I have is that it can be a little bit slow to react sometimes, but then again so can I :D
I just find it completely non-intuitive, slow and I hate how it has to convert all my mp3s into a format IT wants - that really ****s me off tbh. Winamp for me is the easiest mp3 player out there. I prefer itunes to WMP however.

I think you're doing something wrong, Will - It won't convert files unless you tell it to and even then, it will only convert to the format you specify. It supports mp3 so there's no way it should be trying to convert anything if you're feeding it mp3s.

I should learn to keep stum but the day I uninstalled iTunes ranks up there with the birth of my children.
* I exaggerate of course (I think)

Meh I dunno, I think it's the WMA files it doesn't like. Anyway I have it as a necessary evil - but it's not my media player of choice.
Yeah it'll convert WMAs but not MP3s. But who has WMAs anyway - that'd require the use of an app I won't even utter the name of.
But I agree it can be a little slow on occasion but not often enough to change the fact I like it. It manages my massive array of podcast subscriptions, a few audio books and all my music perfectly :D
Winamp plays wmas fine :)
I think he means that to get a WMA file, it needs to be created with WMP which is something unmentionable :p
Well 8 years ago that's all I had :p
That is not a good enough excuse! :p
iTunes was doing you a favour - making them into a halfway respectable file type :D
It's like anything else apple, you just have to do it their way as it's the best way

in which time you should have acquired something such as Razor Lame and slapped windows media up into MP3 :p ;D

Without getting into my age old argument i love and cherish :p;D MediaMonkey has autoplaylists which work much much better (more options much more control) than smart playlists ever would have (apple wouldnt allow anyone that much control!). My autoplaylists are made up of other autoplaylists then all auto synced to my iPod whenever i connect, which means i can have access to LOADS of songs in the overall massive autoplaylist in one go, or whittle is down depends on a loads of factors (of my own choosing).
Anyway forget it i know i'm flogging a dead horse :D:p

Nowt wrong with flogging dead horses ;)
I do exactly the same as you, smart playlists and then other smart playlists based on other smart playlists on set criterion. The list of things that can be used to make the smart playlist is huge!
I reckon both programs now have similar functionality and each probably have their own plusses and minuses.
Here's a small section of one of my smart playlists, note the scrollbar, if I scroll up and down there are about double the number of rules that you can see controlling the list...

Now I must go to work. Great new job I've got in "Bob's horse flogging factory" ;D ;D :)
I don't create all this playlist crap :p I just select all, press on "random" and just click on next if I don't like the song. Furthermore I have many thousands of songs that are not tagged and I'm definitely not bothered about tagging them all either :p

Must. Not. Mention. Picard. ;D
Yeah feekles that's actually pretty damn similar then, but it's been a whiiiile now since i've used iTunes so i guess times are changing! ;)
Windows = Winamp or MediaMonkey (see Alex, sometimes people do listen).
Mac = iTunes
/discussion :)
Code your own. :p
I don't have a Linux choice. It's be pointless as my Linux box doesn't have any speakers connected. :)

Amarok on linux probably, although i have very little experience myself, i probably wouldn't be able to get the sound working unless it worked out the box ;D
And mediamonkey is based off winamp anyway :)
Yes, I noticed. Just deciding whether to pay for a copy. :)

Defo get gold and you can get it for free, sign up to one of the trailpay things like emusic it gives you an instant 3.x key and you can cancel your subscription without paying anything in your 7 day trial 100% free no hassle no fuss and you get to keep the key ;D I've done it a few times (except i used lovefilm and they were a bit more of a hassle at cancelling but it worked out anyway).
Got Gold. :)
Not going to use it for encoding because I've already done a fair deal of hard work setting up another app for that, but I've turned off a few things that MediaMonkey does better and will let it trawl the library and do stuff to it later.
