I had this once, the only thing I could do was to download div x and watch my films and stuff via that, it seemed to get round all the codec issues that WMP would throw up.

Easy way is just to download VLC and use that to play the file. It will play most things.

Otherwise there is a piece of software you can download which inspects the file and tells you exactly what codec you need. however I can't remember he name.

What's this VLC thingy then?! I don't mind downloading it I just don't want the pickmeister being all "You've downloaded lots of random stuff again haven't you!" :D

As long as I can justify it :D

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html - you want the 'Latest Packages' one. That's for Vista.
If that doesn't work (or even if it does, I don't like VLC much) , I recommend http://shark007.net/ - the Shark Codec package which'll let you play pretty much anything in anything.

I use 2 codecs normally. XVid and DivX.

However if all else fails I use VLC too. :)

Zoom Player has a nifty codec installer built into the installation :D

Failing that grabbing the CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/) helps!

CCCP is one of the first things I install on a new install.
