Lamb pathia
Chicken samba (mild and sweet but omg so addictive)
Lamb Morricha (extremely hot)

Indian meal has to be
2popadoms with lime pickle or mango chutney
curry
pesharwi or kema naan
Onion bahji.

Don't need rice.

Usually go lamb for tomato or hot currys and chicken for creamy or sweet dishes.

From a takeaway:
Chicken Korma - love all curries but I tend to find this full of flavour from my local takeaway.
Pilau Rice
Garlic Naan
Bombay Potatoes
Onion Bahjis

If I'm cooking it:
Chicken.....hasn't really got a name :p Somewhere in between a korma and a tikka masala as it's spicier than a korma but is creamy and coconutty.
Pilau Rice
Peshwari naan
Bombay potatoes (not mastered a recipe I really love though)
Onion bahjis

:D

I'm also not adverse at all to having chips with Indian or Chinese. I figure I enjoy it and it's my choice etc ;)

My choices vary dependant on mood...

Chicken Chat
Lamb Rogan Josh or Lamb Dansak or Chicken Tikka Massala or Chicken Dupizia
Onion Bhaji
peshwari or garlic naan
Pilau rice

I also enjoy Green Chicken Massala from my cookbook... (Apple, Spring Onions, Coriander, yoghurt and ricotta) mmmmm

How do you make onion bahjis I haven't made any decent ones yet. Also how do you get them totally crispy all the way through. Do you just have to cook them to the death. Don't like onion bahjis that are crispy on the outside and soft in the centre. Cripsy for the win.

Haly
19-08-2009, 16:28
Sorry, misphrased it there. Onion Bahjis are the main thing I buy as I haven't a clue how to make them well!

I try and find something different every time, but have a soft spot for the standard chicken biryani, any really rich curry with lamb, or a proper tikka masala where the chicken comes on a griddle and sauce separate. Also like saag aloo, panak paneer, and will always order a chapati. I find the naan a bit too filling - would rather have more curry!

Friend of mine's Mum said she'd teach me some traditional recipes but not had the chance to go. Having tasted it though, it won't taste like takeaway as it's entirely different due to being authentic.

From a takeaway:

Spinach and chicken pakora
Sher Khan or Tiger Khan chicken or sometimes a Tikka Mohanwala
Mator Ponir
Chipathis

At home usually a chicken dish which is medium hot (I tend to like to vary it) with naan bread.

Madras and up might need several pints of water though :)

Chicken or lamb tikka dupiaza, onion pilau and hot chapati bread.

All complimented with ice cold Kingfisher lager.

The main dish I have varies depending on where I'm getting the curry from. If I get it from the nice place in my town then it's usually a Lamb Tikka Bhuna. If I'm at the place where my parents live then it's usually Chicken Razala. As for sides either pilau or lemon rice (depending on where I am), peshwari nan and bombay aloo or saag aloo.

Traditional Tandoori restaurant:

Popadums + sides
Lamb byriani or jalfrezi
If the latter simple plain boiled rice
Naan or Peshwari naan
Brindal Bhaji
Bhindi Bhaji
Tarka Dhaal
Saag Paneer

Bangladeshi restaurant:

all of the above but as a main i'd have Lamb Rezala

Funny thing is the best curry I ever had (apart from at Piali's house) was a Gujurati restaurant which is entirely vegetarian as they are typically the "tight" region of India and don't really eat meat either (I am joking about the "tight" it's just what the Bengali's call them).

My favourite curries are from the East or South Indian region, though strangely the Gujurat region is West - the style of cooking is so wildly different though it's fascinating.

Traditional Eastern/Southern curries include a lot of fish - and actually having tried it, it's bloody marvellous but never my first choice strangely - lamb IMO offers the best texture and flavour for a curry, though I'd have fish over chicken.

Fish and lentils are the staple for East Indians and boy they do it and do it good! Telapia and Dhal are probably the best dishes in the world - but I seldom have them in restaurants as they never seem to be quite up to muster (so far).

My curry of choice is either Lamb Tikka Makhani/Chicken Tikka Massala/Butter Chicken/Lamb Passanda with Pilau rice and a garlic and chilli naan bread!

I can't remember what it was called but me and my old flat mate used to go to for a Ruby after the pub. Our favourite dish was a creamy, coconutty almost Korma but a bit spicier and with apricot in the sauce. Was awesome.

Pilau rice

and keep the poppadoms and pickles coming till we can eat no more.

Oooh crikey, my eyes are always far too big for my stomach when I'm ordering a takeaway. I would go for something like lamb rogan josh, bhuna or biryani with a garlic/coriander naan (or spinach/potato naan which I've recently discovered) and plain old pilau rice. I'd look for someone to share an onion bhaji with and also love saag aloo and tarka dhal. Mmmmm! We never have an Indian takeaway between the two of us.

Incidentally, it's my Grandad's birthday this weekend and we're doing a curry night for him. My Mum, brother's girlfriend and I are all making various bits so it's going to be a proper feast.

I've not quite decided on what I'm going to do yet for the main curry part, but I'll definitely be making some garlic & coriander naan breads & veggie samosas. My favourite meat for a curry is lamb, but my brother's gf doesn't like it :( Might do it anyway... she doesn't have to eat it :p

This seems to be true of the US in general. My boss (East Coast) has made the same comment. He's been educated both in the British curry experience and in cooking them himself. It's very rare he doesn't end up in a curry house when over here (often several times). :)

I made Lamb Rogan Josh last night for our Indian feast tonight. Cooked it half an hour longer than it said, just to make sure that the lamb fell apart. It tasted great and will be even better today - stews/curries etc. are always better if cooked the night before for some reason! I also made the filling for some vegetable samosas, which tastes fantastic and will wrap them up and cook them later.

Later on I'll be making potato bhajias, fresh green chutney (mint & coriander), naan bread and chapatis :D

Mum and my bro's GF have made between them; Beef curry (Gordon Ramsay recipe), chiken tikka massala, chicken dhansak, tarka dhal, aubergine curry, mango chutney, raita, pilaf and some other stuff I can't remember :p

I live with the best curry maker in the world. He very instinctive and can throw things together and make it taste divine. His Loochis are legendary, as are his garlic and ginger spiced fried potatoes - or Posh Chips as we call them.

I will be gutted when he moves out.

I am currently trying to talk him into moving next door...

That sounds like an absolutely amazing feast Kate! Hugely envious :D

When I'm walking about again, I'm determined to cook a huge Indian feast again. Missed my curries. And I really want to learn to do more things like Bahjis.

Just about all the food was made by either me, my Mum or my brother's GF. Every single dish I tried (and I tried them all :p) was absolutely delicious and it all smelt absolutely wonderful.

Definitely worth making my own naan breads too. They're so easy to do and taste gorgeous. Really must do much more Indian cooking.

From a new-ish place in Banbury, Purple Mango. Think we'll sit in next time.

Kashmiri something (Chicken with Kheema minced lamb)
Pilau and kheema rice
Onion bhajis
And some free poppadoms/pickle/sauce etc.

No naan though. :(

While I was waiting, the waiters kept feeding the kids choccies and trying to forcefeed me pints of Kingfisher.

Ice cold Kingfisher is the finest lager going. Fact.
