View Full Version : Stupid ponders...
I'm not really thinking straight at the moment but there's something that's annoying me.
Can ducks suck? They kind of... what I would call kerwaffle if I had to name it... yeh. They kerwaffle the water and things. But like can they suck?
And what about blowing? If you put a candle infront of a duck could it blow it out?
I'm being serious too! I'm really confused and need to know!
Please feel free to add more stupid ponders that need answering so I don't feel so silly!
Well, ducks respire in a similiar fashion to us but I don't think they have the capacity to manipulate air in the same way we do. We use our mouths, lips and even tongue to force air into a distinct "blow" and "suck". So, no, I think they can't.
I reckon if you squeezed a duck hard enough and quickly enough it would produce a big enough exhalation to blow a flame out. The noise would be comical too.
A bit like a "quackooooppphhhh!!!!"

I think if you had a reeeally small candle then the duck could blow it out, but otherwise no!
How about if you had a really big duck?

It might eat the candle instead!
How about if you had a really big duck?
I wouldn't want to squeeze it. I might be daft at times but I'm not completely quackers.

:numpty:
More importantly, do they give blowjobs?
Could explain the popularity of fishing with men?
What happens to a duck if it flies upside down?
It quacks up.

I think if you squeeze a Duck hard it will crap on you, therefore I would say if you turn said Duck around you could crap the candle out quite easily.
Settled.

My mate used to squeeze his cat Ghengis, if you did it right, he (Ghengis, not Alan) would sound like bagpipes.
Mind you, bagpipes sound like cats being squeezed anyway.

It's actually our lungs that do the "sucking" and "blowing" by expanding/contracting. Expanding creates a bigger capacity which needs to be filled... which is done by "sucking" air in through our mouth :)
Yes but it's not that easy to blow a candle out with a simple exhale. You use your mouth and lips to force the air into a narrow blast, making the exhaling hair more narrow causing more disruption to the flame.
Try it, get a lighter and relax your mouth, exhale as hard as you can to blow out the flame but keep your mouth still. ;)

Duck suck? No me dear they have no lips. They also have no esophageal muscles hence when they drink/eat they have to tip their heads up and let it run down their necks. What they do is scoop water into their beaks and tip back and that's how they drink. :)

Must be a right pain in the neck if they get a leaf or something stuck
:p
I've thought this for years, wouldn't ducks look really silly with lips?
Many a time have I rofl'ed thinking about that!
Have I been sniffing glue, or did Tiggy just make me picture a duck with lips? :D
I think it's harsh to call ducks 'Stupid ponders'.

See now I prefer the whole "I dont have the plot and have no interest in finding it because not having the plot is much more fun!" thing ;D
How about the "I do have the plot but I have no interest in following it" thing? ;D

I'm sure I've seen a duck sneeze before, maybe that would blow out a candle.
Johnny Ball could answer this. He'd just grab a candle, matches, some pepper and a duck and find out..... and he'd encourage you to try it at home!
I've seen a pigeon sneeze, it was one of the cutest noises I've ever heard. Hehe

I'm so sorry - I tried to let this slide, but I'm turning back to teacher mode. :o
Respiration is not to be confused with breathing. Respiration is a chemical reaction within living cells in order to release energy and therefore is the same in all organisms. It is not the processes of in/exhalation or gas exchange. The confusion arises probably because of "artificial respiration" and other misleading use of the term.
I'm sorry :(
Oh, and ducks don't "blow".. Actually, there's an MP3 of Donald duck being given a...erm.. <ahem> (maybe by Daisy Duck) now I think of it, from an American chat show ;D
Gah - I'll eat my words. Depends on whether the term is being used in a cellular, biochemistry or physiological sense It can therefore be used to describe the entire progress of oxygen from air to cells, where the reaction then takes place.
Pwned! Can you pwn yourself? I'll have to try tonight.
He just did....therefore you can :D

I saw a duck fall off a roof once, I don't think he blew on the way down.

I miss my bunny sneezing :(
Babies sneezing is much sweeter especially really little babies :D
Ducks are much better when fried to the level of crispy and served with pancakes anyway. I care not a jot whether they can blow or suck!

I don't know how to answer your question, but I'd like to point out the OP title is possibly the best pun ever, intentional or not :D
For this ponder, I will take the name of Jo.
Hi ponderous people, I'm Jo.
I have 20 hairs on my legs and am of an average build
If I eat cake and pie for the next year and put on lots of weight, will I have more hair on my legs? Or will those 20 hairs be the only 20 hairs there just further apart?
Regards,
Jo.
