I did a backup using Nero 6 a few weeks ago and last week my hard disk failed.
I've fitted the new one today, gone to restore the files from Nero and it comes back saying it can't restore them.. It can't open the compressed files?
Just before the last backup, I uploaded most of this years pic.. If I can't get the backup from the restoe then I'm in lots of trouble.
Any ideas?
Where did you save the backup file? Could it have got corrupted when the disk died?
PS - I know nothing about Nero, and not much more about backups (or so you'd believe if you looked at how many I've done)

I saved it to my external drive :( I should have done a straight copy rather than using a third party compressor... It appears to be having problems with de-compressing the file.
I have all my pics from Germany on there.. Damn, i should have known better :(

You have any luck with this?

I upgraded Nero the latest version.. I don't get the same error but it get a “Browse for Folder” dialog box stating me “Select the parent of your backup folder” as below….

????
What does this mean? I can’t select anything? Surely this should be a simple case of restoring the files?
Why the hell is it looking for thumbs.db? Maybe copy a thumbs.db from elsewhere to the directory where the backup file is and try again?

tried that Paul, when I do it fails to restore, then moves on to the next file which gives me the same dialog box.. I have no idea why it's giving me this. It's almost like it's saying that the file has to be there before I can restore it :(
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that Nero existed on the drive that failed and has been replaed.. The Windows drive remains unchanged so was wondering if it had anything to do with corrupted registry entries.
So after re-installing Nero I removed it then ran their Nero "cleanup" program. I then re-intalled Nero 6 + update.. No luck..
I have filled in a customer support ticket.. I doubt i'll get much help.. Damn annoyed that I done a backup but I'm restricted accessing it.. Should have done a straight forward folder copy within explorer.
How big is the backup file? If you can get it to me I can see if I can restore it on my machine.. gotta be worth a try.
Apparantly, 7-Zip might read .nco files, if that's what you're trying to restore Huddy. And also possibly WinRAR.

Does that help you?

Cheers chaps.. Captain that looks promising although it took a few reads to understand what he is actually doing :)
Will give that a go tonight. and if that fails, i'll give Winrar a try and if that fails I may have to take you up on your offer Burble.
Yeah, I didn't quite get it either, but then I don't have the software. :)

I hope this helps, as I had been pounding my head against the door trying to figure this one out.
ahhhh so that explains his sorry grasp of decent English then :D

:( that didn't work although I'm still not convinced i'm reading that guys post correctly... But I tried lots of things simular to his discription.
Tried using Winrar too.. - no luck..

Did you try 7-zip?
ahh no.. I tried winrar.. will give this ago later..What's the difference between 7-zip and winrar?
7-zip supports a great deal more file formats I believe. How big is the backup file dude? I'm quite happy to take a stab at getting the data out myself, like Burble is :)
I'm only offering to see if Huddy has his porn stash in the backup file ;)

Hmm i'm not sure cos i'm at work.. Basically i have a partition called files which holds all my media, saved games and you guessed it ;) .
I think the partition came to about 32gb but not sure of the compressed size. It fits easily onto one DVD.
I also have a video of the mrs stripping for me (and a bit more) on our honeymoon.. which we acidently showed to our parents one evening.. I put it on thinking it was the trip video, went into the kitchen to make a tea.. then all i could hear was.. yewwwww.. and my mum shouted PAUL!!! you're disgusting haha lol. My dad ran out of the room into the toilet :D
Hahahaha! Only you Huddy.
If you wanna throw a copy of the backup onto a DVD and post it off to me, lemme know and I'll PM you my address.

haha after that I bet you will.. :D
No seriously, I may take you up on that. I'll try the 7-zip and wait for a resonse from Nero.. they got back to me asking for a few screen dumps. If nothing happens by the end of this week is that ok for you to have a try? I know you're on your travels soon but there is no rush. :)
Fine with me. I sod off to Phoenix on the 13th, back on Saturday 28th then off to Japan on the 31st so I'll have a bit of time to play about with it.

I'll upload the file into my personal webspace tonight for downloading :(

it isn't in it's supported extenstions ?
.nbi is not a supported achive it says?

Burble, I'm going to PM you the link for the .nbi file. It's about 10meg.
Cheers mate
Sorry to say it, but I don't think the backup worked properly. You've ended up with a 10meg backup file but according to Nero BackItUp there was 32.68Gb backed up in the first place.
I think you're beign told that there are files missing from the backup because they weren't backed up in the first place :( It seems it was just header information in the backup file and none of your actual files.
From what I can make out there should be 2 files, nci and nco, with nco actually containing the compressed data. The nci is possibly some sort of index, and may not be needed for a restore.

I was just about to say the same sort of thing. I did a test backup and ended up with an nbi and an nco. Without the nco I got the same error as Huddy.

oh dear... oh f****ing dear.. :(
I'm sure it didn't create an .nco folder :(
Thanks for trying anyway chaps
Not going to use Nero again.. just use a straight forward folder copy in future

wonders why it didn't create this folder or if it did, where did it put it?
I really appreciate you looking at that for me - Burble/Daz.. :)
Should be an nco file, not a folder. Never used Nero backup in my life so I'm not sure where it would try to put it, though it seems Burble just tried a backup. I assume they're in the same directory, Paul?
And there are some decent backup packages out there Paul, that can give some nice benefits. You just chose a bad one it seems :( By all means copy your files somewhere else (I do that all the time), but if you want a bare metal restore option (IE, recover the whole system without a re-install), then look at Ghost. The latest version is just Powerquest Driveimage rebranded (bought by Symantec), and when your system fails, you just boot from the install CD, locate your backup file, and restore the entire system to a bootable state.
Used it a couple of times, worked great.
Aye, Ghost is awsome!! I can do a full re-install in around 10 mintutes. Keep hunting for that .nco file huddy :)
Could set a search running, might take a while if you have a lot of partitions/data though. Search for *.nco

i'm def going to do that tonight. The only thing I can think off is that it created it on the drive that failed.. Even though I specified to send it to my external HDD.
Correction, I ended up with an nbi and several nco files - 1 nci file per file backed up.
The backup I made was of d:\my documents\Avnet CMS\ and I sent the backup to my F drive. The directory and file structure I ended up with was as follows:
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/1645/backup1yj5.jpg
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/1958/backup2ce7.jpg
EaglesP being the machine name or your username? So Huddy is looking for a folder with the format YYYYDDMM_Time_Machine/Username
Username.
Searching for *.nco would be a good start and they should be on the same drive as the nbi.

I didn't get a folder as described above. Just the .nbi file.
Looks quite conclusive to be honest.. I haven't seen any icons looking like that. It's quite clear that these are the files holding the data and the .nbi is merely an index.
This is making sense now.. The message I get is asking for these .nco files as it's expecting them in it's "parent" directory but it's not there.
Will search tonight for those .nco files.. My guess is that they either never got created or they were on the drive that failed.
What state is the 'failed' drive in? Nasty horrible clicking, or just unreadable?

RMA'd and a replacement is on the way...
It wasn't coming up in the installed SCSI drive list during POST, so it wasn't communicating with the system at all. The Sumsung diagnostics tool couldn't pick the drive up for testing. In windows, it wasn't listed. Scan have verified the fault today.
I bought another replacement anyway and that works fine.
I enclosed a covering letter to Scan/Samsung asking if they could retrieve the data.. but I doubt they will do anything.
Any luck finding those files then dude?

Any luck finding those files then dude?
full system scan.. no .nbi files :(
not my week :(
i guess it stands to reason :
.nbi = nero backup index, .nbo = nero backup objects.
interstingly, all the backups i've done before for the last year using nero, never created an .nbo file. It was just chance that before i did a major upgrade during the summer, I decided to do a explorer copy.
It's NCO files you're looking for dude :/
