View Full Version : Derren Brown Predicting Lottery and the show on now
Anyone watching this on E4 right now?
Why did he turn the number 6 lady away?
He seems to have a preference for men in this show - are they easier to read?!

Odds on his lottery prediction being because the draw is time delayed 5 minutes or something and they've given the BBC a bung to be able to see the results early? :p
I mean lets face it, if he could genuinely predict the numbers he'd have cleaned them out.

He's admitted himself several times that there's always more to it than he makes out, i'm sure there's a catch somewhere but then this is why he's famous and i'm not; i can't for the life of me figure out how he will do it.

How the chuff would he know that someone was wanting to shave their nads though, or what someones new kitten was called, or that their Dad had just died, or that they won a house in a competition......etc etc
Brain hurts again!
PHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBSSSSSSSSSIIICCCC CCCCLLLLLLEEEEEEEE!!!!
He's not allowed to show the numbers til after the draw - convenient that.
Were the people involved (or friends/family/acquaintances) interviewed beforehand? If so, were they asked any leading questions? That's how it's usually done.
As for the Lotto results, what was going on off-camera?

Howwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww SOMEONE TELL ME HOW!!!!!
As for the Lotto results, what was going on off-camera?
Quite.
There wasn't a continuous shot (and even if there was, it wouldn't be beyond editing techniques to mask half the screen)
Watch on friday noob :p - I just don't get why he couldn't have written them down before they were called. At least we could have seen him write them.

Impressive!
Will be very interesting to see how he did that.
Balls were in view at all times *snigger*, movement of them matched the movement of the camera, he touched the balls afterwards *snigger* and the numbers moved as expected...
Yup - I'm impressed with this.
*edit* Will be re-watching the C4HD stream later on... Once the film I'm watching is done.
If you've recorded it - play it back and when he gets to the bit where all 6 numbers are drawn and before they get sorted numerically - watch the left most ball very closely - it appears to lift up slightly...
Hmmmm
Sorry I was out magicking it up! (Now there's a surprise :p)!!
Gutted I missed it though! Boo!
*wonders if it's on catch up*
Why did he turn the number 6 lady away?
So he could make a big thing of it at the end, it's all about the finish!
I did notice Derren bobs his head back and forth like a chicken occasionally.
There's a clip I've seen where you can see the left hand ball suddenly jump about 2mm higher. It's very hard to see, but it does do it. I'm going with a split screen.

I'll be disappointed if it is. At one of his recent live shows I saw (I think it was called An Evening Of Wonders) he had a box suspended above the stage throughout the show which at the end was lowered and inside was a scroll with everything that had been spoken about during the show (including stuff, obv, that had some come from the audience).
I'm assuming the same mechanics are at work here, some sort of misdirection. He said at the end of the TV show that he'd tell us how to do it on Friday, so hopefully it's not relying on camera trickery.

It was done on a program a little while ago, but with the TARDIS. A family watched their son walk into the tardis, and simultaneously walking around a huge TARDIS on the inside.
The family were truly baffled until it was revealed that the back of the tardis was in a splitscreen and the image paused. The front of the tardis still had movement to convince them it was still a live feed, but in the mean time, they connected the rear of the TARDIS to the full room.
I'm not sure how it's done when it's live, probably the same as pre-recorded but has to be done extremely quickly and seamlessly. I think Derren keeping very quiet and still has the numbers were drawn helps with the trick because it makes you focus on him more, wondering why he's stunned into silence. Has he got it right, or wrong? etc. Your eyes are drawn away from the balls to hopefully miss the minute changes to them as the live feed is restored and the balls move ever so slightly from their old position.
I'm going for camera trickery too, but it would have to be more than 2mm. Under those conditions, 2mm is very roughly one pixel at 1080p resolution, which no-one broadcasts in. :)

It could contain a blank scroll and it's true that it's not tampered with and pure skill of the hand gives him the opportunity to replace the scroll in the box with one in his hand or up his sleeve before it's unravelled. A stagehand could keep the scroll updated and pass it to him just before the box is lowered in a split second his hand is offset. He easily fooled the audience as he seemingly swapped places with the gorilla so swapping a scroll should be easy.

It's painfully simple, but very effective. I didn't realise how he had done it until I realised the stand was slightly offstage, covering the swap. :)

Looking at that video from youtube I suspect camera trickery because the thing just won't keep still! I'd have shot that camera man for moving around so much ;D
I think the camera movement was to make it harder for people think its split screen. Trying to match it up live might be hard.
However he does it, he's a clever and entertaining bugger.

Apart from the head bobbing. Which now I've noticed it, is a bit annoying.
It's a nervous tick of his. He does it a lot, most of which seems to miss the TV edits.

I only noticed it on the stage show last night.
we were in the second row at his recent show - he spent the whole night no more than 10 foot away from me (we were directly central) and he has several little ticks, the bobbing being the worst. he also has an eye thing going on.
On another note, I love him and am going to marry him.

I love him too, but in a manly "RAWR" way.
P.S. I'd never play cards with him.

I'd be worried if I were Derren's boyfriend. How could you be sure that you weren't straight before you met him?
i don't think it's camera trickery tbh, that's not his style.
for him to go on friday "aye 2 cameras, anyone could have done" would be a pure cop out.
i think it's far more likely he's green screened the TV and filmed 14 million possibilities in the year he's been planning it. but even that seems a bit technowizardry as opposed to his usual tricks.
If it is camera trickery I don't think it'll be anything as advanced as people are speculating. I've seen the green screen thing mentioned a couple of times for the TV screen, but you can clearly see his/the card he's holding reflection in the screen. The second camera is part of it I'm sure, if only to say 'if you view it from this angle you'll see exactly how we duped you'.
I was just thinking about the 2nd camera. It was never really used. Doesn't seem like him to over look something like that so it must have had a purpose.
EXPLAIN Magician Girl! :p :D

Watched this last night and I'm having a quiet night in on Friday just to see how he does it!
I've read somewhere that his head-bobbing thing is done on purpose but I can't remember why.
Is he really gay?

I noticed he did it after saying 'something radically different' and nodded as if to reinforce an idea in your head (a sort of subliminal/conditioning type thing). Not quite sure what the point of that is tho.

If it's any consolation he only came out back in 2007 :)

Because he's half chicken, and chickens are magic.

Is he, well bugger me, you never can tell these days can you?
She's got NOTHING!
I'm in agreement. He's not a magician, he's an illusionist ;)
He's not an illusionist though! He's a mentalist!!
:p :D
And yeh, bingo. I have no idea how he did it!
;)
(ooh and edit really... he's a combo of things just what he's famous for is his mentalism :))
Apparently there's a moment he looks up at the person swapping the balls. The slightest smile comes in and is instantly hidden again. It's very suble, so subtle it could just be the compression on youtube. :D

He describes himself as an illusionist, not a magician - that was a direct quote from him.... But of course, you can't believe a word the bugger says ;)
Really, he doesn't exist.
Pheebs, explain? Even if she did know, she is not allowed to! On pain of unmentionables! :p
That's why they do the hypnosis thing - programming in case she goes astray.
Hahaha! Genuinely I don't have a clue :) I was messing :)
I would doubt Derren Brown would ever say he was a magician! A lot of "magicians" don't like to be known as "magicians". In fact, when asked if they will perform magic many of them will say "I will perform an illusion" or something along those lines.
All I would say is he's most famous in the magic world for his mentalist acts - those are his signature performances. Unlike, say, David Copperfield whose signature acts are illusions (although he's a blooming awesome card magician :))

Ooooooh! Nobody won the lottery this week, does that mean anything?
Explained (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rHPh5Xanss) :D
Lol :)
It can't be split screen. It wouldn't make a very good show tonight if he said "yeah, I cheated using a camera trick". He also says he doesn't like doing camera tricks so I can't wait till the show is on tonight!

I've just wasted 30 minutes of my life on the arse water that is Darren Brown, never again. Utter bunk which just plays on people's susceptibility, I respected some of the stuff he did before but tonight show was utter rubbish and backs up my thoughts that the guy is a complete charlatan.
MB
Those last words "It's just a trick" were the truest thing he said all evening.
Well, I think the ball fixing explanation is far more plausible than subconscious writing of conveniently divisible by 23 numbers averaged out and then conveniently kept secret from the people who had just done the guessing :p
But I suppose that sort of thing "isn't his style" ;)
Ultimately I doubt either of the explanations in the show are even remotely close to what he actually did.
The thing where he got the guy to stamp on the polystyrene cups worried me a bit. I always pick number 13, it's my lucky number, I would've killed Jenny :(
Looking forward to next weeks show.
I still can't believe he's gay though. He made a joke about gays and everything!

Annnnd that's why he's a legend! To make even suspecting people watch him... well. Clever man :)
I haven't watched all of it, but 'the wisdom of crowds' is utter BS. Averaging lottery numbers selected by a crowd will always tend towards 25, so having just seen the 3/6 prediction (I'm on +1), it's no surprise that they were all in that area, and guess what - the three numbers that matched were also all in the 20s.
Edit - OK - so he changed the rules on a subsequent attempt. Still tending towards the mid-point though.
Pheebs, yes, he's clever, but let's be honest here - there isn't such a great divide between illusionist and con artist - they both rely on mis-direction. I'm not saying he is a con artist, just that being clever isn't necessarily the most important thing. :)

Exactly. I think it's backfired on him and the splitscreen fooled nobody. He's cooked this crap up to make it seem like he hasn't just basically used technology to perform an illusion. Otherwise, the people who do CGI for films and TV are all "illusionists"
Edited my post a bit as I was watching, but I still don't buy it. It's just so easy to fake.
Just seen what he's proposing for next week. I really hope he doesn't try to do that 'live' on TV. Illusionists don't show how they induce suggestion and/or hypnosis live on TV for one very good reason - they're not in control of the viewer's environment.
Ah but he's already done that. He made us all watch the show tonight and clearly he's on commission by the lottery peeps with all those ads. He can reach you through the tv....oooooh ahhhhhhhh.

There was no way on earth he was going to reveal exactly how he did it. He was always going to give us rubbish tonight to explain "how" he could have done it but not the exact way.
I would suggest though if you get to see him live do go. I'm talking to you here MB, his live shows are so much better than the tosh that was on last night. I said to Kitten quite a few times while watching "utter bollocks!!" to stuff he was saying because in my opinion it was. No way could he have fixed the machine because those numbers would have kept coming up.

Nope, I've seen a few things he's done and I'd have no interest in seeing him live, Pheeb's Aitch wanted to see it, I wouldn't have chosen it and there wasn't a moment in it that I thought 'that's clever' everything screamed fix. I'd much prefer to see 'real' magic a la Paul Daniels than give Mr Brown's claptrap another moment of my time.
MB
all of the stuff last night was drivel, but was quite apparent. he's playing the long game, and won't explain anything till he's done all 5 "events".
i did kinda like how he's moving things in reverse though, there will be something to do with that mentioned later. (the mouse one first with no mouse, then the knife one with a mouse, next one will be something with a knife instead likely)
I think it was more likely they actually fixed the lottery. That way he told you exactly what he did but then claimed he didn't...classic misdirection ;D
I don't care eitherway, I'm still going to marry him.
