Looks like me and Daz are going to NY in January, guess which one of us is more excited than the other? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!! *explodes*

Now, I've actually been a few times before, but Daz is an NY virgin, (huh huh) so apart from the usual Empire State/Statue of Liberty sights we have to see, does anyone have any little gems they would like to share? Clubs, restaurants etc? We are after a particularly good steak house, as we will be there for his birthday, and that’s all he wants to do so far ;)

We will be doing the following as well:

Helicopter tour
Basketball game at Madison Square Garden
Horse and carriage ride
Top of the Rock
A zoo (not sure which one yet)
Ice skating (either Wollman Rink or Rockefeller Centre)

Been doing hotel research as well, and the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square is currently top of the list out of, well, one :D Glowing traveller reviews, and one block from Times Square! Bonus!

Any experiences anyone wants to share with us? :)

I have nothing to share, just that I am sick with Jealousy at you going to NY.

Sounds awesome :D

America has never been a big draw for me, but the more I hear people talk about it the more it hits my radar. Maybe one day we'll manage to get out there.....when we win a load of money or something, hehehe.

Couldnt you include it in your trips to Japan? Even if you stopped over in NY for 2-3 days? :)

Been to NY a couple of times, and might go back again someday (depends on other plans).

Looks like you've got most of the boxes ticked.

I've heard of the Hilton Garden Inn but not been there. Bear in mind being one block from Times Square it'll be busy especially at night, but I'm sure you knew that already. First time I was there I stayed about 10 blocks up from there and the second time 20 blocks. I was still in Times Square within 5-10 minutes and if you're feeling lazy you can always hop on the subway.

Other things to consider:
- Ice Hockey at MSG - if one visit there just isn't enough. :)
- Broadway show - whatever takes your fancy. Don't forget the off-broadway stuff though as it can be cheaper and just as good.
- Shopping. Well duh! I never had a 'thing' for 5th Avenue but I did end up in Macy's (bought a watch there).
- Head over to Booklyn (I think that's the right one). Take your camera. Get that mandatory Manhattan skyline photo that you see on so many postcards - but do a much better job of it as I'm sure you will. :)
- Carnegie Deli - or the other good deli (name escapes me). Steak has to be done, but why go to NY without going to a deli. Don't go on the day you're planning to leave (I made that mistake), and do ask for a doggy bag. If you don't need one, even with Daz in tow, it'll be a miracle. If you're feeling suitably brave, find Katz's Deli (another good deli apparently) and re-enact that scene from When Harry Met Sally. ;D
- I saw on TV once that they do/did cycle tours in the small hours. Completely different view of NY at that time of day and it's the one time of day that the roads are quiet enough to make it practical. Not sure they'll do that in mid winter though. :)

To honest none of the things you've booked were big draws for me, especially the helicopter ride, I'd rather keep the cash and be on the ground close to the city.

We stayed at The Time hotel which is a nice boutique hotel just off Times Sq which is lovely and not over run with business types because the rooms a small for an American hotel.

We did the Empire State, boat trip which is wonderful in Jan with all the ice. We went to Katz's deli (where Harry met Sally), took in some off Broadway shows, went to Tiffany's (bought Aitch's wedding ring there on a whim!), went to ground zero and battery park (men in black HQ building) more shopping, so many things to do which make NY an experience without having to do all the experience things, if that makes any sense? I think my favorite was being on the boat round the statue of Lib with the ice flowing down the river, just beautiful!

Oh we went to the Gogenheim [sp] too

I have researched the hotel inside and out Mark, this is the one we want. 99% of reviews say its not that noisy, I will be requesting a high floor room too :)

Broadway show, forgot to put that! I quite fancy either Lion King, or Wicked, but that box will certainly be ticked :)

You mean Katz Deli? Heard good things about that place too :D
Edit: You just beat me to it MB :D

I did the helicopter tour last time, and its very high on the list to do again :)

Edited my post. Great minds and all that re: Katz's Deli (had to go look up the name though - been past but not in, for my shame). Didn't know MIB was shot at Battery Park, even though I've been there.

Lion King is good - very much recommended and I've been on the stage there (not during a show, I might add ;D). Don't know anything about Wicked though.

Lucky sods. I was there for all of 10 minutes a couple of years ago, only to have a woman walk out into the road without looking with a pram, and call us bloody Canadians. Didn't go any further as we didn't have much time anyway.

My ex is over there around that time too with her uni, i'm envious of you all as it's going to be great weather :(

I meant to mention that in my post, but forgotted. :o

Since I was there it's been refurbed, and G-BOAD (the Concorde I flew on) is there too. If you go, say hello to seat 8D*. ;D

Mark
05-10-2009, 13:23
Good plan! I vaguely knew about the show but didn't realise it was recorded there until I saw the studio (it's rather obvious).

And more nights the better IMO. You've made all that effort to get there so why not enjoy it for as long as you can afford. :)

Will
05-10-2009, 13:30
You need to go to the burger joint which is the lobby of the parker meridien hotel, it's 2/3 blocks down from central park.

Catch a game or an event at maddison sq garden.

Gugenheim is worth a visit.

If the USS intrepid is open definitely go it's amazing.

Yeah it'd be nice but won't be able to afford it by then although it's not excessively expensive to go there these days, we still need to recoup after Cyprus and our winter holiday too.

Could have been fun though! :D

The prices fluctuate massively, the prices the weeks either side go up about £100! I dont mind the cold, I love NY in the snow, beautiful :):)

Yeah it does, strange really.

I agree about the winter in NY, it's great!

Mark
05-10-2009, 14:46
I should clarify - it isn't the cold that particularly bothers me - it's walking around in ice and snow. Ended up doing that unexpectedly last time I was in NY. I'd love to go there and just look, but that rather defeats the point. ;D

As for the prices, heaven knows how they work them out. Blindfold and pin I suspect. :)

will do, from what I see service is excellent, rooms small but nice

don't intend spending much time in hotel tbh

Hopefully it's not like the minibus we got when we went a few years ago. They didn't tell us the coach didn't go to all hotels, so they dropped us in the middle of downtown and made us wait in the freezing cold till another minibus came and picked us up. It took much longer than it really should have, so hopefully you won't have the same issues :)

If that shuttle company is that good then I'd be keen to know too - though it's a flat fare of $45 for a cab, if it is as good as you say it is that would be brilliant.

Last time I stayed at the red roof inn near Korea town (56 W and 6th I think) very good, and works out to less than $100 a night. :)

Dee
21-10-2009, 15:24
Super Shuttle if memory serves?

You dont even have to book, go to the Ground Transportation desk after youve collected your luggage, and the agents will put you on a "collection list". They put certain people together if they are all going to be dropped off in the same area. Either way, its about a 45 minute wait I think whether you've booked or not, its a mare when you're just soooooooooooo excited and want to get going already :D

Indeed they are. If it's anything like the cinema we went to in Florida a couple of months ago, if you get the largest drink and largest popcorn you actually get a free refill of each if you manage to finish them :)

Wow, I actually feel sick now! ;D

They always look at me strangely in the states when I ask for plain water :o I don't really like fizzy drinks - though have them from time to time, certainly if it's hot!

Kitten

really? They give us still water in SF all the time. We tend not to order other drinks, just take the water :)

I seem to have communication problems with the yanks. IF I say "iced water" then they get me... then again they don't understand "pankcakes"... so it's all sorts of weird.

You won't be disappointed with a Jean-Georges restaurant. I went to one in the Bahamas (cafe martinique) which was nice except it was all rebuilt American-style faux-French ie. to us Brits, tacky - that's the decor though. Food was absolutely sublime.

And that's the cheaper restaurant of the 2 there! The posh one is Dune at the Ocean Club (where they filmed casino royale); parents went there and couldn't fault it in anyway whatsoever. Which is a lot from them :)

I also recommend Mesa grill - again not been to the NY one but the Bahamas one does the best steak I've ever tasted, and a superb wine list.

Enjoy, you jammy dodger, I am sat here very jealous :D

Grandad
25-10-2009, 12:56
The signature restuarant in NY looks classical but a bit bland

though the chance of a Michelin 3* meal for what will prob be "only" about $400 all in isn't one to be missed

I must be missing some sort of gene, because I just wouldn't enjoy a meal that cost me $400. I hate pretentious places and being fussed over, it just makes me feel uncomfortable. Plus I've never been to a posh restaurant that wasn't pretentious. I'd be much happier in a small place, full of local atmosphere and tasty food you can eat with your fingers ;). I think you get far more feel for a place in a place where the natives eat, and a lot more for your money too.

It can be like that over here but in the US it is no where near as bad, overly fawning maybe but not really experienced pretentious

It's like if you go in a Gucci shop over here and you don't fit their idea of what a customer should they look down their nose at you, I would have no problem going in one in the US in jeans and a football shirt

just to add $400 is for both of us and I expect it to include drinks, tax , tip etc

I've eaten in a lot of expensive restaurants Stateside (as a guest of someone else) and I feel they're just as bad as here, tbh, just more plastic ;) Especially in New York, it's just so...i dunno, false.

Grandad
25-10-2009, 20:25
I agree re false but that's the American service culture generally

The meal is for Cheryl's birthday so don't mind splashing out a bit

After all I have to maintain the standards that a woman from Stanton Hill would expect ( Dee should get that one ;) )

Mesa had the nicest food I've ever eaten, and awesome service:D

Mind you this is the Bahamas - it's so awesomely cool over there (and the Bahamians love seeing us Brits, mainly because we're not American I think lol), and every restaurant was superb - especially the local places!

Always best to go to local places I think but every now and then a 'posh' place is nice to go to - just as you say keeping away from anything pretentious / too formal. I don't think my family would survive in a formal restaurant :D

As far as I know they film the whole thing then show it.

My mate came back last week from a few days in NY and saw Matt Damon filming near the courthouse. I couldn't stop hearing the south park 'Maattt Daaaymon" when she told me ;D

They were filming SATC when we were there last, there were flowers on the road by the library, now we know why!!

I went to NYC in January 2002 for a Graphic Design trip which due to world events turned into a very memorable week that I don't think could be experienced now.

The terrorist attacks on WTC didn't drastically alter my desired itinery with the exception of a set of rooftop panoramics which didn't get taken from Towers 1 & 2, and such distinct landmarks were also missing from my Empire State Pana.

The ground zero site was a strange and emotional experience - unpleasant, yet fulfilling to visit. Charred building fronts surrounding the site, contrasting the stark & vivid colours of memorial flags, banners and tied up dedications to those lost.

The wind beaten flags and banners flashed such vibrancy and were matched with vast crowds drawn to the sheer enormity of what had happened at this site. From a distance, it took on an almost carnival appearance, and yet standing near the chain link fence still plastered in desperate appeals to the whereabouts of missing loved ones some 4 months on, what hit me most was the near-silent atmosphere.

The rest of new york was a constant cascade of footfalls, car horns, transport noise and general 'bustle', yet this vast and now derelict square was in it's own little bubble.

I loved visiting new york - I was lucky enough to visit the Guggenheim when an installation piece by Matthew Bourne was exhibiting, I tried my best to get around the 'main sections of the Met' without getting lost or hungry, the MoMA helped me to realise that dropping Art in pursuit of Graphics was the right choice and most of all... the FOOD IS JUST HUGE!!!!!!!! :D

Never before have I been presented with so much food for $1.90 at breakfast time, well, actually any time of day!

I would very much like to return one day for another week or so of 'touristy stuff' - seeing the sites, experiencing the enormity of the city and undertaking some of the activities you have listed Dee - a helicopter trip would be amazing!

I really look forward to seeing your photography efforts following your trip - I hope you both have a wicked time :)

Dee
18-11-2009, 15:21
Thanks Jingo, nice to hear other peoples experiences :)

Someone said to me we have to try the helicopter tour at night! I never even considered it, but its certainly worth looking into.

Kari's decided that whenever we fly to the UK we'll do a layover and day in New York. It breaks up an ugly journey (2 flights totally roughly 20 hours of flying, and 7+ hours layover in an airport on the mainland.)

Kind of looking forward to seeing a bit of NYC, hopefully we'll be heading to the UK some time in late Spring.

Thanks for posting that Kitten - we havent seen her yet, this morning we wanted to but the mini had no charge and we had the wrong plug adapters :o

Glad to see her in one piece :)

Oh, and hello from NY! The nice hotel people put a cake in our room for my birthday and left me a card, nice touch :D

don't worry guys, Helen (at the hotel) sent me a reply to the email about the details & said that she's eating and using the tray (Ebby, not Helen), and seems absolutely fine, just waits til everyone has gone away. She's getting braver though :D
