View Full Version : How many TVs do you have and how much do you watch?

This is inspired by the recent Electric Dreams programme on BBC Four.

The family (obviously very middle-class) had SIX television sets in their house before the start of the procedure.

I find this quite incredible, we have two tellies in our house, one is the main set in the living room and the other is a joint tv/video/dvd player in Emma's bedroom but it's hardly ever used and doesn't even have an aerial plugged into it.

A few years ago I bought a TV for our bedroom but it was so rarely used that I ended up taking it out and getting rid of it.

I personally don't watch a lot of telly, I'm not one to sit down and flick through the channels looking for something to watch. If there's something specific I want to see then I'll make a point of it, but that's it really. I'm not one to just turn the telly on just because I'm in the room. I'll watch what I want and then turn it off, or go elsewhere.

Ironically though, I'm tying this with Criminal Justice in because I saw the first series and enjoyed it and discovered that a second series had been made so I 'on demanded' it.

I also still don't 'get' breakfast TV. The last thing on my mind when I get up in the morning is to turn the television on.

My kids are somewhat different. The second they get home from school, the box is turned on and they'll just watch any old crap that's on. Well, I say 'watch', it's more just like on in the background.

Lunchtime at work is the same. We have a TV in our restaurant area and I'll go in there at dinner time and start eating my sarnies and every day someone comes in, turns the telly on and just sits reading a paper while scoffing, not even looking at the set.

I just don't get the 'must have the telly on' attitude.

So. Back to the original title. How many TV sets do you have in your house and how much do you watch? What's your attitude to the telly?

I was thinking this the other day Feek. I was on my bike and because it's now dark in the mornings I can see in people houses. I was amazed by the number of households that unnecessarily put their TVs on.. Empty rooms.

When my Mrs gets up, it TV on, kids screaming not even watching it. "Why is the TV on?", I ask. "It's a bit of background noise":dunno:

What also makes my laugh is the amount people are prepared to spend out on TVs. At the end of the day, a TV is only as good as the broadcasts which are quite frankly, crap! EastEnders>Corry?EastEnders>More Corry> aghhh

I game rather than TV and bedroom TV is used rarely.. Used only when really knackered or when downloaded fresh porn! ;)

In this house there are 7 tv's :o (one in the spare room doesnt get used, but works, just no one sleeps in there at the moment)

We all have one in our bedrooms (parents included) then theres one in each of the "lounges" (one for adults and one for kids) and then theres another in the kitchen. There are also 5 virgin boxes in this house (2 of which are V+)

We are quite a tv watching family, and we all like very different things, hence the amount of tv's. We will sometimes get together to all watch the same show (for example most of us are watching the new Stargate series) or soaps, but we all have different tastes.

My parents like watching Emmerdale, which I cant stand, so then I go and watch something else, my sister and her fiance are here some of the time (waiting to buy a house) and they like different things for example I will sometimes sit with him and watch football, which she hates, so then she ends up in another room watching something else. He also likes playing on his PS3, so that takes up a television meaning someone else needs to sit somewhere else if they want to watch tv.

When I lived in my flat I had 2 tv's, one in the lounge/bedroom, and another downstairs in the kitchen.

Daytime tv actually wakes me up in the morning, so I like putting it on.

Put it this way, we watch a lot of telly. :o

We have 3 TVs in our house, 1 of which is in the attic.

If the TV goes on in the mornings it's for the news. We don't actually watch a great amount of TV we tend to watch a lot of TV shows but we don't plan to watch them we see them in large chunks.

2 TVs. One in the living room, one in my room.

My TV watching has gone up a fair bit the past 18 months or so.
When I lived on my own, I hardly watched it. There only tends to be a few shows if at all that I'm fussed about missing. At the moment I can't actually name one that I'd be really disappointed to miss!

However, now I tend to watch it in the evenings with my Mum to be sociable. So I probably watch about 3hrs a night, albeit usually combined with the laptop, a book or the DS/PSP as I'm awful for sitting and concentrating on just one thing. While growing up, it was always the thing to watch TV in the evening, the whole family, so guess it's habit now.

I'd hate to go without books, games, radio (well Radio 4 is about it for me) and films, but not that fussed about TV.

Having said that, I do tend to put BBC News 24 on a fair bit when I'm busy working/writing. But I'm an obsessive news fan :D Can't stand going a day without catching up on lots of news online, on the radio and TV.

I know an awful lot of people who always have it on in the background, even when they've got guests which I find a bit irritating really! Don't mind if everyone's watching but when it's just background noise :/

There are 2 in my house. 1 in the lounge the other in my bedroom.

The one in the bedroom doesn't get used much, normally for a few minutes in the morning before getting ready for work and sometimes when I fancy watching TV in bed.

I don't watch that much TV, there are only a couple of things I will actively watch but if I'm at a loose end and Scrubs or Frasier are on then I'll happily sit and watch them.

I don't tend to use the TV as such for background noise, I'll usually use the radio but if I'm in the lounge then I'll have the radio on through the Sky box.

I've noticed this lately when cycling home too. Maybe we should leave a note: "I was looking through your windows when I noticed you'd left the TV on..."

5. 1 in my daughter's room, 1 in the boys room, 1 in the playroom, 1 in my room, 1 in the living room. Mine basically just gets used for watching films as does my daughter's. The play room one has a playstation rigged up to it, the one in the boys room has an x-box attached to it. The only one that actually gets used for tv is the one in the living room.

The only time I watch tv is when I sit down to eat by myself.

We have 5 TVs in our house, shared between 4 people. I'm the only one who ever seems to turn them off, so I'd hate to think how much it's costing my folks.

Maybe I should finish paying them for the flying and leave. The lack of rent and the sudden increase in bills would make them think!

I watch mine for a few hours a week, excluding the Xbox gaming time (although mine died this week). I think I've watched 2 hours worth of shows this week, maybe 3.

Just the 1 in the living room. When we lived in the flat we use to have one in the bedroom and one in the living room but when we bought the house we both agreed to keep the bedroom TV free.

I will sometimes put the TV on as background noise on one of the music channels but only when I'm in the house on my own; also when we've had nervous rats we've put it on even when no-one was in so they get use to different sorts of noises and don't jump or panic all the time.

It is rare that we watch a program at the time it is on - we usually record stuff and then watch it as and when.

Five, Six if you count the battery-powered one.

#1 is too old to be worth using but due to my hoarding ways and lack of transport I've never got around to taking it to the tip. Needs to go tbh.

#2 and #3 are CRT. Both work, I think. For same reason as #1 I haven't got around to getting rid. Needs to go on Freecycle/whatever.

#4 is the main TV in the lounge. Gets used occasionally.

#5 is the one in the bedroom. Gets used most.

#6 is the battery-powered TV I got for the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Not sure whether digital switchover happens in London before or after the Olympics, but if it's after I'll keep it until then. If not, may as well go as it'll be useless post-switchover.

However, the PC directly under #4 contains two TV tuner cards and is networked, so I almost always just stream live TV via that. If I'm sat at my desk I'll quite often have TV open in a window on that PC but whether I actually watch it or not is another matter (e.g. I sometimes put BBC News on and just listen to the audio).

2. Lounge and bedroom.

We watch TV over dinner, and then its normally background noise. Ill be on the PC all night faffing with photos or updating the website or something, Daz will have his xbox on. Bedroom TV will be on for about 30-45 minutes a night in bed, we'll either watch QI, or Mock The Week or Have I got News For You.

We've always said we dont watch much TV, there are no series in particular I am in to, and must watch on a weekly basis, and we hardly ever watch films.

One TV (admittedly a 50"), one Sky HD box.

Watch Sky Sports News, various Sports and occasionally films, sometimes will pop Dave on in the evening to catch Top Gear, QI etc but mainly use it for playing stuff through the HTPC.

4.

Living room, parents room, sisters room and mine. Though I only really use mine as a monitor, it is technically a TV and has an aerial feed for occasional PIP use. The others rarely get used. Sister sometimes watches a film on hers, parents have theirs on for an hour at night watching the news or something and the living room TV is only on for a couple of hours during the evening.

In the Princess Griff/Jingo household we only have the one tv! We are pretty good with switching it off not leaving it on standby, only using necessary lights etc...but I must admit when alone in the house I like to have the tv on when Im not in the room just so its not so quiet! Also I like to listen to the tv when Im in the bath etc!!

But how on earth do you have 7 tvs Knipps!?!?!?!

2 TVs, though I spose nowadays the pooter counts as a TV almost in its own right. We have one in the front room and one in the dining room, although that one pretty much only gets used if we're eating tea when the Simpsons is/are on.
The only programme I'll have on in the background is something like News 24, but usually we're either watching something or it's off.

There's 3 in Chateau Fay-Lom, one downstairs in the lounge which I might as well hard wire Cbeebies on (Oh and Eastenders/Corrie/Hollyoaks too), Sky+, Wii, Xbox360 and Bluray connected. There's one in the kids room which is currently not plugged in due to the Sky box being on the fritz and a 14" portable one with built in video player in mine and Loms room which the kids use when we're upstairs.

1 but there are 5 in my parents house.

Kitchen (where my mum lives), lounge - they are starting to use more as its the newest, loungediner old tv from lounge - we eat in here, mum and dads room and the spare (my) room.

Two! We have another couple of TV's - one which I won a few years back and another which was a hand me down. They're both teensy so have been replaced with our two current tvs.

But yeh - two working. One in the living room I'm using all the time as it's my poota screen as well and one in our bedroom which is only ever used for times we want to snuggle up in the warm duvet and watch a film (normally knowing we'll fall asleep at some point during it).

As for how much do I watch... if I like a series I might catch it (like Flashforward) but other than that it tends to be a film every other evening? If I'm bored some stand up comedy/simpsons or friends... might watch this whilst monching tea. People say dinner time is a time to talk about things and I don't get that.... because I'm eating my mouths full so I can't speak... but then if I do speak I can't eat and my food goes cold! So I prefer to be watching something whilst eating/listening to music :)

I guess a couple of hours a day would be the average over a week due to the amount of films I watch :)

Oooh. I watch lots of magic stuff now too. Does that count as watching tv? It's work/play for me!

16-10-2009, 15:08
I have 2. THe main one is usually on a music channel when I'm in as I miss the noise of people being in the house.
I have one in my bedroom which I bought in a fit of anger when I no longer wanted to be anywhere near the person I was living with in my flat. I watch movies on it in bed.

Same with Kari and I. 1 TV in the living room and that's it. Haven't got a VCR or DVR (though plan on getting the latter when funds permit). If we miss a show, we miss a show. Main things we have on at the moment are Glee and House, and I've taken to having American Football on if I'm around at the weekend so I can keep up with my Fantasy Football stuff. Oh and the odd bit of WWE Wrestling for a laugh. That's about it.

Both of us point blank refuse to have a TV in the bedrooms. It's not conducive to a good nights sleep.

Three here, one in the lounge, one in the kitchen (small black and white job) and one in Will's room. Probably watch the tv for an hour or so a night but quite often it is a series on DVD rather than what is on tv, I do have it on for background noise sometimes while cooking but it's not really being watched.

I've gone for months before without deliberately watching anything on tv, occasionally I'd switch on but usually realise that I'm missing nothing so switch off again. I'm more likely to watch a DVD than a tv show if I've got a decent amount of time.

Hmmm..

Playroom - technically 3, but only 1 is used as a TV.
60" Plasma with SkyHD and Bluray
17" Laptop - has a TV tuner, but is not really used as freeview signal is pants, has bluray though.
24" LCD - Secondary monitor for Laptop, has freeview built in too.

Lounge - 1 - 50" Plasma with SkyHD and Bluray
Bedroom - 1 - 42" Plasma with Sky+

Have a HTPC linked to the Playroom and Lounge screens and a modded Xbox in the bedroom.

Don't watch that much on TV - the other half does. Stuff like Bones, NCIS, Lie to Me... I'm mainly Top Gear, F1, A1GP - but mainly it's DVD's and Bluray though.

16-10-2009, 19:51
We have a single 20" CRT in the lounge.

It's not on all the time and is most often used when we (Mrs Dym) wants to watch something or when we use it as the output for my mediabox to watch something that has been aquired...

I also still don't 'get' breakfast TV. The last thing on my mind when I get up in the morning is to turn the television on.

1 TV techically but it's not licensed for free to air so we use it for alternative input, shall we say. Plus consoles and DVDs.

The reason why people find it so natural to have one on, is because it's the cornerstone of our entertainment. Particularly for the working class, or at least was. When TVs could be afforded by all, it's the prime source because, not everybody can afford to go out and pay for other entertainment, such as the cinema, theatre, stand-up and other performances, at least not any more than once a week anyway. Having the same level (minus the atmosphere) in your own living room, is quite obviously, fantastic and it's been in many generations now that a household should have a TV and it should be watched.

at home we've got two. a 32" (with sky+) in the lounge downstairs that my mum & dad watch. and then a 23" up here in mine and my brother's 'lounge' with a sky+ box, xbox & wii attached.

then i've got my 37" at uni which sits next to the 23" when i come home and links to the sky box also along with my PC & PS3
The most TV I watch though is downloaded episodes of US shows at iPlayer (mainly for BBC HD)

When I was at my parents house there were 5 tv's. Living room, kitchen, my bedroom, sister's bedroom and other sister's bedroom. Now I've got my own house there are 2. Living room and sisters bedroom, although neither are hooked up to an aerial as we don't have one and we don't have sky/cable. All the tv I watch I get from elsewhere. There is nothing on regular tv worth watching so the living room one is hooked up to a media pc and the xbox, hers is hooked up to another media although she very rarely uses it.

Just the one, right in the middle of my room so I can see it from kitchen, desk, bed etc. Usually on in the background if there's any repeats I like, otherwise it's regularly used for new shows and films. If there's nothing I like on then I have the radio on instead.

We've got 3.

One in the living room. It's hardly ever on. Maybe once every couple weeks when Tina and I snuggle up on the couch to watch Dirty Jobs or Deadliest Catch.

One in the bedroom. It's Tina's TV. Drives me bonkers. She grew up in LA with all the noises of a large city. From a very young age has always had one on for background noise since if it gets too quiet she can't sleep. I've got to admit it's funny sometimes the Nick at Nite shows she watches. Whereas I grew up basically in the middle of the forest. I need it to be deathly silent. Or a steady white noise level. So I have a small fan running on my side of the bed.

The third one is in Patrick's room. I think it's been on a grand total of 2 hours in the last year. He doesn't watch much TV. He'd much rather write some music on his computer.

Any shows I want to watch I generally download them. No commercials and I can put them on pause if I get a road side assistance call in the middle. So I guess you could possibly count my laptop as a fourth?

2. One in the lounge and one in the bedroom.

Although there is a third in the study with a PS2 hooked up to it and a large monitor which can be used for watching streamed or downloaded shows.
So maybe it's 4.

The wife tends to put the bedroom one on in the background and channel hop - usually with her laptop or DS on aswell and if there's mothing on she has every episode of Buffy and Angel on VHS!

it's the opposite for me. I have tinnitus and some nights it's impossible for me to get to sleep without background noise. I do try but sometimes I have to flick the tv on low. For some reason it's easier to tune out what's actually happening than it is on radio, while keeping the noise constant. I have to laugh at people who claim to watch no 'tv' yet are glued to iplayer/downloaded shows on another form of hardware. It's still TV!

Two, one in the lounge and one in my bedroom. I do sometimes watch the bedroom one but it's more used at the weekend on low to drown out background noise so I can sleep (living on the High Street can be a little noisy in the wee hours when the pubs kick out). I don't really watch that much TV. A couple hours a week maybe.

In fact a guy came round from MORI to do a survey asking how much TV I watched and what I watched. He then asked if I wouldn't mind contibuting further if needed. Then told me with how much TV I watched they wouldn't be contacting me :p

Have you tried a pillow speaker? I use one for audiobooks when the other half is asleep and I can't be bothered to use my headphones. A couple of friends have tinnitus and they push white noise through it and it apparently helps.

I went along to an install with an AT&T guy when they launched in Chicago (uVerse for Darrin) and he installed a total of 8 STBs in the house to cover the 8 TVs.

In my last house we had more TVs than we had rooms (7 room and 8 TVs) though only a couple of them were used on a regular basis. Now I only have one TV in the living room though I often watch TV (iPlayer and downloads) on my laptop or the PC in my office.

Judging how much I watch is rather tricky but it's anything from 20-50 hours a week.

As Kate said, we have one TV which is hooked up the home cinema/XBOX/NTL.

We don't watch a huge amount of telly really...... Recently started watching Flashforward and True Blood, both of which we like. Then there are the odd cooking programmes, Kate quite likes Masterchef.
Strictly Come Dancing and sometimes Casualty at the weekend.

Don't watch any sport other than the F1.

No morning/breakfast TV, TV never goes on until the evening if at all.

We might get another TV for upstairs so that Kate can watch cooking stuff when I'm playing the XBOX.

We got 3

40" Samsung in the lounge that is used for general day to day viewing, PS3, Xbox & Wii

26" Samsung in Conservatory that I use as my PC monitor. Never used it as a TV yet.

32" in bedroom that we have never used yet.

As for viewing habbits, very rarely do we get time to sit down together and watch stuff together apart from a film at weekend. A lot of our stuff is recorded to watch at a later date.

We only have two, a 42" LCD in the living room used for Sky/Xbox 360/Playstation/Wii. We've got a 21" CRT in the bedroom which we use occasionally for movies but that's it. We tend to flick between a few TV channels at night but mainly use the 360 to stream TV programs and films from the PC upstairs instead.

2 TVs with Freeview and we watch way too much TV. Probably like 2 hrs or more a day which is a complete waste of my life and I am to address that. I'm always intrigued by people who watch no TV and actually go out and do stuff instead. I guess it's the trade-off that going out and doing stuff costs money while sitting in watching TV costs no more than the TV licence and a bit of electricity. Being a miser usually means I'll go for the cheaper option :D

We've also got a knackered one in the spare room that we need to throw out and an old black and white that she is sentimental about, so despite the fact that it's partially melted and useless at the same time... we'll never get rid of the thing :(

Oh, and they're all CRT's. One was free, dumped in the front garden, one was given to us, one was a present and god knows where the b&w came from.

We have three TV's here for two people. One in each bedroom and one in the lounge. I don't think that is too bad to be honest :) What I think it worse is that there are 3 computers for 2 people :p

Hmmm watching TV wise, I have the tv on most of the time when I am home, mostly because I don't like silence, I switch from watching it and doing things on the web. My mom watches about 2 to 3 hours an evening.

One TV here, in the living room.

As I work evenings, I don't watch much during the week, but we have a few bits on record over the week which is usually watched on a Friday evening.

Phil has started just putting it on of an evening because the chinchillas like it.

The only time I'll have it as background noise is when we are eating in there, as I hate ambient silence when eating!!

I have one in my bedroom which is used mainly on saturday and sunday morning for half an hour or so, or by Sam when I'm working on the computer.

We have our main tv in the lounge which is used for an hour or so in the evening.

There's a teeeeeeny (8 inch?) CRT/Radio tv thing in the kitchen which I have on at the crack of sparrows to watch the news.

So my bedroom tv gets about an hours use all week.
Main lounge gets about 10hrs a week or so, maybe a bit more if we watch a DVD.
The teeeeny TV about 2hrs in the morning.

The TV in my bedroom is a bit pointless, but strangely I feel I'd miss it if I didn't have it :o

If I had a TV in my bedroom I would spend all my life in there I think :p

But there is no aerial, no room to put one and no tv, so am kinda glad I don't have one there - hard enough to get out of bed in the morning tbh!

;D

It's weird though, even though I seldom use the tv in my room I reckon I'd miss not having one ::/: :o

the titchy analogue one in the kitchen will soon cease to function anyway. :(

Hmmmm...

Good point...

We have 5 computers for 2 people :o

My main PC (Phoenix)
Media Centre (Fledgeling)
Netbook (MicroChick)
Work laptop (piece of crap :p)
Mrs Dym's iBook (Mrs Dym's iBook)

Our laptops and the media centre get the most use at the moment, although I'm working from home tomorrow so will spend most of the day using Phoenix and the work lappy...
