Don't know why they didn't knock the green eyesore down last time. Says 8 fire engines but when I went down there (didn't know anything about it, just wanted my hair cut!) there was 5. Building has been empty for years and a while back an annexe was burnt out and eventually demolished.

Springfield road is mullered because victoria road is shut for anyone heading that way.

Details/Images
Incident No: 24621
Date: 17-10-2009
Time: 01:28
Details: Derelict warehouse alight
Address: Victoria Road, Chelmsford
Attendance: 2 x Chelmsford, 1 x Ingatestone, 1 x Baddow, 1 x Brentwood, 1 x Witham, 1 x Colchester ALP, 1 x Harlow ALP
Firefighters are tackling a blaze in a three storey derelict warehouse. The fire originated in the third floor of the building but has now broken through the roof. Crews are wearing breathing apparatus and using two monitors and one main jet to tackle the fire.

Update 04:00hrs - Crews are planning to evacuate 12 nearby homes.

Update 04:50hrs - The officer in charge reports that the roof of the building is 100% alight. Crews are still fighting the fire using two monitors and one main jet with both ALPs in use.

Thirty people have been evacuated from 10 homes nearby.

Update 08:45hrs - A four pump relief has taken over at this incident. The roof has been totally destroyed and the water board has been called in to deal with a burst water main. Crews have requested building control fearing that the walls of the warehouse could collapse. Two monitors are being used to fight the fire.

Well it looks like they will have to knock it down this time.

Two monitors are being used to fight the fire.
I can understand monitors being used to fight an intruder - especially the old CRTs, but monitors to fight a fire?? hmmm Good luck with that!

Maybe they mean they've strapped hoses to the back of monitor lizards and sent them in? ;)

Indeed Matt, apparently the building is listed (why????) so maybe that's why the thing hasn't gone already.

Apparently there's a burned out car round the back - the place is used as a car park (I wanted to park there this morning!) and people often leave their cars there overnight after a night on the town. Think someone might have a suprise when they go to collect!

The scorched white patch is where the last fire was in an annexe that has recently been demolished. The houses to the right are the ones evacuated.

I didn't catch on on the way past, but realised when I went to post that we'd both had the same thought. ;D

That was my first thought too ;D

I imagine it looks slightly better in a smutty kind of way and am sure it would indeed be improved in a horizontal way.

Feek it's opposite the Riverside Inn, slightly up from the swimming pool/ice rink.

I had the same problem as Feek, but know where you mean. I can see why they had to evacuate homes.
