It's a beautiful place to visit and I would highly recommend it, Jordan has an impressive history, the first photos are of Petra which is an ancient Nabatean city carved into the sandstone and dates from pre-Roman to Byzantine times. After Petra are some shots of the desert castles which are early Islamic. The amphitheatre is at Jerash which is an amazing place, I thought it was just another stop on the tourist train but it is a stunning example of Roman and post Roman cities and so well preserved! Lastly is the Dead Sea with just a couple of shots of the salt deposits and one or two from our glass bottom boat trip :)

Oh my lordy. You have just added another place for me to visit to a very long list.
Beautiful. Absolutely stunning!

These shots are pretty much straight out of the camera and need a few tweaks to get the best out of them, but I wanted to show you guys how nice the place is :)

Petra is gorgeous, never been to the Middle East (I don't really think of Turkey and Cyprus as truly Middle Eastern like some people do) so Jordan is one I'd like to do.

Its well worth it, I wasn't really interested in many of the middle eastern countries for a holiday but Jordan caught our eye, based on what I've heard I'd really like to visit Syria too but not yet we have a lot of other places to go first :)
I've got an album going up on photobucket if anyone wants to see more, will post a link shortly.

That's incredible. How far in from the cliff face does it go?

Not as far as you might expect ;)

The builders were all about the façade! Its about 40ft deep and pretty plain inside, apparently it was the treasury of the city, most of the other places are pretty shallow too, I presume because of the heat they were outside a lot of the time using the cool caves just in the full blaze of the sun and at night.

Amazing shots Mat, glad you both had a good time.
Did the camera meter the shot down the gorge to the first sight of the Treasury or did you have to do it manually btw? Cos the exposure looks spot on!
I noticed that large square rock on the ground with the writing carved into it - it's very similar to another piece of rock that I know of, similar size and possibly the same script, that is part of the wall in one of the Queen of Sheba's old frankincense shipping ports on the south Omani coast near the Yemeni border. At the time I saw it (1981) it was still untranslated, I'll see if I can dig out the 35mm that my mother took of it and get a shot of it for comparison.
As Pheebs said, Jordan is one of those places that's on the itinerary when I win the Lottery!
