View Full Version : Drinks - what's good for you?
I'm not a big tea/ coffee person but do enjoy a green, nettle or peppermint tea. However I never find warm drinks particularly thirst quenching or refreshing, and drink more cold drinks than hot.
I know fizzy drinks should be moderated, and do stick to diet versions, but I'm drinking far too much Pepsi Max at the mo to be good for anyone and really need a cold drink that's not bad for you.
Squash bores me, and I was under the impression that it has most of the bad stuff of fizzy drinkies anyway.
Am I condemned to tap water?
I rather like good ol' water... but you can make it more interesting by squeezing a lime/lemon in it.

Stick to Pepsi Max :) The finest drink known to man, apart from Mountain Dew which really isn't good for you.
My family all drink this flavoured water stuff - not squash really, it's all sort of weird flavours like Elderflower or whatever. Might be worth a try tho.

Irn-Bru nuff said ;D
seriously though are you sure there is no cordial out there that you'd like? Vimto no good? :p
Juice? We drink a lot of it. 4 cartons for £3 at Asda all different flavours - I <3 Fruits of the Forest.

We drink (mostly) diet fizzy coke and orangeade in our house. The odd carton of orange and apple juice here or there. Fizzy Vimto as a treat :D Daz drinks a lot of water and squash.
I drink squash at work, Cherries and Berries from Tesco is gorgeous! Their flavoured water is lovely too. Water on its own bores me as well, Id rather go without!
I should drink more water :( but I agree with DD it is bloody boring!

We get through a lot of squash at my house, usually Cherries & Berries, Summer Fruits or Orange, Lemon & Pineapple (all Tesco).
I find that water tastes quite different at different temperatures. Warm/tepid water is foul, room temperature is OK and chilled water is my favourite. The tap water at my house is OK but I use a Brita filter that lives in the fridge so get nicely filtered and cold water.
I rarely have fizzy drinks in (though I say that and currently have 2 bottles in the fridge but they've been there for about 4 weeks unopened). My favourite drink is coffee (no real surprise there).
Water rocks :D It's the only drink that ever refreshes me. Fizzy drinks just feel too sugary for me as I rarely drink them now.

I drink a hell of a lot more water than I used to and I feel a lot better for it, at home if its not wine in my glass its invariably water, cordials are just going to add sugar, diet cordials are just going to add chemicals.

That's how I feel at the mo Matt, but I just can't see me just drinking water :/ Plus Norfolk water is HORRIBLE!!!
Yeah water quality does make a big difference. I'm fortunate that the water quality here is really good :) Although I know in Stafford I switched to weak squash because the tap water was pretty average.
Amazing how quickly your body adjusts to drinking water though!
I don't know if it will help but one very odd thing I've noticed... if I have water in a glass I tend to just get through that glass very slowly. If it's in a squirty bottle though I galumph it and then need more!
No idea why! I like squash stuff! Don't really like fizzy drinks although enjoy a good fake gin and tonic by just having sugar free tonic and a squish of lemon!
Milk is good for you too! I try and have a glass a day! And if I can afford it I will always try and have a glass of freshly squuuuuueeeeeeeezzed orange juice :D
I drink about 2-3L of water daily, love the stuff! :o
We've had a bottle of coke in our house for weeks now (it came free with our monthly take away) - I don't think anyone's going to drink it - anybody want a bottle a coke?
I quite like the sugar free cordials you can buy - I think robinsons are the blue capped ones which have no added sugar. But I dilute it looooads so a bottle of squash lasts several months for me. :)

Check the sugar content. They are often loaded with the stuff and a glass can be 25-30% of your daily sugar intake.

Yup, thats why we dont have it often, it shocked me the amount of sugar in them!
Yeah I'm not impressed by the sugar/ calories in juice.
I have a juicer so perhaps I should make my own :)
Water and Orange Juice :)
edit AND SAILOR JERRY'S! :D ... oh wait...

I'm a bit of a tart when it comes to hot drinks - I'll drink pretty much anything. I'll have tea with milk in the morning and then, through the day, I'll have coffee, herbal tea and normal tea. I quite like fennel tea and nettle tea.
As far as cold drinks go, I usually drink water. Like Will, I use a Brita filter as I'm not all that keen on all the crap they put in the water and I'll occasionally squeeze some limes into it to liven it up a bit. I very very rarely drink fizzy drinks. If I fancy a change, I'll have some grapefruit juice (the proper squeezed stuff, not the stuff made from concentrate).
I'm going to turn orange one day due to all the irn-bru I drink. But it's just so tasty!
During the day at work I stick to water - usually 2-3 litres. I have something like orange juice (nfc) or milk for breakfast and in the evenings it can be anything from beer/wine to diet lemonade/coke. I take a bottle of water to bed with me too.
I sometimes get banana flavoured milk or there is a berry "sports" milk drink I found in tesco (I am under no illusion that it is healthy just because its "sports" but it is very tasty :p )

Damn!
Juice is much better for you than Juice Drink though.

I thought the 4 for £3 at Asda was Juice Drink (hence the high added sugar content)?
You often find that from concentrate juice has higher sugar/additives than the nfc juices
Cool water is so much nicer than water out the tap temperature water. Not Davidoff mind, that's way too flavoured for my palate, and expensive.
I'm like Will. I've got a bottle of Coke and a can of Sprite in the fridge but it's unlikely to get used.
Get a grip folks. Drink water if you're thirsty. Keep your teeth and think about all those chemicals you're not consuming. Diet Coke and Pepsi does rot teeth for the record and artificial sweetener isn't exactly good for you.

It bloody better not be! Otherwise there will be another complaint letter coming for false advertising!
Which reminds me....

Currently hooked on Robinsons (or anyone's tbh) Blackcurrant & Apple No Added Sugar. Prefer it quite strong though but I'm odd like that. I'll happily drink the local tap water too but prefer to add some flavour.
Normally drink Pepsi Max with the evening meal though.
Failing that Irn Bru (always win!) and if I need a boost I'll foolishly hot the Monster :D
Don't know what to suggest really Vix. I find those flavoured water too strong and a bit weird tasting.
Fruit juice has a lot of sugar in it, be fresh or made from concentrate. I buy 1 carton of Tropicana or any other freshly squeezed with bits OJ a week and drink a small glass every morning with breaky.
I adore full sugar Ribena, but it's so bad for you that I limit myself to 1 glass a day. I've currently run out. I also have some lime cordial, but don't drink much of that. Can't stand fizzy drinks though. I've never liked them. I don't like the taste of low sugar cordials either.
Other than that, it's generally water. I do actually like water, but it has to be cold. I have a pint glass on my desk at work which I use for water and I'll have the odd cup of Decaff Earl Grey too. I love proper lattes, but I don't work somewhere that has a Costa Coffee in the building anymore, so I don't have them any more :( I started cafetiere sharing with a bloke, but he drinks SO much coffee that my head would be spinning by the end of the day so I decided to stop.
Yorkshire Tea.
also; water, espresso coffees & whatever flavour of tesco squash I happen to have (currently 2x double concentrate Summer Fruits).

Yeah quite a bit of sugar in any juice. I tend to drink from concentrate stuff as its cheaper and better for the environment (according to the pack of the carton!)
Damn you all. I used to get by just fine drinking water. Now I need to go and buy Ribena. Why did you have to mention Ribena? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
Water! Weak squash if doing an endurance run or teaching a spin class (drink your weak lemon drink now!)
Pure fruit juice if having a protein shake - small amount as don't like drinking sugar! I do not like artificial sweeteners at all and would rather sugar in small amounts than fill my system with that stuff.

This. In work I keep a bit bottle of the Robinson's cordial and drink several big glasses worth a day. In the evenings it'll be Pepsi Max or some other diet type fizzy drink. I know it's not the healthiest option but I love the taste and that's enough for me.
Sorry Jonny :p
(drink your weak lemon drink now!)
DRINK IT!!! Tee hee :D
We usually stick to Tesco's own double strength cordials. They're really nice, especially the lime one, and we make them up from a bottle of cold water out of the fridge. I do the same at work and have a 2 litre bottle of ready made cordial sitting in the fridge that I top up my glass from.
Thanks to everyone who recommended the Tesco cordials. I do like them, they don't taste as chemical/ sweetened as Robinsons.
