What size Dee? Is it the edt or edp, edt is usually cheaper. I'll see how much I can get them for if you'd like.

Heh, i get a low wage in Nov due to the fact I don't have my day job at the mo. Fortunately I get the biggest pay packet of my life at the end of Dec, so it'll all be going on the CC this year.

Last Xmas I hadn't worked for 6 months so we had quite a frugal Xmas. Parents for some reason still think this is the case this year, despite me having 2 jobs until recently. So all I can get out of them is 'we want a clock for the caravan'. Seriously, like all I'm going to buy them is a clock :/

I have successfully bargained with Mr Wyatt to make sure that I can have my Christmas tree up a whole week earlier this year \o/

Paula's probably your best bet re: perfume, she bought a whole load of stuff with me and when she put staff discount and stuff into it, it ended up costing about a fiver ::/: Either that or she's got some kinda mind control going on there :D

I like Christmas, but more for the time off and nommy fud than anything else. I don't like the decorations going up too early. 14 days before and 14 days after for me, but I can understand and tolerate it when people put them up in early December. When I was walking to work this morning I noticed someone had a tree and decorations up in their window already. It's the 4th November for pity's sake, I wanted to smack them upside the head for being so ridiculous.

I'm not ready for Christmas to be upon us yet as it's only November, but I did buy Good Food this week which has loads of gorgeous Christmas recipes in it. Yum! :D I usually cook the whole family (8 of us) a meal on Christmas Eve round our house. Not going to be happening this year though because the lounge will be in a state of even more chaos than usual. I'm still cooking it though, but it'll be at Mum's. Might do it the weekend before because cooking a 3 course meal for 8 after working all day isn't my idea of fun really.

Anyway our tree usually goes up during the 1st/2nd week of December, or whenever my parents take the trip to Cannock Chase to fetch it. It makes the whole room smell of pine, which I love. It will come down before Twelfth Night.

I've not even thought about presents yet *sticks fingers in ears* LALALALALALALA :p

Currys may have a few if they're closer, but the purple lot will have a better selection. They're both owned by the same company.

PS - Treat any product advice you may get with caution. Some sales guys know what they're talking about, many more sadly don't.

Jingo
05-11-2009, 15:56
I'd second Mark's comment; PC world may have a good selection and could be easier for your family if they do need to return etc... but do a bit of internet research beforehand, know what's out there, the costs and most importantly - whether it is capable of what you want it for.

I wouldn't rely on the salespeople's opinions on things, or you could easily find yourself parting with more notes, for features that you won't use/need. :)

Oh yes, Christmas is on it's way. I have now made 5 christmas cards :) Mostly with the new things I bought at the craft show in the NEC :) I have been bad though and bought some more stamps. BUT they will make AWESOME Christmas cards! I am a sucker for crafting stuff :)

Mark
16-11-2009, 23:21
I doubt I could do craft stuff to save my life (I struggle even to cut a straight line), so I cheated and bought a big box of ready-made 'craft style' cards several years ago when they were new. Now everyone seems to sell them. :(

I know - they're probably made in a sweatshop in China or somesuch - but they were unusual at the time.

Nice job with the cards!

Attended the town's Christmas light switch on tonight - I've been here 20 years and it was my first one. Really don't know why I bothered. The 'mayor' said something incomprehensible, then something else incomprehensible, then we did the countdown thing and the lights came on, and finally we had all of two, maybe three, verses from carols, and then some random rock-type concert thing started (at which point I left).

Still, the lights are on, so it's Christmas! :)

I just watched the 1984 Two Ronnies Christmas Special. Brilliant. Still have three others to watch, and the entire Morecambe and Wise Xmas Specials too. :)

Edit: "I cooked the goose... and I goosed the cook." :D Genius.

:)

Ingredients:
1 large brambly apple. Peeled, cored and grated
100g sultanas
200g Raisins
200g Mixed fruit
100g dried cranberries
100g mixed candid peel
100g glacéed cherrys diced
50g pecans diced
250ml run
100ml brandy
100ml calvados
1 orange zest + juice from 2 oranges
1 lemon zest and juice
2tsp mixed spice
1/2tsp ground ginger
1/2tsp ground cloves
1/2sp grated nutmeg
200g muscovado or dark brown sugar
100g suet.

1) mix all ingredients together except 150ml of the rum, calvados, brandy and the suet.
2) heat over a low heat for 30mins or until mos of the liquid has been absorbed.
3) allow to cool fully. Mix in the rest and sit aside for a few weeks. Alternatively bottle and keep for months. Check and stir occasionally adding more booze if it starts to dry out.

I made some mincepies on Sunday (see facebook for pics) - bloody gorgeous they were too.

I'm not sending cards (I never do) seems like a waste of paper and whilst it's nice to receive a card, I'd rather send a text or drop a call and wish them well to let the people know I'm thinking of them, than waste trees, money and postage. Unless you make them, which does make them more personal - but it's too much effort and I don't have time to do such things.

Won't be getting a tree or decorations myself, but my parents no doubt will bring the tree in from the garden (we keep it planted throughout the year and then bring it in for Christmas, then plant it again). It depends whether they can be bothered or not. Won't really phase me either way.

I'll start looking on't internet for gifts in a week or so, but seeing as I have no free days until Christmas day it'll have to be lastminute.com in terms of purchasing. I'm short of cash this month (had to pay back my court fees to the company) so I'm going to have to limit myself to a fairly tight budget unlike last year where I spent far too much! :p

Can't think of anything original for my 'rents, but my sis has told me what she wants as she's not able to locate it (sheet music for the piano) and there's nothing I can't find so at least that'll make her happy.

not feeling particularly Christmassy though as we're making 6 people redundant before Christmas which is pretty ****ty - and I'm starting to feel under a lot of pressure. But I'm trying to keep my chin up and look forward to the 1st week off for Christmas I've had for 8 years so that'll be nice - only going to be the 4 of us, and I'll miss being in France - but maybe 2 days with just the 4 of us will be nice. I will pop into work on Christmas day to have a cuppa with the chaps working though. :)

I'm finding it really hard to feel relaxed and happy despite it supposedly being a happy time of the year. Still I'll probably celebrate the Orthodox Christmas (6th Jan) - it's always a lovely atmosphere in the church for the Epiphany it never fails to make me feel a bit more "alive" I guess.

Sorry for the blurb. I thought I'd contribute to the thread nonetheless.

Mum & Dad brought our Christmas tree over from Cannock Chase yesterday. He's sitting in a bucket of water smelling lovely at the moment. Will probably put him up next weekend because the lounge needs tidying first.

No presents bought as yet and no idea what to get anyone. I only get pressies for the family though, so it won't be a massive rush... apart from Dad's bday which is next weekend. Dads are hard enough to buy for at the best of times, but birthday and Christmas so close together is a nightmare!!

Still can't think of any presents for my dad or sis.
Anyone bought a house and if so is there anything you would universally need? Sis just moved into her own place.

We move into our new hobbit hole on Saturday, the first chance I get I am getting my tree from here:

Christmas Forest
The Christmas Forest is one of the best ethical ways to buy your tree for the festive season as every one that is bought sees another tree planted in Burkina Faso. All trees come from sustainable sources and most are farmed in the UK to mimimise tree miles. Available at six sites across London, you can get a beautiful tree and support the Tree Aid charity at the same time.

Trees are available from 1st December - 24th December 2009 at these venues:

Pools on the Park, Richmond, TW9 2SF
Putney Leisure Centre, Putney, SW15 1BL
The Alwyne Pub, Islington, N1 2LY
St Pauls Church, Stoke Newington, N16 7UE
St John's Church, Kensal Green, W10 4AA
Ealing Common, Ealing, W5 3HN

Have come to the same conclusion myself, as per usual. I've lived here 16 years and have never been at home on Christmas Day.

Besides, it requires tidying the living room, and there are higher priorities than that right now.

I've done all my Christmas shopping! I'm now broke, but at least it's sorted - my god it's busy, recession? What recession? I saw people spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds - madness. From the figures I have at work and just from being there, from crossing the road to go to the tube I must have passed 500ks worth of people's shopping around me! One of the persons in the queue in front of me spent close to £700!! ::/:

No Christmas cards or decorations or tree, but then again I don't have kids and I'm going to spend it with my folks and then hopefully away on holiday (BA strikes allowing!).

Not feeling particularly Christmassy, but then again it's full steam ahead at work so it's not a surprise.

Glad everyone is happy and getting into the festive spirit - goodness knows we need some smiles in these dark times! :)

Im really looking forward to the 23rd, every year me n my folks go to my Grans house which really is in the middle of nowhere countryside and we all go to this tiny old school rooms where the old headmaster takes a carol service. Its not a religious one, but it does have a big bbq pit fire outside and we all stand around it singing all the classics whilst an old lady in a bonnet plays a squeeze box and an old man plays a tamborine!
Then we go inside and have free hot mince pies and mulled cider and then sing all the more mainstream classics like frosty the snowman, rudolph, white christmas etc!

Its amazing! and I always feel so Xmassy!

As long as it only snows when I don't want to go out, then it's fine with me. Chances of that happening? Zero. :)

PS - No decs or cards here either. Not in the mood. There's a turkey in the freezer already though (unexpected delivery). It's too big for me so the parents are coming to pick it - and me - up.

And there are 3 new additions this year - they have lil flashing red lights at the bottom (which get rather annoying after about 5 minutes - catching glimpses out the corner of your eye):

Well despite having a ****ty day ahead at work, I'm feeling much more positive and Christmassy. Down to Dr S's parents house in Lymington for carols and claret which will be fun. Then 4 more days of hellish work and then 10 days off  1st Christmas off in years cannot WAIT! :D Oh and it's snowing and it's gorgeous - wooohooo! :D

I LOVE those earrings! They are fantastic. I have even tried to look for them on the net and have failed! Bah! Reindeer earrings are the only ones I love and I have never been able to find a nice pair.

I will be posting pics of my christmas decorations at home soon :)

Work Christmas Party went BRILLIANTLY (the person who organised it did a grand ****ing job ;)) lol.

We had this bandaoke: http://www.lmmuk.com/band/One+Night+Standeoke

Who were FANTASTIC!!! Lovely lovely guys, my CEO kicked their stand though so all the songword booklets were made out of order so they had to cut their 2nd set short.... shocking behaviour.

I 'sung' Sex on Fire and Time is running out... brilliant - felt like a proper rockstar! :D

Also had this: http://www.rentabooth.co.uk/entrance.htm

which was brilliant fun :) I think everyone enjoyed themselves... well will see on Monday!

I won a hamper too - funnily enough the one I put together ;) and no the draw wasn't fixed!

Got to my hotel at 4.30am! Not done that in a looooong time!

Yes lots of water drinking now!

News just in. Tree is up. Decorations at about 85%. Topping off ceremony scheduled for later. Our tree comes complete with a rainbow and basically anything that sticks on it. Cat already enjoying eating it all.

Been playing Christmas music on the tele all morning. Tree sorted, stairs lights/decs sorted. Just need to finish tidying/hoovering the lounge and then I can move on to finishing the wrapping and making some mince pies :D

making some mince pies :D

Went out shopping for some cutters so I could do this ... nowhere sells them :( all we found were some "shaped" ones but we couldn't even work out what the shapes were meant to be. Never thought getting plain round cutters would be so hard :/
