View Full Version : Diesel on the road

Does anyone know who I need to speak to about a diesel spillage?

In Hungerford, on a roundabout next to a petrol station, the road is pretty much caked in the stuff. The only reason I know this is that I slid across the road, allowing me plenty of time to smell/feel the stuff up close.

By the way, if someone finds the end of my finger, I'll happily pay P&P for it.

Edit: Sorry for the typo in the title, typing is proving fun.

Highways Agency? Local Council? Non-emergency number for police?

Thanks, I've hit the police first as I've had many bad experiences with the other 2.

I've spoken to someone here at work, they skidded on that bit of road in a fancy Audi. If R2D2 can't stop a car skidding, what chance do I have...

I'd ring Old Bill & pat yourself on the back for saving Numerous Bikers from feeling the tarmac.
I hate derv drivers... O wait. :o

I Never over fill mine though & used to ride myself, Just another reason I reckon Every single person should have to do a Year on a bike Before they can drive a car.

I agree completely. One of the cyclists arriving at the roundabout before me was lucky enough to have the wind blowing in the right direction, he smelt it and managed to stop in time. As I'm 'just' a cyclist, it wasn't too bad (aside from a shorter finger and a mashed leg). I'd hate to see a biker come off.

I have no idea how so much of that sh1t can end up on a roundabout without anyone noticing (or caring).

Without pointing the finger (< LIE) It's "usually" a lorry that has just filled with an unsecure filler cap, They bang them right to the top on fill up & the first roundabout gets rid of the excess. :(

Looks like it's oil, rather than diesel, as I can't smell it on my cycling gear. It's amazing how far it spread, they've put sand/grit/dust down on just about every road.

I am really not looking forward to cycling home...

Nasty, you stick the little one on the same bike then?

Just found out it was hydraulic fluid from a bin lorry. Nice!

Bit late now thanks to me actually doing work today but...

Yeah, I've just realised I have the Streetcare number on my mobile phone. You won't believe how many punctures I've had on the same section of road.

hehe! Cool! Kids bike seats have moved on so far, I remember the cheap plastic ones that dangled over the back wheel.

I don't think they are illegal, I think shops just believe they are dangerous. The benefits of balance being overruled by the ability of the child to disrupt the rider.

I think they are much better though, as you can tell the kid is still with you. When the unfortunate day comes, and I have a kid, I'm buying them a trike and 20 feet of rope.

Yeah, I've been asked to ride someone on a Tandem to their wedding, I'm borrowing it soon, along with a person to make the weight the same.

Are the tag-alone bikes the ones that fit to the rear seat post?

I'm impressed! You'd want to avoid puddles though, the kids would get soaked!

How about this the.... tandem tag a long!

I'm getting one of them and then stick it on the back of a tandem proper and then get a bike trailer for Ella off the back!

Make sure the seat on the trailer points backwards and mount a nerf machine gone on it. You can then make sure no-one overtakes you. Simple!

A 2 year old tail gunner? Love it!!

Aah, the good old Raleigh Activator!

I had one of those, the earlier version with front 'suspension' only and the frame made of old cast iron drainpipes! I know exactly what you mean about the weight ;D

I totally agree with you about the additional weight and where it is - and being able to see the little one.
I was given a 'crossbar' many years ago - passenger sitting crosswise on crossbar, one hand holding lightly to the stem and the other resting on my lap. With legs out to one side and torso counterbalancing to the other you stay away from the riders knees and minimally affect their ability to steer and corner, I was impressed with how practical a solution it was (compared to the alternatives.)

If you need Nerf equipment, I can oblige. Have a couple of Nerf guns sitting here doing nowt (bought from a US Geek site when they were in fashion).

These are the kind of activities we all should put our kids through.

It'd cost a fortune in nerf darts though! Plus does a small child know not to target the police? :D

This needs to happen, my kids would be lethal with Nerf!

I wouldn't give them away, you might need them one day when you spy a bike with a tail gunner.

Ah yes, sorry, I forgot to specify the age in which tail gunners are at their very best. :D

I am concerned my kids can read this forum, they were shooting cars out the back window of ours yesterday. Ella makes an awesome "Pew-Pew" gun noise!

I reckon Every single person should have to do a Year on a bike Before they can drive a car.

It's completely impractical, but you're right that it would create much better road users.
