View Full Version : 360 : Xbox 360 -> Netgear router -> XP

Folks,

I'm currently tearing my hair out, trying to get my xbox and PC to talk to each other. My Xbox doesn't show in media sharing, and it can't see my PC.

As far as I can tell, my netgear router has the port forwarding set correctly. Both machines can access the internet fine. Firewall has been disabled (as a test), with no luck.

I'm at a loss, and networking really isn't my think.

What does the network test on the console say about things?

Funnily enough none of my PCs reported anything media sharing related until I kicked the media sharing off (from the console), and now they all do it.

I did download some media sharing software on one of the PCs though. Don't know if that had anything to do with anything.

Network connection is fine. The PC connection part of the test lasts about 1/10th of a second, and just says "PC: Failed".

What a pain in the bum. I used to have a direct link between my Xbox and PC, and that worked fine.

Are there any guides on the MS site?

I've found their guides for other networking issues to be very comprehensive and easy to follow, might be something about getting media sharing with a 360 to work.

Goose

Tried the guides, no luck.

Turn off any port forwarding you've done for this, it doesn't affect internal traffic. Can you ping the xbox from the pc?

Mark
21-11-2009, 10:21
What Daz says - port forwarding only affects Xbox Live, so you'll lose that when you do turn off port forwarding, but for the test it's worth doing.

You got uPNP turned on on the router?

Goose
21-11-2009, 13:10
uPNP is on, and I can't ping zee Xbox.

Daz
21-11-2009, 13:36
Then there's a connectivity issue. Post the ip addresses and masks of the 360 and pc please :)

Goose
21-11-2009, 13:50
Sure thing.

Zee PC:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Zee Xbox:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Those look fine and as they should be. Suggests something on the router isn't configured as it should be (DMZ, firewall, etc.)

If it came to it, I don't mind popping round with a laptop for a bit of port probing (providing you're somewhere near a bus stop, that is). :)

You sure there isn't another PC previously connected that needs removing from the 360 first?

Mark
21-11-2009, 15:45
Oh yes - as it's been previously connected, that might well be it. Good catch.

Daz
21-11-2009, 15:49
The ping is a red herring - it no longer responds to ICMP (just checked mine - it definitely used to).

Try:

telnet 192.168.1.2 1025
From the PC - you'll either get connected or connection refused/timed out.

Goose
21-11-2009, 18:29
telnet 192.168.1.2 1025
Connecting To 192.168.1.2...Could not open connection to the host, on port 1025:
Connect failed
I wouldn't worry about it too much, I'm off to Denmark for 2 weeks tomorrow morning. It'd just be nice to have this working when I get in. :o

Edit: No other PC.

Mark
21-11-2009, 18:40
There's something odd with your router config. I just can't put my finger on what.

My offer stands, when you get back from Denmark, obviously. :)

Goose
21-11-2009, 19:00
I could switch on Remote Management...

Mark
21-11-2009, 20:11
I'm game. :)

If you need my IP address, or want to send passwords, let me know. :)

Goose
21-11-2009, 20:30
Nah, I'm too lazy/careless to worry about specifying IP addresses. I'm PM'd you the details, thanks Mark. I shall get on with my packing!

Mark
21-11-2009, 20:46
OK, then, here's my suggestions. I don't want to make changes from here in case I bust something.

Change the password! Seriously! :)
Remove all of the port forwarding rules. By all accounts, your Xbox shouldn't be connecting at all. Either that or you got the IP addresses the wrong way around. :)
After removing all port forwarding rules, try again.

Goose
21-11-2009, 20:49
Yes Mum.... :p

Port forwarding was added by me, following a 'guide' off the web. Will do.

Mark
21-11-2009, 20:56
;D

There's good reason for point #1. There have been various exploits posted that enable remote access to routers with no/default passwords.

Goose
21-11-2009, 20:59
I know. I'm just one of those 'lazy developers who writes very secure code but just wants to relax at home' types. :D

Settings removed, no luck. Hmmm!

Mark
21-11-2009, 21:12
Odd. The router seemed to be indicating there were three devices connected. Any idea what's on 192.168.1.3?

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:15
Yeap, my Xbox.

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:18
This is the same feeling as when someone is going through my underwear drawer... :o

Desmo
21-11-2009, 21:34
Just without the smell ;D

Mark
21-11-2009, 21:36
Yeap, my Xbox.

B.B.But you said the Xbox was 192.168.1.2

Oh, and I'm not going through anything. I quit before posting my first diagnosis and assuming you've changed the password already, you're safe. :)

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:38
Yeah, there was a slight power failure (i.e. I might have come home a little tipsy after the rugby, and pulled the plug on some items, hence the slight shuffle).

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:39
Just without the smell ;D
No smell, it's empty. I'm wearing the '09 pair and haven't purchased the '10 pair. :p

Mark
21-11-2009, 21:45

LOL! Try the telnet command from above again, but using the new IP address. Just in case. :)

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:48
Already tried, my good man. First thing I did.

Mark
21-11-2009, 21:56
Odd. Very odd in fact. DMZ was clear, firewall was off, etc. I couldn't see anything obvious other than the port forwarding and the fact the router seemed to think you had three devices plugged in.

Goose
21-11-2009, 21:59
So, you can see why I'm baffled now. I do have 3 devices, my iPod is listed too. It's normally spared from the drunken-unplugging.

Daz
21-11-2009, 22:00
Might just be my xbox with that port open for whatever reason. Is yours on the network Mark? If it is you could nmap it :) (you'll need -PN though)

Mark
21-11-2009, 22:03
I'd have to reroute a few cables to put mine back on the LAN (I borrowed the Xbox cable for another PC).

How about going after the port Xbox Live uses (3074) instead?

Daz
21-11-2009, 22:11
I only had one reachable:

daz$ nmap -PN xbox

Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2009-11-21 21:10 GMT
Interesting ports on 172.17.0.36:
Not shown: 999 filtered ports

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 31.73 seconds

Mark

I was wrong - just needed to swap a cable over...

icebox ~ # nmap -PN 192.168.1.96

Starting Nmap 4.76 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2009-11-21 21:16 GMT

When trying to network share files from console and PC, be it Xbox360 or PS3, I just install WinAMP Orb. Works every time on every network I've ever done it on.

Goose
23-11-2009, 12:28
I shall give it a go. :)

Mark
23-11-2009, 12:30
Also turn off UPnP and see if that helps. Might be the router doing something dumb. Xbox can be made to work just fine without it (that's what I do).

Goose
23-11-2009, 16:06
Will do. Give me, um, 2 weeks.

Goose

Home at last. ;D

Works a treat, thank you very much!
