(sorry in advance!)

Ok so I have now been able to purchase my new laptop, and am in the process of setting it up.

Windows 7 so far looks very s****y, its asking me about windows easy transfer so I can get favourites and music etc off the old laptop onto the new one, has anyone used this before?

Also my first n00b question is about I tunes. I have a very old ipod which is completely full and as a result my itunes holds more songs than I have on my ipod because my ipod just can't take anymore. How do I transfer all of my i-tunes over to the new computer when they aren't all on the ipod?

Also I have a 30 day free trial of McAfee, but am just gonna scrap that and get my usual avast on the new one, yes?

More questions will come i'm sure. :o

Edit. why wont it let me type Sw anky?

Your old library on your old laptop, does it have all the music that is on your ipod? Or do you have a mix of stuff on the iPod which isn't in the iTunes library?

Everything on the old laptop i tunes is everything I want to copy. I haven't ever registered with itunes though if that makes a difference.

No need to be sorry. Ask away. :)

No, but it's supposed to be decent. As long as you keep stuff within 'My Documents' etc. it should pick up all your files and settings. Give it a shot if that's what you want to do.

What leo said. I've never transferred a library before but I believe it's possible. Once you've done the transfer, don't forget to de-authorize iTunes on the old laptop if you intend to wipe it (it's a fairly obvious menu option IIRC).

Edit - since you never registered you probably don't need to worry about de-authorizing anyway.

Also I have a 30 day free trial of McAfee, but am just gonna scrap that and get my usual avast on the new one, yes?

Good plan. :)

what you'll need to do is copy the library over and edit the library xml file to use the new location :) but it's a simple find/replace :)

And how do I do that? :)

as you don't have an external HD caddy I think you'll need to share the folders on the old machine and access them on the new one :)

editing the file we'll do later :)

I do have an external HD from Father Christmas last year, can I just bung it all on there, then install itunes and bung it on the new machine?

Mark

Yes you can.

If you put it in the same place on the new machine, you might not even need to do any editing, but I don't know for sure about that as I don't know what editing is needed.

So I need to download itunes and then whack it all on the HD and go from there?

How you planning on copying it across?

Get everything in the itunes file (if I have one) and copy it to the external HD, and then plug that in the new laptop and copy it. Or does that not work?

Have the new one up and running now, am typing this from there! :D

copying would work yes but if you want to do save the headaches just copy everything in the iTunes/Music folder into your new iTunes library on your new machine :)

Having my first issue, found something I want to get off my newsgroup, so have installed DAP which is what I used to use, but when I click on the item in my newsgroup to download it it says that part of the DAP is missing and I need to reinstall it.

Happy to learn another way to borrow things but want to still use my newsgroup and the DAP always did it quickest compared with torrents.

For my newsgroup access I use Alt.Binz but am not sure what DAP is :/

Leave the pop up on. It's a useful security feature and once you have installed everything, you will really see it.

I would transfer stuff manually by setting up a network. Assuming you have a router connect both up and then right click on teh xp folders and allow share mode. You should then be able to see them on your new laptop under network.
Then just copy them across.

As for security just get the new microsoft one, it's very good indeed http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/support.aspx?mkt=en-us

Right. Try this for DAP.

Completely close down your browser (close all windows and wait a few seconds), then open DAP's main window. Click the Tools menu, and then click Options. Select Advanced, and then select your browser from the list of integration options.

See if that helps.

PS - for everyone else - looks like DAP is an HTTP/HTTPS download accelerator. If necessary, you can continue to download stuff simply by disabling it and using your normal web browser download. I didn't use any special software to download from Easynews and it worked just fine. It's possible it might not be quite as quick, but as I've never used an accelerator, I can't comment about that.

Ta.

Ok have borrowed a film, for people that do this regularly how do you get it up on the tv, my parents have a pretty new flatscreen jobby, what do I need to do. I thought I read somewhere windows 7 lets you do this but I cant find where/how?

Mark

A VGA cable between the TV and laptop is usually the easiest way, but if the laptop has DVI or HDMI outputs then try those.

You tube is being silly. I have songs playing in the background sometimes whilst im doing stuff, but you tube either isnt loading the song at all (as in the little red bar doesnt go up) or the red bar goes up for some of it (like a minutes worth of song) and then it just stops and says "waiting for You tube"

Am I likely to be missing a plug in or something?

I usually try and search for the official videos to play if that makes any difference.

I've had that several times, along with the little spinning thing appearing constantly over the video. Think it's got something to do with bandwidth (not sure if that's mine or theirs), but don't know much more than that.

Make sure you're up-to-date with Adobe Flash and if you're using wi-fi, make sure you've got decent signal.
