View Full Version : What's your prescription?

I'm pretty sure I need glasses and I'm getting my eyes tested on Saturday. I think I'm long sighted, I don't get headaches when looking at a computer screen for a long time but if I relax my eyes I can make the text go blurry.

I've had my eyes tested in the past and the first time both eyes were less than 1. The optometrist basically said I could get glasses if I wanted to but it wasn't really necessary, so I didn't bother. I can't remember what it was the second time, maybe one eye was 1.25 and the other slightly less. Anyway, the optometrist didn't even discuss whether glasses were necessary and palmed me off to a salesperson. So I'm wondering what's the minimum prescription that glasses will be of noticable help? I'm sure its a personal thing but at the same time I don't want to fork out £100+ for some glasses that are of little use.

Daz is similar to you, for me to wear his glasses, they seem very weak, almost like they are just made of plastic :D But he said when he has them on, they make the world of difference.

Would you consider contact lenses instead? I cant live without mine now.

Its not that I don't want to wear glasses, in fact it might be quite cool to get some mega geeky ones. I just don't want to spend money on something that's not going to be of use to me.

I think you'll be surprised just how much difference they make, if you dont fancy spending a few £££, then use your prescription on Glasses Direct, I know Leon sings their praises :)

I'm becoming blind as a bat now ;D

Left is -2.50 and right has just changed to -3.00. I'm still wearing -2.75 in my right eye and I can tell that it needs a little extra help. End of this month and I can go on to my new stronger lenses :)

I'm around -6.5 to -7 in each eye, I can't remember the exact figure but it's not far off those. Add an almighty astigmatism as well.

I first started wearing glasses/lenses when I was -1.00 in my right eye and -0.75 in my left. I found they made a massive difference.. things suddenly had edges ;D

Thanks, I didn't realise such a low prescription could make such a difference! My sister started wearing glasses a while ago and admitted they were partly cosmetic which made me think there should be a practical limit. I let my eyes relax for 5 minutes this afternoon whilst looking at my screen and it messed me up trying to focus again afterwards! I got some vouchers with my work eye test but I'll compare prices online. Thanks!

I was -2.25 and -1.75. Whilst not a dramatic bit of myopia, it was a pain and definitely needed glasses to live my life normally, couldn't survive or function without them as I love detail and hate not being able to recognise faces or read things that I see. Made my life so much easier wearing glasses - purely to be able to see normally! Fortunately I now have 20/10 vision which is still hard to get used to!

-5.5 right and -6 left

Can't see a thing without contacts and the only place it bothers me is when swimming and when I want to learn how to dive. Its the reason why I haven't been jet skiing too :( booo!

Which reminds me I want to ask you tomorrow Will how that all went!

Happy to tell you about it. :)

It's crippling not being able to see sharply, even Piggy's prescription would leave me irritated and I know EXACTLY what you mean Piggy, being able to see edge etc... makes such a huge difference - it's hard to describe but it makes life so much easier.

-3 in both eyes, been stable at that since I was a teenager - I only realised I was short sighted when I started secondary school and couldn't read the blackboard. Before that I just assumed everybody saw the world in blur-o-vision :D

I'm very heavy handed with glasses, always have been, knocking them whilst drunk/damaging them crawling under cars/falling asleep wearing them - so I begrudge paying a fortune for them.
I've used a few online places - optical4less, Selectspecs, Glasses Direct, Goggles4u, all very good and most have various offers on at various times of year.
I perhaps wouldn't use them as a first time purchase though, as you need to try some frames on to see what suits you, but once you know what styles and sizes do and don't fit you it's ideal.

These semi rimless ones I bought last week were £13 I think? Plastic arms too which is ideal for me as bare metals often give me a slight skin reaction on my face.

And yes I am drunk and fellating a hot dog on Wenceslas Square :o

I think the glasses I wear are around -1.5 but I need to get retested and something a little stronger.

So I'm slightly long sighted, +0.75 and +1.00. I also have Astigmatism (0.5 and 1.00 I think). Apparently because I need them solely for working on the computer my company will pay towards them, anyone know how much? From what I've read its about £30-50.

Will

That's pretty mild astigmatism - but when long sighted and working on computers it does compound the problem. I think wearing specs for the computer will help you lots. :)

Different companies have different policies, I think ours pays up to £50 or something like that... I can't find the policy at the moment.

Ours pays fifty quid, plus twenty five for the eyetest.

My prescription is around this and it makes one hell of a difference when I put my glasses on. The best way I could describe it is applying unsharp mask to everything in Photoshop. Road signs become pin sharp (I have trouble reading them), I can see so much better in poor light and leaves on trees are all separated and amazing :D When people with a stronger prescription try them on they don't notice any difference though :p
