View Full Version : Please vote for me!
pingg.com is having a competition for iconic photos of San Francisco and one of my images was chosen as a finalist!!! Please vote for mine (#2, Melissa Crain) with the Alamo Square skyline in front and the city in the back at night. If I win I get a point and shoot camera... but most of all bragging rights for being an award-winning photographer ;D;D;D;D
Thanks BD!!! :lubu:

I have voted for you but have to say John Flemming's picture is very beautiful :)

You've got some stiff competition there, some of them are pretty good. Yours is also very good and a bit different from most which appeals so I've voted. :)
Yeah John Flemming has a good one - but they're all of the Golden Gate Bridge, and I knew most of them would be, which was why I entered something different. Most people have seen the view from that spot during the day but I got one at night which is different but still iconic SF. Until a few days ago I lived a block away from that spot too!
I don't normally vote for these but I really like your picture. It almost looks like a row of model houses, there's just something about it I really like :)

Those are known as the painted ladies - a famous group of victorian houses built in the 1880s (old for around here!) all painted different colors across from a park on a hill.
House no 2 could've put their attic room light on for you - ya know even it out a bit ;)
Hee hee... have voted ya! GL :)
BB x
I don't do the vote for me threads either... but I'm happy to do yours. For me the golden gate is just too overdone. I liked your picture and Arin Fishkin's best, but yours edged it for me with the old and new SF. Good luck :)
Thanks guys :-) I know you probably cringed when you saw the word "vote" in the thread title haha
Nope. I refuse. Cheater :p
Whenever someone says San Fransisco, all I can think of is either The Golden Gate Bridge, or those houses and since every picture I see of SF is of the bridge I would have voted yours anyway :)

Always have to be the biggest ass in the bunch, huh Will? :p

I clicked on the link with the intent on voting for my favourite piccy as I normally do. You got my click :) though I wish they'd put higher res versions up as they barely take up a 1/4 of my screen making it a bit tricky to judge :(
Some very odd choices there (on the part of the editors, not you), and hey, everyone does the Golden Gate Bridge - so much so that it gets boring after a while. So I voted for yours. ;D
Looks like you've got stiff competition from John Flemming though.
Love the photo :)
We drove up from LA to SF and we came in this way I'm sure (is that right?). Those houses are great, would love to have had some time to hit the bars round there and meet some locals :)
Out of interest, Mel do you know 'the most unpretentious bar in San Francisco'? I know the very fact they advertised this automatically disqualifies them from the next years award (lol), but it was a good bar, they had a blackboard where you could buy drinks and put them up there for when they came in...epically vague but if you know it \o/
I have not heard of it... I hit mostly the dive bars only the locals know about ;-) There's a few great places.
The houses aren't really in a place that you drive by going to or from anyway, you need to be going directly to them in order to see them. tbh I didn't even know where they were until I moved next to them!
:) Yeah we got lost as hell coming in to SF, is why it might have looked familiar, haha!
I think it's called 'Daves Bar', not far from Union Square but walkable - one of the girls we were meeting there said it was decent - they served a not-bad Guiness on tap - can't complain :D
There's this great bar called Toranado's in lower Haight that has about 100 beers on tap. Freakin' fantastic.

Voted, I managed to find them randomly while walking about on my way back from Japan town IIRC? I think the mad dojo is around there as well. Did you take that from the hill in the park opposite?

voted. There are some good pictures there. John Flemming's looks to false for my liking.

Yeah right up on the hill there. I was walking home one night and the skyline was crystal clear so I decided to grab the tripod and head up to the park. Usually it's foggy but that night it was so beautiful.

Damn nice shot btw :) Any chance of a 1600x1200 version for wallpaper?

Why are 90% of SF shots of the Golden Gate Bridge?! Lacks originality tbh! :(

I did the same. I also picked yours as I genuinely thought it was the best image. I quite liked the pillow fight picture by Gene Kosoy but would have preferred a wider shot.
Good luck :)

and your photo actually is my favourite. I love the line of contrast between old and new, its like two different places - really nice. fantastic photo ;D
Most of the others are of 'the bridge' which is boring.

Got through and voted - finally. And yes I genuinely think yours is the best of the lot.
I also like Chris Gulker's - reminds me a little of a Gillée or a Canaletto - and Greg Lato's.
And I can't see why Arin Fishkin has got such a share of the vote - the framing and composition of that shot just don't do anything for me.
And tyvm for the wallpaper hun, it's in place now and looks superb on a 22" monitor :)
Hey guys - I didn't win (I think I ended up in 4th or 5th), but my photo is still going to be included in the San Francisco Designer Series, from what I understand there will be e-cards and crap. They asked for a short bio for some reason so I don't know what they're going to do with that. Free marketing as I see it. :)

Well done, pity you didn't win but that's still a good result. :)
