Hey all!!

Just wanted to write this as I'm soooooo excited :D

Met up with the Retail Ops director for Blacks on Friday and he wants me to lead some head office projects for 3 months from January, possibly leading to more if they go well! He said I'd be ideal as I have experience with competitors and also because of "fantastic" ideas I have suggested and implemented over the last 6 months..

YyYaaAaAAaAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Well done Blighter!

You have posted before showing your passion at work and your keen interest to progress so it shows the hard work pays off - just keep it up now and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Don't forget to enjoy it somewhere along the line too! ;D

Thank you all for your kind words - I'm in a conundrum now!!! A girl @ head office I've been working with via email has just sent me
this:

Anyway, I know there will be a job opening soon in the Internet team in our department, E-commerce. I think it would be a really good way in for you and I would most definitely second you as I have been very vocal about your potential and how you are wasted in store.
*
Just wondered if you would consider it, working in Head Office and travelling to Northampton? It is something I can find out more about for you if you are but I thought before I go gathering info I would see if you were really up for it. I think once you are in the scope for where you want to go and what you want to do is really good; after all, the online marketing team I am part will probably expand in the next year or two if you wanted to write content and guides like I have or expand the site.
*
Let me know what you think and we’ll take it from there.

ahhhh what do I do?!

I have no idea what sort of route I want to go down - retail operations or e-commerce!?

I think I'm going to try and go for the e-commerce option as, if I do get it, then it's a more permanent role and I'd have to move into my own place/flat share as if far too far to commute to from home. Hmm! Have been so happy today =D

does anyone here have any experience or views in retail ops or e-commerce? :)

WOOO! :P

The last two weeks I have been doing a competitor focus project with a town manager from another area, and we presented our findings and suggestions for combat to the directors today... they liked it so much they've asked us to plan a brand new concept Blacks store and it's up to us how it's laid out, where it will be, what brands will be stocked, staff training.. everything basically!!

*giggidy* I love work xD

competitor focus project
Why is it that BLG are having such a poor time closing stores and such when other outdoor retailers (GOoutdoors (http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/), S+R (http://www.snowandrock.com/), Cotswold (www.cotswoldoutdoor.com)) are expanding?

Getting into markets that are niche at best (I'm looking at you, O'Neills) really didn't do them any favours. I mean how many people actually want boardwear in this country anyway? Hardly surprising that they closed those.

Other stores, they do seem to want to expand, and I guess a share issue is as good a way to get the money to do that as any.

Mind you, they're in my bad books now. I need a folding chair and they didn't have any that were any use. I'll have to go to, heaven forbid, Argos. :)

Boardwear was a very poor step.

As with store closures......

About 6 years ago Blacks was probably in the top 5 strongest retailers in the country... never had to borrow any money, etc. Then we got a new CEO who thought it would be a good idea to spend all of our money on store openings and refits etc. He got kicked out by the share holders, and now we have Neil Gillis who is sort of like the Blacks messiah ;D

The stores that were closed were ones with extremely high rent, and low turnover. The company are going to reopen up in similar locations to where the closure stores were, but in lower rent locations.

Mind you, they're in my bad books now. I need a folding chair and they didn't have any that were any use. I'll have to go to, heaven forbid, Argos.

As with the camping chairs - that will change as part of this project (my idea!) - we're going to have a stock of "essential" camping gear all year round in the larger stores, and make it available from the warehouse for smaller stores for either store pick up or free home delivery (3-5 days).... hows that sound? :)

It'll have to do. ;D

To their credit, they did have a few in stock (apparently, I couldn't find them). However, the specific problem in my case is that it has to fit in a suitcase. Tripod stool seems like the best bet if it'll take my weight. Only need it one day so don't care if it gets wrecked. :)

what brands will be stocked
Could you steer them in the direction of some decent British brands like Rab, Montane, and Mountain Equipment?

Blighter

Rab won't trade with us :p But ME is the option of choice at the moment ;)

Blighter
13-02-2010, 12:52
Yep, probably rent a room to start with til I can save for a deposit. Some nice rooms going for £400 all in... And right next door to the office!!
Next time I want a new job Ill ask SINC to move to Northampton.. Whenever he moves to the same town as me I get a new job!! :D

Buddies (http://www.buddiesrestaurants.com/buddiesoriginal/buddies_original_about) is well worth a visit. It isn't cheap but for a treat it's great.

Whereabouts in Northampton are you living?

Blighter
08-03-2010, 00:12
Living in a little estate next to Swan Valley (5 minute walk from the office ;D)
