View Full Version : New Toy
Bit of a 'Look at me with my shiny new laptop' post but meh I don't get many shiny new toys so it's nice to do :D
My new laptop arrived today and although I haven't had a huge amount of time to mess around with it yet, I'm rather happy :D
Had my Dell Vostro 1500 for just under 2 years now and with an increasing number of PC review games coming my way, it was starting to really show its age. Especially as it had a rather meagre Geforce 8400m, and my HD regularly kept hitting less than 5gb spare :eek:
Saved up and purchased a Dell Studio 1555. Core2Duo T6600 2.2ghz, 4gb RAM, 500gb HD and Ati 4570HD. Windows Experience Index is now a much healthier 5.0 compared to 3.x something or other with the old one.
Laptop's about 2kg lighter and much thinner, and it should hopefully last me a fair old while.
Just about to give DiRT2 a whirl as that was incredibly slow to load with the old laptop. Also got Football Manager 2010 which will be good fun :D
Also quite glad to see an HDMI port which could come in handy!
I do have one brief question. Any noticeable-to-an-average person difference with having Windows 7 64bit rather than 32bit? I assume it's just down to architecture and optimisation more than anything, but figured I might as well ask while I'm behind on technology. :)

Nice laptops those.
As for x32 vs x64. You've got 4gb of ram in it - use x64. It'll use all of it rather than only 3.something in x32
x64 is already installed so that's all fine :)
Couple of photos taken. First time I've used the good camera in ages so apologises :p

Shiny, shiny lid! Already with a couple of fingerprints on it though :o

Spot the random videos (!) in the background!
Thinking it'll make a nice laptop to hook up to the tv from time to time and watch some things too :) Especially as I've got plenty of HD room for things now!
Only downside I've found is the keys are a bit clicky, but then again the DVD drive is much quieter so swings and roundabouts.
Jen that desktop image is BRILLIANT! :D I know I'm going off on a tangent somewhat but does anybody remember that game?- Co-op Brilliance! :D ;D

Was a fantastic game at the time :) Makes for an excellent desktop background too :D

Isn't that one of the wallpapers done by Gabe from Penny Arcade a few months back? One of a series of classic games painted?
I remember him posting them but can't find the links (their news feed doesn't have a search feature either) any chance you can furnish us with some?
Nope, it's this guy: http://orioto.deviantart.com/ and http://abduzeedo.com/videogame-remakes-orioto

Hmm.. those are the ones. Maybe it was just that Penny Arcade pointed to them then ;D Cheers!

No, not really. 64-bit will address more memory, so under the right circumstances (4GB+ RAM) it will be better than 32-bit. Seeing as you have 4GB of RAM, you'll get the full 4GB rather than 3.xGB, but in a blind test I doubt very much anyone could tell ~500MB difference in RAM.
It's more futureproof though, 64-bit applications will slowly become standard so having a system capable of taking advantage of that is a benefit in itself.
Cool :) Futureproof is good in my book :D
64 > 32
Got to be better :p
daz$ python

He's right you know.
He's right you know.
So tempting to try and go all programming golf on you..
Thought I'd get some verification of my own:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;
if ( 64 > 32 ){
print "We're living in the future!\n";
}else{
print "Old School for life!\n";
}
Resulted in:
$ ./64bit.pl
We're living in the future!
Taking it Bash style..
$ if [ 64 > 32 ]; then echo "We're living in the future"; else echo "Old School for life"; fi
We're living in the future
Proof positive.
Succinct python!:
$python -c 'print 64 > 32'
True
Succinct ruby!:
$ruby -e 'print 64 > 32'
true
Hmm, that one probably wasn't worth it :p
$ python -c "if not 64 > 32: print 'OMG\! WE DIES'"
$
Safe. Phew.
(bang escaped for bash, not for python :p)
We could try and be ridiculously verbose but I'm leaving work early to go see a comedian :D

Have people been taking something today?? :p
php -r 'echo (64>32)?"To infinity, and beyond!":"LOLcode rulez!";'
My only bother with going 64-bit is that I use some old software. It's all 32-bit but that doesn't necessarily mean much.
Have people been taking something today?? :p
It's worse than that, we're geeks Jim!
Stinks of nerd in here. :p
