There was almost no snow left on the ground when I left home this morning but when we took off from Luton airport there were miles and miles of snow covered fields.

Here in Holland there is still quite a lot of snow on the ground.

Starting to fall again. very lightly at the moment. ( 9 clock is expected to turn to snow and by midnight heavy snow)

worked last night although a waste of time couldn't do anything. Supervisor is from wales and has already said he's not coming in he's already had about 10cm. Meant to take the track at 12:40am if the weather forecast is right I doubt we will take it. Which sucks

I've spent 3 and 3/4 hours sat stationary in my car listening to people call in to the radio station upset at being stuck for "2 hours". I've only jsut got in from work in Torquay. Torquay = no snow. Home in Exeter = no snow. So I dont even get the satisfaction of expecting a snow day tomorrow after my 4.5 hour drive home. Infact, I gotta stay late tomorrow to big up A level Physics and IB Physics.

Justice in the world? Very little.

Pretty much clear here now. Main roads are fine, coast is fine, roads are icy around here though and the pavement outside is like a slick ice-rink! Been lightly raining on and off all day though so if it keeps it up the rest should quite soon rather than having a face to freeze :)

It was raining when I went to bed but looks like we had about an inch overnight and it was still trying to snow on my way to work. This has made the ice easier to walk on and and de-iced sections a slushy frozen mess.

I still love snow :p

We've got another 2" on top of the stuff from last week so about half a foot again of snow topped compacted ice. Coming down heavy, although according to national weather report, it's only snowing in the SW moving to NE. Bizzaro. All the snowmen (well, icemen) still here in full glory! 10 days must be a record around here!

Got stood up by my lift this morning

Still not really a problem except at the end of my road I went sideways ..... I might have dabbed the throttle a little. A chap at the bus stop had a huge grin and gave a thumbs up as I held it down the road.

Getting a bit fed up of being on my knees to the car though. Still it didn't settle today and its meant to hit 5 or so at the end of the week so that should kill it off nicely.

Muban
14-01-2010, 18:04
Well we haven't had any snow for ages now, forecast for sleet/snow today and tonight but haven't seen anything of that yet. It's just not getting warm enough for a proper thaw though. Most roads and main pavements are completely clear, but car parks and side road pavements are still a nightmare, fields and grass are still completely white. My main problem is getting in and out of my car park (both in the car and on foot!) to the road. It's a solid layer of ice a couple of (uneven) inches thick with a thin layer of water on top when it thaws during the day before icing over at night:

My estate actually seems to be thawing out thanks to the temperature being around 4C today, had to drive through a shed load of fog this morning though. Was quite weird as the fields seemed to have a wall built on them so you couldn't see anything, half expected to be attacked by something at some point.

It's cleared a helluva lot in Liverpool today after a full day of snow yesterday, so was quite pleased, however then arrived home to find it *exactly* the same as it has been for the last 10-12 days. Why is it not moving? Arrghh!! The pavement is just so bloody slippy and absoultely solid.

Wossi
15-01-2010, 10:00
Most of the snow/slush has gone now, apart from my car park at home and the rain is coming down hard so should clear the last of the works car park up a bit. People still can't drive though, why the moron in front of me this morning thought 40 in a 60 zone on a clear road was clever I'll never know.

Kitten

No snow here. Thank God. There were a few flakes about yesterday but mixed in with rain so it didn't stay.

Having to get taxis everywhere for two weeks wasn't my idea of fun. I don't do snow - I tend to go slip sliding away at the first sign of it. One day I tried to walk to the shops from the office and got about 10 feet before I gave up. I ended up pulling the head off a broom and using the handle as a ski pole. It worked (or at least placebo worked). :D

When I went out in it last night I realised it's actually about 5" thick here but down at my parents it's around 7" deep. Don't think we've had more since but it's so cold it's not melting yet either. Very icy out and very cold.

Glad I decided to drive last night though - mate of mine got stuck in toen for 2 hours trying to get a taxi and in the end had to get someone to go pick her up

I'm still getting backlash from those 2 days off!

Can anyone find me a site that will show the official amount of snow call in both Portsmouth and Newcastle please? :(

Goose
01-02-2010, 17:27
If I get this wrong, I'm giving my meteorology qualifications back. :)

I very much doubt you'll find anything from the Met Office. They charge for data like this, and it's horrendous to calculate at a local level. A lot of snow measurements are actually records as precipitation, so that ruins the numbers. The type of snow, temperature, wind speed and humidity also need to be taken into account too, as each will change how much snow we get, in different areas. It's not as simple as sticking a ruler in the snow and writing the depth down. :)

If there is any site that says the depth/amount, I'd be questioning the accuracy.

Goose
01-02-2010, 17:45
You'd probably want to see if any local rags have any numbers then. I can search the Newbury Weekly News website for old articles and found "40 centimetres in places", and Newbury isn't as big or mighty as your places.

Yep it took over an hour and a half last night to get into manc. Every way in was stationary, m56, m60, m62, m6 and even the back roads! They were saying on the radio that essentially manc has had it last night :(

I'm waiting till after the rush hour before I leave my flat, I really cba with the prats. One of which was my manager last night, who thought that dumping the clutch would get the car moving on sheet ice. Eventually I had to help them as they were too thick to help themselves. 2nd gear, gently raising the clutch... pulled away first time. You'd think after the 3-4week freeze they would have a clue by now.

Bah, more snow, lots of it!

There was a blizzard over by the office this morning followed by some rain which cleared it. I heard reports that it was quite bad where I live so I left the office early. The first 70% or so of the journey was fine - no snow at all.

The remaining 30%? Horrid, absolutely horrid. It took me about 90 minutes to do the last 6 miles. I lost count of the cars I saw going sideways or otherwise out of control. I had a near miss, very close near miss when a car going in the opposite direction slowed and the car behind braked too hard, locked up and drifted sideways towards me. Had it not been for the turning to my left I would have had an Astra buried in the offside of my car.

Bah.

None here, it was blinking wet this morning though.

Even my waterproof gloves that have only leaked once (in 80mph wind and driving rain) got a little damp in places.

Am really hoping nothing settles!

we've not had any rain yet, so it's kinda sticking.
