View Full Version : Time for a change - mobile
I've had an iPhone fir as long as they've been around and I'm bored! Is there anything else good out there? I'm due an upgrade, this phone is driving me NUTS, only receiving texts when they're pushed through by another one.
I haven't kept up with the latest gizmos and gadgets so I've no idea what's out there!
Cheers oh mighty BD!!
iphone is the only phone worth having. Nexus One looks good, but its still no iphone.
hang about (i know it'll be nearly an impossible option) till the new iphone will surely appear in the summer.

Blackberry 9700 Bold might be worth having a look at if you really fancy a change.

HD2 :D
Slaps the iPhone into touch :D
A Blackberry isn't an alternative to an iPhone, I use both (I've been through a few different BB models) and the Blackberry is good for one thing - email, and that's it.

They do work rather well as phones too :p. It also has an application store for things like Twitter, but they're a bit more expensive than those from the Apple App Store.
Blackberry's work very well as phone and texting/e-mail devices, you know, the things phones really need to be good at. The iPhone adds a lot of unnecessary extras that we're being fooled into thinking are needed now.

Way-hey, double post after my Internet went down \o/.

Can't advise which to get but I can advise not to get the Nokia 5800. Its resistive screen makes it a pain in the lower hemisphere and I'm stuck with the damn thing. Capacitive screens for the win if touch screens is the way your going.

My 5800 is a heap of crap and i'm stuck with it til June. o2 are at the moment refusing to replace it despite all the issues I have had with it.
(and yes I am on version 31)
Got a Pre on 14 day approval......gonna take some getting used to!

This. In summary it's touch screen for being the sake of touch screen IMO. I sold it and went back to my old 6300

The alarm goes off when it feels like, and not for the time I set it to go off, meaning I can't rely on it.
The internet crashes at least 20 times a day (thats not me exaggerating) where it goes from the page I am on, back to the home screen, trust me it gets very annoying.
I was unable to send text messages for a week due to a bug it apparently had, which was fixed when I took it in a shop and they did a factory restore, this meant I lost lots of bits I had saved on the phone (text messages, and notes etc - kept everything on the memory card, but still annoying nonetheless)
It freezes where the only thing I can do to unfreeze it is take the battery off and restart the phone.
It randomly disconnects phone calls when I am in the middle of them, and its nothing to do with signal strength.
It has this annoying thing where when I put a new word into the predictive dictionary, when I then go back to keep typing it adds on the last suggestion of what I was trying to type before I added it, meaning I have to delete it before I can carry on (minor thing but trust me it gets annoying)
And the last one is the battery can go from half gone to where its telling me its run out completely in a matter of minutes, even though I haven't used the phone a lot between it going down to half gone.
.......And breathe! :)

Right now I think the Hero is the only real iPhone rival, with the Motorola Droid a close second. The Nexus phone looks like it's going to be good, but whether a smartphone is "good" or not depends on the customer and their requirements/expectations.

we both ended up getting crap phones then.. I'm stuck with mine till 2011 I'm assuming june time as well, as we got them at roughly the same time :(.
I keep looking at getting a 2nd hand phone of the bay. But all the good phones are so expensive.
what ever you do avoid all LG phones. They are pants.
Just been playing with my friends HD2 today.Obviously an HTC winmob phone, so menus & stuff v similar to my diamond's.Now considering this over an iphone... all depends how much it would cost to upgrade & if I can.BB x

The HD2 is £400 on an upgrade on T mobile, if you're an 18 month contract customer.
£400 for an upgrade!!!!
Ouch.
Have you tried out the HTC Hero?
My friend is on O2 and he got it for free, but it looks like its only available for Orange Business users :(
Jammy git!
I liked the look of it because it is winmob and is similar as to how I currently use my diamond.
I didn't think the Hero was winmob and isn't it the one that has a curved bottom?

mmm, I had a lovely long post typed out then ****ing OSX crashed (whoever said that Macs just work :().
In short I never used web, mail or GPS on my Nokia as they were ****e and so unpleasant to use that I just didn't bother which made the touch screen pointless. Since moving to a Hero I use them all on a regular basis because they work and are usable day to day rather than just in an emergency.
My Nokia was on Orange btw and would regularly refuse to boot up. Apparently TADTS

Can you tell me what this Kinetic scrolling jobby means?
Anyone got any ideas on a phone for ~150 ish of the bay. Touch screen, internet 3g, camera, apps.
GPs navigation would be a bonus. any of the Samsungs worth having? maybeOmnia (SGH-i900)??
I cancelled my data tariff when I had the N95, surfing, anything other than texting/speaking was just too bloody painful. I got the HTC Touch HD and it was almost as bad and the texting was a million times worse. Now I've got the iphone I'm using it all the time, and I have survived for a whole fortnight without access to a laptop/pc at all and more importantly...without feeling it at all! It's amazing what a difference having easily accessible, well working web apps and connections makes!
yeah the surfing on my arena is painful. went on a mates iphone and nokia n9x and both of them were blisteringly fast.

I've got a Diamond Touch, and you'll find any of the lastest smartphones (3GS/HD2/Hero/Nexus etc) to be better in every way.

Thanks Lozza, now I just have to wait for o2 to approve it so I can see if it helps improve my silly phone. Tried just now and it says v31 is still the most recent.

Did you do that with over the air on the phone? if so try connecting to the PC and using the nokia software updater... It wasn't available to me over the air.. said latest was v31 but with nsu it found it and updated for me... Though O2 are apparently notoriously slow with their versions of firmware releases.
oh and I fixed the yoooooooooootoooob because I'm a nooooooob
Yeah I have tried it via the software updater a few times now, says not available.
You tooob? .....gotcha!
I took advantage of the 14 day exchange after 3 days and swapped it for a 3Gs.

I read this post and it reminded me of my experiences with the Motorola SLVR - the phone that guaranteed I will never use another Motorola phone as long as I live. The list of complaints you have about your 5800 is almost identical to the list I had with that heap of crap.

3rd iPhone. I bought the original one and then the 3g. All you recent converts are following in my footsteps, so NER!
This has made me chuckle because our postboy at work recently sold his iPhone and picked up a Nokia something or other. Today I noticed he had an iPhone on his desk and asked what happened. He said he just missed it and had to get another!
