View Full Version : Thinking of leaving the hobby behind

After thinking about it for months, I think it's time for me to pack photography in as a "hobby" of mine. I say "hobby" like that simply because it's really not. I bought the camera primarily for our honeymoon last year, but also because I hoped I would get into it as a hobby and get into it seriously. Unfortunately, while I do quite enjoy it, as a hobby it ranks way below my other hobbies, and the last time I used my camera properly was back in August when we went to Florida. I figure I may as well sell my gear now while it's still worth something.
So, if you know of anyone who's interested in the following, just let me know!
Canon 450D + 18-55mm IS kit lens
EF-S 55-250mm IS lens + lens hood
Lowepro AW 160 camera bag
I might be interested in the lens - or certainly might know someone who is. Hang fire a bit Dave, I'll make some enquiries :)
Would help if I asked what kind of price you're looking at too!
I might also be interested in the lens and camera bag Davie. What condition are they in? (assuming pretty immaculate).

Abooie, they are indeed pretty much immaculate, I'll get some pictures put up later for you :)
Kitten, hadn't really thought too much about prices. I know my lens is still selling for around £190 new (without lens hood), so would around £120 or so be unreasonable? I really have no idea what they sell for second hand. I'd probably prefer to sell the whole thing as a job lot, but don't mind splitting for the lovely people here :)
I'd definitely be interested in the lens Davey, but if you wanted to sell as a package and someone wants it, then fair enough. If not, I'll sort something with you :) x

I'll make a post on OcUK (don't have enough posts to sell on TP) to see if anyone is interested in the body and kit lens. If they are, I'll happily split and sell the lens to you, would much rather sell parts of it to someone I know will treat it well :)
You should keep the camera Daveyage. It's a nice camera and doesn't matter if it only comes out now and again. In my opinion the technology on the 450D is far enough advanced (from a picture taking perspective) that newer models are only going to have a higher pixel count, so it's not like it's going to become obsolete sitting in the drawer. My 350D is the same. I see no good reason to sell and upgrade just for the sake of more pixels, so if I don't use it then there's no problem with it gathering dust.

Hold the phone, my flatmate was looking at buying a 450D new t'other day, and i was telling him how silly he would be not to buy second hand :)
I have no idea how much this is worth and how much he'll offer, but just seriously give me a figure you want for it i'll tell him and i'm sure you're both winners really!? :D

I had thought about that Jonny, for some time, but to be honest, given the moderate amount of picture taking I do, our Panasonic TZ6 is more than adequate for it. It's not ideal in low light admittedly, but it's still more than good enough for most events I may want to take pictures of, and having a smaller camera suits me fine! :)

Alex, I've advertised the 450D and kit lens on OcUK for £360, so if he wants the whole lot (including the bag) I'd call it about £480, that's pretty much what he's pay for just the camera and kit lens if he were to buy new.
I'll make a post on OcUK (don't have enough posts to sell on TP) to see if anyone is interested in the body and kit lens. If they are, I'll happily split and sell the lens to you, would much rather sell parts of it to someone I know will treat it well :)
I can post it on TP for you btw, only just saw you mention that :)

I'll tell him :) I'm sure he'd be stupid to say no...

It's ok now, I emailed him them all instead, he seems happy with it all, he's going to speak to me tomorrow to confirm everything, thanks Alex :)
Sorry I can't split the lens for you Kitten, just makes it easier to sell if everything is included :)

Davey are you not selling her the lens now? From what she's told me she thought it had all been agreed? She's gone to bed but I'll tell her in the morning you're selling the whole package to the other guy. She'll be rather disappointed because she's been all excited all night :(

No, you're right, I did say Kitten could have the lens, don't know what I was thinking when I said Alex's friend could have the lot, my head was up the wall. The original deal still stands, lens to Kitten, Alex's friend can have the camera and kits lens if he still wants it :) My apologies to Kitten if she doesn't get this message before she gets all disappointed :)

Davey, I spoke to her last night and she said that it wasn't confirmed with you, and that if you'll lose the sale with Alex's friend then go ahead and bundle it. She's absolutely fine with it. I thought you guys had spoken off the boards, so I'm sorry I've misunderstood the situation. She was talking about it last night so I thought it was a done deal and didn't realise you'd not confirmed details. My bad. :( She's off work today as her mouth is all swollen and sore after the root canal, so I'm sure she'll post or speak to you later about it.

Poor Kitten :( I'll speak to Alex's friend today and see what the situation is, then drop her a text and let her know. Hopefully he'll be happy with the camera and kit lens so Kitten can take the zoom lens :)

Davey if you are likely to lose the sale then just sell him the lens she'll be fine with that :)
Hey Dave, he's right, if you can sell the lot then go for it, no problems here chick x

Sorry Kitten, he wants the whole lot, so can't split the lens for you :( I do have a couple of photography books if you fancy them though. One of them is Understand Exposure, don't know if you have that or not. The other is Digital Photography Masterclass, by Tom Ang. Both yours if you want them :)
I've got them both thanks Davey :)
Edit : Actually I'll check the Tom Ang one, it might be different!

Sorrrrry guys, feel i was stepping on toes a little there! It was just in converstation at the pub that i realised he was looking to buy a new 450d, and i rememebered Davey posting it on a day or two before... OOops
It will serve him very well though and he really will look after it all, he's a little bit anal like that, moreso than i ever would be!
I'm somewhat jealous he's getting it not me, haha, i'd love something like that to play around with every now and then, but i fear it'd probably sit around like it did with you Davey with little use inbetween can't quite justify that at all... :(

doh too slow :(
What are you looking for Psymonkee? I have a brand spanking new 1000D with Kit lens for sale.

Not really sure tbh.
Can't realistically afford anything at the moment anyway :(
Davey, totally understand where you're coming from, and don't blame you for selling. Mine's a keeper just because I wouldn't be happy going back to something less (that was why I upgraded in the first place), but other than that it gets mostly used for snaps (snow, anyone).
Anyway, either of the books left? Might do a bit of research if they are. :)
I'm yoinking the masterclass one but if it's similar to the one I have, I'll pass if along. The exposure one is good, I have it
already - it's one of the most recommended for beginners.
No worries - yoink away. I haven't read most of the Tom Ang stuff I've got already so plenty for me to read yet. :)

As Kitten says, she's taking the Tom Ang book but the Understanding Exposure book is still there. It's yours for cost of postage if you want it, assuming I can find it (I've no idea where it currently is, not read it in months!), or I can hold onto it until we next bump into each other :)
If it turns up I'm happy to pay postage. :)
