View Full Version : iPad
Could have got one for anyone that asked, but no-one did. :p

The other intriguing thing about that video was the responses they gave about why they wanted one. It's almost as if they didn't really know why they wanted one or what they'd use it for :p
Exactly, i'm yet to think of a real reason why i'd ever need one. I mean, it's just a tablet PC to me, they've been around for years and i'm yet to see someone doing something i'd actually find useful on one.
Time will tell i guess.

I agree, the iPad doesn't actually replace anything, it can't replace a Laptop/Netbook, nor is it close to matching the iPhone, it's basically a massive iPod Touch, but not as mobile, so you can't stick it in your pocket.
It doesn't actually fit anywhere, it's pretty much only a *cool* device. Don't get me wrong, I want one, I use my iPod Touch all the time in house, but the iPad is undoubtedly something everyone could happily live without.
Having said numerous times that I see no use for an iPad, I seem to be changing my mind.
I spend a lot of time working abroad and use my iPhone for watching movies and the like when I'm on a plane, train, in a hotel or whatever. The iPhone screen isn't big enough for my liking and my work laptop is too big to use evne when I'm flying business class.
An iPad would be about the right size. That said, for the amount of £ they cost I can make do with the iPhone. That may change next time I visit the US though.

Archos units have filled that gap in the market for years now (video playback). Even going away I'd be more inclined to take a laptop given how many more options it leaves open that an iPad can't do, especially for the price.
I do take a laptop when going away, but it's too big to be able to use comfortably when on a flight, even in business class. Same goes for the Eurostar if you end up with a Solo seat (as I did twice on Tuesday) which has a folding table thing - the laptop is too big.
I could get a smaller laptop but that would make the work side of things a bit more of a faff. I'm going to have a look at an Archos unit, but I can't ignore the iPad - the idea of connectivity on the move with a single box is quite interesting. The price however, isn't.

They are far too expensive, but you come to expect that with pretty much all Apple products, it's just what they do.
The only thing that would put me off watching video's on the iPad is having to hold it out in front of you, although I'm sure some smart fellow will come up with a nice, usable stand at some point.
I like the idea of the connectivity, but the 3G side of it all comes at even more expense doesn't it? Without that you're left purely with Wi-Fi, which is definitely better than it was, but still far from perfect.
However, if I had the money to spend and not necessarily miss it, then I would most likely go with the iPad anyway.

Buy a netbook? My Dell mini ticks all your boxes :) HD screen 3g tiny immense battery life (but im cheating using te big battery) , card reader HDMI out its even got a DVB-t tuner! I got min for £208, but that was a misprice :p its still incredibly cheap, and small enough to take round with your real laptop :) Can do infinitely more things than the iPad :)
What about a netbook? About half the price of an iPad, widescreen which will be slightly better for films and sits very nicely (perfectly in fact) on the little fold down train tables rather than needing to be held up by hand for 2 hours :P
Perhaps a bit OTT if you already have a laptop though a netbook isn't really a huge amount bigger than an iPad.

Already got one - a Dell Mini 9 running OS X. To be honest, I'd forgotten about it!
It's definitely an option, but not ideal - the screen doesn't angle far enough back to make it comfortable for watching for long periods. I took it with me when I took a train from New York City to Niagara Falls and had to prop the thing up with some books after getting a bit of a sore neck.
The other snag is that the PSU is huge, totally disproportionate for the size of the machine. When I'm travelling for work I take a lot of stuff with me and even the netbook and PSU are a bit too big.
I'm not saying the iPad is perfect, the price tag is absolutely hurrendous but it does negate some of the problems with other bits of kit. Nowhere near enough though to make me pay UK prices. US prices? Well, maybe, but it'd be a whim purchase and I've got other things I need to buy before splashign more cash on Apple stuff.

I don't think they already do it, but if it had some kind of file transfer option (for example for storage of photos via USB, rather than via a PC) then I would certainly be interested. When going on holiday it would certainly save on taking the laptop and watching films and playing games on the move would be far easier.

They must have fixed all that with the 10 i guess. Although my screen doesn't open 180* i can put it on the floor and use it from my bed (ie the angle is definitely great enough) and the extended battery raises is to a more comfortable height on a desk. Also my power adapter is basically just a large plug, the type og smallish transformer you get with everything now days like routers etc... I couldn't have been more impressed with its size! Maybe worth a look out :)
That and you can buy multi use notebook chargers too, which i own as well and charge multiple units off, might very well be handy for you travels. Mine plugs into the car, plane, 3 different sockets and has laptop and1 usb out for laptop and phone/usb device charging. It remembers and "sets" its previous voltage. Suits upto 90w! Sounds like that would be exactly what you want man!
I have had numerous multi charger thingys and they've all died after a short space of time so it has put me off getting another. It was a year or so ago that the last one went in the bin so maybe I should pick one up when I go through Heathrow tomorrow.

Apple already did - a combined case/stand. Screen angle is a problem with that though (too upright). :)
I have the same problem - failing to find a use for one. The Plane/Train one is a good choice, no doubt. Unfortunately since I own two Archos players and managed to let the batteries die in both due to disuse, that's another black mark on the iPad card for me. Admittedly they're old models so can't do most of the things the iPad can.
finding a use isn't a problem for me, however price is. I'll defo be waiting to see what the MSI android is like as that is meant to be £300.
But then also seems a waste as I have an iphone and so certain apps are cross compatible. Seems a waste to get two sets of apps.
Here's hopping in a few months time 2nd hand will knock a £100 or so off the price.
Well I've had it for a couple of days now and I'm loving it. When I'm sitting in front of the telly I normally find that I pick up my laptop from time to time but I've just not done so since I got this. If I want to do anything then the iPad is doing exactly what I want.
Took it to work today and it really has the "wow" factor.
The on screen keyboard is great, I can touch type on it better than i could on my Dell mini-9 easily. Yes, it's just an iPod Touch with a big screen but the screen makes all the difference. If I carry on like this then it will turn out to be a replacement for the laptop which may get sold.
I didn't expect to enthuse about it like this but it really is superb.
Picked mine up last night, I love it! :)

Don't tell me that about the keyboard. :p I got my netbook to write on but find the keyboard not very tactile so don't really use it now and use my laptop instead (which is too big and bulky to be seriously portable (got a bigger one to be able to process my photographs properly).
I'll agree with Feek, the keyboard is great! I was able to type without any issue on it, the only downside is not having the number row always visible.

I still can't imagine that keyboard is nicer to use than my netbook i'm using now? its true different keyboards for different strokes etc... And you might not have got on well with the mini 9 because it certainly is tiny, i've tried the acer aspire one and i'm not all that impressed either. But my mini 10 is in the just the right size category, i can type full speed on it with ease (i think they might be pretty much 100% size though this might be why) and they're super comfy! :)
ALEX!! STOP BEING SUCH A FANBOY! WE GET THAT YOU LIKE THE NETBOOK! :p
Seriously, I hate typing on my netbook, I bought it mainly to be able to carry around & use anywhere, but I can't, because I just dislike the keyboard immensely (have tried several other netbooks too in case it was mine, but have the same problem). It's not too small (I have really little hands) I just *don't* like that when I use it, my hands ache afterwards (I type a lot) from having to push the buttons down, however lightly. A virtual keyboard would reduce that issue, surely?
May not be better with an ipad, but it would certainly be an option to consider if others have told me that the keyboard is good. As mentioned too, the photography thing is an issue for me, and that isn't good at all on the netbook. An ipad might allow me to do both easier.

ooohhh i assumed when everyone says they hate their keyboards (and some of them are DIRE) it was an ergonomic thing, but if its the physical pressing action then i guess there's nout you can do, definitely!
In other news I am a total convert to the netbook "thing" recently since i was kinda "forced" into buying one, and since then i've realised they aren't all **** although i still mess around with friends from time to time (and lets face it everyone has a netbook now days) and they definitely weren't all created equally!
Leave me alone meanie...

UK:
16GB WiFi-only £429
32GB WiFi-only £499
64GB WiFi-only £599
16GB WiFi+3G £529
32GB WiFi+3G £599
64GB WiFi+3G £699
Gadget for the rich or daft by the looks of things ;D
Clearly you haven't seen lens prices :p Nikon 24mm f/1.4 for £2,000. Leica M9 body only around £5,000.
Also compare the prices of the iPad to the iPhone on Pay As You Go. iPhone 3GS 32GB - £549. So for £50 more you get a far superior screen.
iPhone 3GS 32GB - £549. So for £50 more you get a far superior screen.
F**k me!
Yup - I paid £449 for my 16GB. However, I've had it 9 months and spend £25 on calls - which is about the same as I spent every month (on contract) on the previous phone. Doesn't hurt so much if you think of it that way.
Also compare the prices of the iPad to the iPhone on Pay As You Go. iPhone 3GS 32GB - £549.
You can try and justify it any way you like but it's expensive for what it is :D
The iPhone isn't cheap, but it is arguably VERY good at what it does. It has generally led the market in it's field (OK, many would disagree) and others are only just catching up. There also aren't many, if any, other phones that have 32GB built in so not comparable to other products. The iPad is just expensive for what it is and what it does. There are other products out there that will do everything that the iPad does and more. Maybe not in the same way or quite as slick as Apple can do it, but that doesn't make it value for money.
All in my opinion of course. And yes, if I had that much spare cash, I'd buy one.
So for £50 more you get a far superior screen.
And no phone.
And no phone.
Because what you really want is a 9.7'' phone :p
http://www.petecarr.net/t/Twitpic_-_Share_photos_on_Twitter-20100507-172814.jpg
Comparing the iPad to the iPod touch is a more valid comparison IMO seeing as they share more in common and that leaves you with £234 vs £499 for 32GB WiFi vs 32GB
Because what you really want is a 9.7'' phone :p
No, I certainly don't. You were the one who compared the two products and prices, not me ;)
iPod Touch doesn't do 3G though. Its interesting though. iPod Touch vs iPad is a big difference. iPhone vs iPad isn't. Ok so you lose the phone app but in exchange you gain all the apps that take advantage of the bigger screen.
That's why I compared the price to the non 3G iPad ;)
If it was iPod vs 3G iPad it would be £234 vs £599, £365 for a bigger screen and a built in £15 3G modem has got to be poor value in anyone's books? :p
That's why I compared the price to the non 3G iPad ;)
I know :p Hence the stuff after :p
Nobody's ever happy, the prices are much lower than expected. Yes, as I said before, it's an iPod Touch with a larger screen but that larger screen makes all the difference.
Nobody's ever happy, the prices are much lower than expected. Yes, as I said before, it's an iPod Touch with a larger screen but that larger screen makes all the difference.
True - it does - and while it's an obvious point that I'll probably be shot down for (again) - you have to see it to believe it.
Of course, whether 'all the difference' amounts to £265 is a judgement call best left to the individual.
Doesn't the iPad also lack other functionality over an iPhone like...a Clock/Alarm app that runs in the background which was clearly beyond Apple's technological capabilities to include :p
Must admit I don't recall seeing one. :dunno:
No, there isn't one - I hadn't even noticed (shows how much I need to use a clock/alarm on it).
Let's face it - the alarm on the iPhone isn't much either. Wake to iPod was also clearly beyond Apple's technological capabilities.

And, found in related links, Orange's data plan pricing:

:( they should over data usage with no time limit.

I have a dock/alarm clock that will wake to the iPhone's music player, but I'll admit it's an oversight not to have it integrated.
Ordered a 32gb 3G iPad. Undecided on data plan but Orange seem the most versatile. The camera connection isn't amazing but its something.

Look at What You Get for $499 in an Android Tablet.
A piece of crap. Three pounds, slow, poor battery life, 4 GB of built-in storage, doesn’t work with YouTube, and no support for Android Marketplace apps. All for the same price as a 16 GB iPad.
Or, you could pay just $199 and get the 7-inch Archos 7 Android tablet. It too is slow (“most apps take four to five seconds to open”), it too does not support apps from the Android Marketplace, it doesn’t have an accelerometer, it uses a resistive (rather than capacitive) touchscreen, and it runs the year-old Android 1.5 OS and there’s no way to upgrade it.
Intel are releasing some new ulltra mobile hardware in a few months, hopefully some half decent Windows/Android based tablets may emerge from that.

Theres nothing wrong with android, it just hasn't been taken advantage of properly yet. But if someone really steps up there is no reason why it can match and beat (flash anyone?) the iPad :)
Speaking of which, Verizon have announced that they're working on a tablet with Google, that will be running Android (and presumably LTE too for 4G connectivity).

Well it'll do that as well ;)
Any news on teh msi android yet and how it stacks up?
http://www.operationandroid.com/content/msi-android-tablet-launch-500
I think Ipad will be leaders for a couple of years. Apples UI on mobile products are just so slick, it took competitors on phones a good year or two to catch up.
Flash anyone? No thanks. HTML5 please. But I think we've done that point before now.
So has Steve Jobs, but that doesn't mean an end to it. Rumour has it that Adobe were behind the DOJ probe of Apple's new requirement that developers may use only their tools. In any event, they're certainly ramping up the media. That's usually Apple's job. ;D
PS - that's not to suggest that I disagree with their stance.
PPS - Archos, firmware issues? Surely not! ;D
Of course theres no end to it yet but the current state is no Flash on iPhone/iPads and I'm ok with all that. Happy to just have HTML5 and to push things that way. I've always preferred HTML over Flash ever since it came out, as a developer not just a user.
Point was that I don't really want to go round in circles about Flash. Its not an option. Lets move on from discussing Flash vs HTML5 until something actually happens :)
it's not no flash. They have banned flash for 1` reason to sell games. pretty much all video sites you would want to use have IApps.
I've had mine since Friday now and i must say, i can't put it down. Even when i am at home, sitting in front of the imac with the ipad charging next to it i find myself playing with it - app store, early edition, etc. I am sure that will fade as I get it the way i want it but in terms of out of the house surfing, i have not seen anything like it.
I too have a netbook, HP 210, Atom 450, 2G RAM, Win7, with an 02 3G dongle. Compare to the ipad, that thing feels like its in the dark ages. It takes at least 3 minutes to power on to be online, where the iPad just always online, like the time it takes to get a signal on the phone, that's what it takes for the internet. Some reason the software for the dongle takes a lot longer.
It might be a lot of money for an gadget, and I do agree, nobody NEEDS an iPad, but hell, it is cool and fun to use.
Best of all, its tax deductible against my photography :D

That's pretty much the way I am with my Nexus One, which is my first smartphone.. I'm interested to see the way things progress longer term with this technology. I'm seeing an increasing number of "Meh... " comments from early adopters here, though not from those that have long been Apple fans. Not sure quite what to make of those that are less interested in it after having it for a little while, it's not clear whether it's because they're irritated with the operating environment, if they're finding it restrictive, isn't really all that useful in the end, or quite what.

I'd go along with that :)
Mondo - have you tried 'air display' yet? It lets you run the iPad as a second monitor for your Mac. For me that'd be perfect for having email/calendar visible all the time and not having to switch displays using spaces (or hyperspaces in my case)

Totally agree - but then the same can be said of most gadgets. Very few people need that big TV in the corner, or that Xbox, or several other things, but that doesn't mean we don't go out ant buy them. :)
Best of all, its tax deductible against my photography :D
Of course, that helps! :)
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05/28/ipad_love_affair_goes_sour/
I think that sums up my views pretty well. It's a great piece of technology, but one that, for many people, will be looking for a use. I'm not anti-iPad. Not at all. I just struggled to figure out where one would fit in my life. It's not portable in the same way that an iPhone is, and neither is it functional in the same way that a laptop is (netbook, debateable either way). That's why I ended up not getting one in the US when I had the opportunity.
I think if you the net on the move a lot, and have the £500 or so to throw at it then it's great. I don't have a contract phone so I am not paying 2 line rental, and I commute to work so I get at least 3 hrs of use from it on the train a day. That's why I got one, I will use it. Buying it and sit on ya bum in the sofa at home however is a bit much I think.

Not yet, I saw the review and thought twice about it. It says it's slow?
I do want to try logmeit ignition thou, that lookswicked
I've not used it myself but a chap I know has and he says that there is a very slight delay but nothing that he finds an issue.
Content is king. If people make great content that you can only get from an iPad then it'll sell. Sure the Wired app is a clone of their print edition but the level of interactivity added makes it very appealing.
I got a netbook, the Acer Aspire 1 when it was £150, with a view to lug it around all the time. I mean why not? Its tiny. That idea didn't last long. Its tiny compared to my Macbook Pro but its still a bit of a lump with about 2, maybe 3 hours battery life. I haven't used that in a year or so. But the iPad is so sleek it just slips into my bag and doesn't feel overly heavy. I can wander around town with my GF1 and iPad in my bag quite nicely. Take some photos. Stop off at a wifi coffee shop and enjoy some casual browsing in a way that doesn't feel cramped like on the iPhone.
Last night I met my gf at the local tea bar thing where she knits with friends. I used the time to catch up on some articles I had Instapaper'd through the day. Same for Monday. Went to the pub for tea. She knit, I twittered and browsed n stuff.
It never feels like I'm lugging it along. It doesn't feel like I'm getting out a clunky laptop that could be a bit rude to use in a pub. If I got out a 15'' MBP and started browsing, tweeting etc well its a big device. It could seem like I'm lost in it. But the iPad is about the size of a book. Its easy to put down, or maintain a conversation with.
Of course thats all in my head. The way I'm perceiving things. We're both laptop users and do disappear behind them at the table, but are still able to chat happily without resorting to "You love that damned laptop more than me!" ;) But the iPad really feels completely unobtrusive.
Last night I met my gf at the local tea bar thing where she knits with friends.
That is way cooler than having an iPad!
Then I'm lucky to have both cool things in my life :p
From what I'm beginning to see from those who are finding themselves bored with the iPad it's the consumer/creator thing that's tripping them up. They're used to devices that are both, and the iPad is "just" a consumer. It's interesting. I've a niggling feeling they'll get bored, forget about it for a while and then a killer app / content form will come along and the iPad will surge back into use for them.

This could be well true, but then for most people, the only thing they create are Facebook status updates, tweets, emails and forum posts. I for one don't do anymore than that even on my netbook or even pc. The only real product I make is from my camera with my iMac doing the processing. I do not and will not expect a portable device like this to match my iMac. But even that need js very specific, most people will just surf, period.

They generally seem to be people who have no use for it either. They don't surf on the couch whilst watching the tv, or have a job where they can use it for time killing.
Had a go on one the other day and it was simply amazing, teh screen is so nice. Right size as well. What I was most impressed with was teh book app. I would have no problem reading it for extended periods. it does not look liek a computer screen.
Wish I could afford one. I have bundles of time to kill at work and am nearly constantly surfing in front of the tv. Iphone screen is just to small to be comfortably.
There's some stunning artwork being produced with the drawing apps. Also some great music apps around. It is a mostly consumer device but with potential in there for random bits of interest.

What I was most impressed with was teh book app
I've been using my iphone to read books (app called Stanza) for over 18 months and I find that perfect (although Moby Dick is a bit of a struggle!). I wouldn't complain about a bigger screen for reading, but like the 'all in one' I already have...
I can wander around town with my GF1 and iPad
You have more than one? So much so that they need to be numbered!!??
Last night I met my gf at the local tea bar thing
WHICH ONE!!?? DAMNIT!!!??
:p
There's the gf and the gf1. The gf1 is a camera. Aptly named though ;)
I have been meaning to get off the sofa and get on my iMac to do some "proper" net surfing but Its been 3 hours now and i am still on the sofa with my iPad. This is not what i bought it for but it is tonight.....
I have also spent about 30 mins looking at the Pulse app, an rss reader basically but can link to basically any site and can display it with a image thumbnail. It is soooo slick, rss reading made easy.

This is the main page, you flick down for more "channels", each horizontal line is 1 feed, and flick sideways to see older posts, and when you do that, only THAT line is moving, the rest stays stationary on the page.

You can read the feed mostly text or like it on its original site, for example here. Depends if the feed or story you are reading is a text rich or photo rich content.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/4915/photo2.png (http://img715.imageshack.us/i/photo2.png/)
tap the bottom left (blue triangle) and the feed's thumbnail bar will pop up again.

Well after a few weeks the novelty hasn't worn off. The iPad is a lot like a console for me. Consoles separated gaming from my desktop. The iPad has separated casual internetting from desktop. So my iMac is purely for work now. As a freelancer I like that. There used to be little separation in my life. I would work at the desk. Read websites at it and play games at it. Sure I had a laptop and I could sit on a couch with it but that's still a bit too close to the work environment. I could work on a couch. It feels like I'm actually taking a break from work, which is good.
The other thing is that I now prefer apps to websites. Reeder > Google Reader. eBay app > eBay site. Even the iPod app is nicer than iTunes.
Oh and the battery is phenomenal. Why lug around a laptop with a few hours use when you could get an iPad with an entire days use, or more? It's fantastic.
Glad to hear it's working out for you.
I went the laptop route, but I am at least heading in the right direction, having shed 1.5 kg compared to the previous one. The battery in this should last all day as well, which would certainly be nice. :)
I've lost a lot of CPU power, but I only went for (at the time) top spec because of my job, and I'm not doing that job anymore. I paid the price for that choice too - the laptop can't handle the heat load if I max the CPU for any length of time.
Work/home separation is good. After 5-10 years of mostly working at home with no separation at all I'm working from home less and less and it's doing me no harm at all.
Same, i use mine at least 3 hours a day, often 4 to 5. And i love it.
Net, apps, Emails, a game of Angry Birds, Check out the iBook Store, or grab a free book on Amazon Kindle, or read a magazine on Zinio, whilst listening to music on it
if one were so inclined one could just source books from various online sources in epub format and drop them into itunes just like music that one could source from similar sites. just incase anyone was unware....

Well, I succumbed. Got myself one yesterday after having had a good play with my sister-in-law's one last week.
I still say I don't have a particular use for it that I can't do with existing tech I own but it's a lot of fun. I'm still getting to grips with it and finding out what it does and looking for useful apps. I've booked myself in for an iPad workshop at the apple store tomorrow night. I'm hopeful that will help me get the most from it.
Need to have a good rummage around the app store to find useful/fun stuff.

Traitor! They are write fun to play with though, I'm still waiting for a more polished version of the dell streak personally. Hopefully someone can sort something out :)
Dell Streak is just too small/cramped to be even a remote contender for the iPad crown. Cost isn't that much different either IIRC.

I totally agree, but its the first of hopefully a lot of android tablets, i just want someone to bring out some decent hardware, its that simple (;D ;D)
I was at Dell HQ in Bracknell today and they mentioned they're brining out a 7" tablet. Apparently the release date isn't set in stone yet but it's currently planned for August/September.
Unfortunately the enterprise account teams won't be able to get access to them so I can't get a freebie. Booo.
Should have told them to hurry up with my order (also via enterprise account). :p ;D
Will certainly have a look at it but I'm yet to be convinced of the format. The current version seemed to have an incredibly busy interface and I'll need convincing that two inches will help. :)
I forgot to say that the 7" version is code named 'looking glass'
I'll need convincing that two inches will help. :)
Quoted for later usage!

That depends what it's supposed to be helping with. In some cases, there's no hope at all! :p

iPads are for Peados and Rapists if the facial expressions from the last 60 minutes are anything to go by.
I have the works one as I will need it for a trade show next week and as I'm stuck on a 3 hour journey from London to Cambridge I decided to get it set up. I think I would have been more popular waving my dick around whilst singing the Oxford Boat race song.
Annoying I want to hate it but I can't. I'm sat here trying to work out my justification for my boss buying me one :(

Damned annoying isn't it?
When they were first announced, I was full of scorn. I assumed it was another overpriced shiny toy for the Apple fanbois to waste their money on and laughed at their gullibility. Then I had a try of my sister-in-law's one and two days later I was standing in the Apple store with my debit card in hand trying desperately to attract the attention of one of the staff - like a child in a sweet shop desperate for a Sherbet Dip Dab.
It is a smashing gadget. I can't get over how much I like it - I feel dirty :'(

Just re-read this and decided to point out that it is only the first from Dell. Several others were already available (Archos have sold one for over a year, for example).

A lot of decent android tablets, Archos haven't got a clue nowdays... Samsungs offering today looks more like it :) If its a big version of their galaxy they've got a MASSIVE hit on their hands, as i can tell you the galaxy S is something special phone wise :)
You mean the Samsung iPad made by some Chinese back alley knockoff shop? :)

You're right its probably the same factory the ipad is made in (everything electronic is made over there), just without the apple sticker and price tag? ;)
Well now it really sounds crap :p

To be honest though, the hardware is only a part of the iDevices. What really makes them different is the EXTREMELY simple and easy to use GUI, the huge support behind it with regards to apps, etc and also the fact that they are very, very shiny ;)
