View Full Version : iPhone : Sleep Cycle alarm clock as mentioned by Blighter
As mentioned by Blighter in the iPad thread and as bought by me late last night I felt I just had to give this app its own thread.
On Blighter's suggestion I bought the Sleep Cycle alarm clock (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=320606217&mt=8) and set it for 09:00 this morning, wondering how it would cope with my incredibly restless sleep patterns.
At around ten to nine this morning I'd practically woken up. I'd glanced at the clock and noticed the time, feeling quite awake. I wondered whether to shut my eyes and go back to sleep or go with the awake feeling and get up (I'd forgotten that I had that alarm set).
All of a sudden my iPhone started playing a tune to wake me up, but I was already awake! I got up and I don't feel tired. It does seem to have worked out that it was the right time for me. If I'd rolled over and nodded back off again I'd probably have dropped straight into deep sleep.
So today it worked well.
I generally don't sleep well on Sunday nights and it's not something I'm going to rely on this quickly as if I'm not awake in time then I don't just mess up my day but also the person that I car share with but I'm certainly going to run it for the week and see how it goes.
So far so good though.
Here's last nights sleep pattern.

Me too Feek. First time I used it last night & liking it so far!

I uses the accelerometers in the phone to detect movement, if you aren't moving much you are in deep sleep.
MB
It says not to put it under pillows or it won't measure properly - you're supposed to put in next to the pillow at the end of the bed
Blighter

It'll work anywhere on the bed :) Theres a test function and it works at the foot of your bed too.

Surely theres a LOT more to measuring deep sleep than movement? I mean you look at researchers who are checking for deep sleep and i requires a lot more hardware!? I like the idea but i it sounds more gimmicky to me? I am hugely cynical over almost anything like this though... :p
/Edit:A quick google would suggest this:http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2010/01/03/now-you-can-even-use-your-iphone-while-you-sleep/ would probably be a lot more beneficial, but yeah also a lot more expensive because it actually measures things sensibly?
//Edit2: Although lots of people do seem to swear by it, but i do wonder how much of it is in their head? If it works i guess no one cares for a few pennies!
If you're concerned about putting a phone near your head overnight then just put it in airplane mode.
Personally I don't believe the theories that RF at the incredibly low levels from mobile phones is damaging at all, I've been near significantly higher fields than a phone can generate since I was about 8 or 9 and it's not affected me at all *twitch*

Just downloaded this. Hopefully this will help me get up for my morning cardio which is always a struggle :p
Even that close to my head for 8ish hours.... the reason I say that and it may just be total coincidence but I used to put my phone above my head on the headboard at night and sleep was pretty poor, but then I read something about having phones that close can disturb your sleep, so now I put the phone in reach but further away and I seem to be getting better sleeps... Though last night I was dreaming about geocaching (first multicache find in one attempt yesterday) and was so excited I'm worn out this morning!
As said, Flight mode. Even says that in the instructions! Alex, I checked the clock last night when I woke up (4 times) and the stats match exactly what I thought. Don't care if it's 'in the mind' if it works, It works & I don't care what the science is. Usually science overcomplicates simple stuff anyways - if you're moving more, likely you're in a lesser state of sleep, surely?
If you're concerned about putting a phone near your head overnight then just put it in airplane mode.
Which is what they say in the instructions too.
Doesn't seem to be very keen on my pocket sprung mattress (no surprises there). Even right next to my head it wasn't very reliable in test mode and didn't go off until 9 (the time I'd set) even though I was somewhat awake.
I'll persevere. I got a very restless nights sleep last night so that probably didn't help.
It didn't have much of a chance this morning, I was wide awake at 05:00 but in the deepest sleep possible when it woke me at 05:40!

Told you I don't sleep well on a Sunday :)
You weren't kidding. I didn't do much better - I got just over an hour of deep sleep and I woke the alarm clock up. At least there's a pattern emerging - last two nights I've gone to sleep fairly quickly (30 minutes or so), had an hour or two of deep sleep, and then fitful after that.
I use a dock to charge my phone so that would be a bit of a PITA to use at night :p
For a cheap app for helping you workout your sleep it's pretty good I guess, but sleep is far far more complicated than that. Though with the way I'm sleeping at the moment it could well help! ;D Don't think it can resolve anxiety or stress though which is a shame.
With mine, I undocked the phone and put it in airplane mode before going to bed. Net result was only 15% battery used, which isn't bad at all. I suppose it might wear the battery down a little quicker. Then again, it might not. :dunno:
I leave my phone on, I like to be contactable in emergencies (a lesson I learnt a while back). I'm not bothered about the RF stuff anyway :) By the time I get to bed my phone is drained and needs charging which I do over night.
Anyway this is detracting from the topic - I'd be interested to see how you get on with this for a week monsieur Feek.
Tried this last night, it seemed I fell asleep at about 2 and went into a deep sleep until my alarm time. :\
Been using it for about 3 weeks - seems to have helped a lot and I don't really know why, but I certainly sleep better after simply using this app :/

I bought this app last week too but sadly I need to be literally jumping on my bed to get it to pick any movement up. Seem's it doesn't like my memory foam mattress much! :(
Memory foam doesn't move in the same way, as it's designed not to move the whole mattress when you do. Unfortunately, that's going to be a problem when its trying to measure your movement.:(

I didn't even take the mattress in account when I bought the app. The idea of it just seemed cool at the time ;D
I didn't even read how you used it :o Should pay more attention really :D
Interesting stuff - I just wish I had a better way of waking up!
I used to have an laptop program that would require me to solve multiple maths queries and type in a long string of random characters before turning off it's ear splitting siren!
This however would not make me particular popular with the sleep-loving-PG, and it would sure be nice to simply be able to awaken and get up on my own accord! ;D
I remember reading that complicated alarms don't help and after a while you get fed up of them and will just circumvent them eventually (turning off the plug, smashing it to pieces etc)
Apparently, our senses pick up a sunrise, so having an increasing level of brightness in your room makes all the difference. It's recommended you sleep with your blinds or curtains open enough to let the morning sun do its work, or if you can't, use one of those lights that gradually get brighter before finally waking you up with an alarm. Some of these lamps are even confident enough to state that after a while you'll find yourself disabling the audible alarm as you'll be up and getting dressed before the buzzer goes off.
The unnatural way most people wake is a dark room, loud buzzer, and a catapault into conciousness that's akin to a coma patient being woken after 10 years and instantly being asked to do a sudoku puzzle upside down.
When I'm not having sleep issues (I normally sleep REALLY well), I wake up naturally in the morning with dawn, even in winter I'm up before my alarm. Always feel refreshed and raring to go, I love mornings. I don't think an app will help anyway, as I'm startled by the alarm maybe a handful of times a year. I'm already like a puppy on heat in the morning, so I wonder if I'll be even bouncier with the app? God, can you imagine?!

i REALLY want a decent really bright (thinking SAD) light alarm with iPod dock and radio etc as well... Even better if i could also use it as a bedside light as well. Last time i checked i couldn't find anything less than hundreds of ££'s!? Gave up and bought a bargain iPhone DAB/FM Dual Alarm Radio Dock extravaganza which does everything (apart from wake me nicely :p) for £20.
I do want a nice light-y wake-y alarm though, that would be an awesome way to wake up, and i do find if i leave my curtains ajar that does help me wake up in the morning, but not always at the right time!

Exactly my situation! ;D Waking up isn't the real problem for me, it's getting awake enough to not turn off an alarm and fall back into bed for a few more hours.
I saw a facebook group which summed up the situation "ALARM - Snooze - ALARM - Snooze - ALARM - Snooze - ALARM - Snooze - IT'S WHAT TIME?! ALREADY!?!" :p
Does anybody have any experience of those Light alarm clocks that increase in intensity over time / recreate a sunrise etc?
App sounds good but my Touch doesn't make a noise so no alarm part for me which I imagine somewhat defeats the point!

Got one. Goes from blue to bright light so that when the alarm goes off, it's on full sunshine mode because I'm exactly the same re: light waking me up feeling good and refreshed. However strangely, the clock just doesn't work for me. I wake up as soon as the blue light starts to get whiter, and just turn it off (while still pretty much asleep!)
Mine cost around £65 if I remember rightly, is a Philips wake-up light clock.
In fact, it's this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001P81T9W/ref=asc_df_B001P81T9W554466?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=7974&creativeASIN=B001P81T9W)

I still can't justify £60 though, why can't they take existing tech and stick a big light on it instead of reinventing the wheel? My alarm clock does EVERYTHING and was £20, it just needs a big light and i don't want to pay through my ass for it, i can't afford it! ;D

This :D
I tried this last night and it is pretty interesting to see how you sleep. It says that I was in a deep sleep till 3 and then I woke up 4 times before I needed to wake up. Which is what I always seem to do, sleep for a good while then have a restless sleep where I wake up, turn over and go back to sleep :) Although I woke up before the alarm so I didn't see how I felt with it waking me up :)
I bought this app last week too but sadly I need to be literally jumping on my bed to get it to pick any movement up. Seem's it doesn't like my memory foam mattress much! :(
Doh, that's a shame. I fancied trying this :D
Glad I didn't buy it last night now!
I've got a memory foam topper on my mattress (and a feather topper on top of that). I have the same problem but found that if I put the iPhone in the recommended position, and close to my pillow, it seems to work well enough.
I nearly fell asleep at work at 2PM today. Got some fresh air and a second wind. Clearly need to do something about my sleep patterns. ;D
I don't trust myself with SAD lights. I'd probably knock it over. ;D

It's very rare that I'm awake before my alarm if I have one set.
Always feel refreshed and raring to go, I love mornings.
I can honestly say I've never woken up feeling refreshed and raring to go :(
I've seen on TV programs people saying this and thought it was just TV talk, now I know I'm wrong.
It would be nice to not feel tired all the time :)

This.
I find snoozing after the alarm goes off makes things worse. That's one notable benefit of this alarm - I put the iPhone under the sheet (so I can't knock it off the bed). That makes getting at the 'off' button somewhat more challenging in the morning. The other options involve hitting it (expensive) or letting the battery run flat (boring). :)

You should try one of the helicopter alarms... the ones that fly off of the base, and the base won't shut up until you find the copter and return it to base!! They are relatively cheap too :)
The alarm on my phone asks me to solve mathematical problems before I can kill it, seems to work. My maths first thing in the morning is terrible though!
Be nice if this tool worked on my touch. :(

I spent over £100 on a sunlight alarm clock a couple of years ago. Absolute ****. I could have made a better quality contraption using a regular clock radio, a torch and a fishbowl.
Sound crapped out on the speaker eventually so it wasn't even good for the gentle sounds of waves crashing on a beach or tropical rainstorms that came with it. In fact, that was the only good thing about it and I still have the mp3s somewhere.
Do you normally go to bed with a hammer to hand?
Let's put it this way - I'd be more likely to be able to find the hammer than the helicopter. Failing that, there's always flying lessons - seems appropriate for a helicopter. :)
Kitten - I'll give the iPhone some more chance to do its thing. Speaking of which, I'm off to bed. :)

Pretty much sums up how I sleep.
Tried it last night. Big peak at 1am just before I dropped off, then practically flatline until the alarm! Makes sense - the last month or so I've found it so hard to wake up in the mornings. Need to start going to bed earlier...
... same.
I was semi-awake about 25 minutes before alarm time today and clobbered the phone, which is a sure way to set it off. ;D
Far too early, so I buried it under a pillow for 15 minutes. :)

Mine was a little better this morning, 20 mins before the alarm time and felt quite fresh, although judging by the graph it was my first climb out of deep sleep. I think I need to sleep more and get a decent peak/trough thing going.
Didn't feel like the right time though - I was very bleary eyed. I did leave the alarm on to make sure I didn't go back to sleep, and it seemed to work.
Anyway, bedtime. :)
Time for a morning update. Short night last night as it was contest time and I was home late.
http://ocukroguesgallery.com/feek/temp/IMG_0115-20100203-063419.png
The peak before 05:00 was when I managed to knock the phone on the floor, but I picked it up and it seemed no worse for wear. I went straight back to sleep and was woken up at 05:26 when (as per last night) I felt pretty awake anyway.
The frustrating thing today was that the alarm was set for 05:50 so it was very early.
I got up to find a boiler not working properly that's 4 days out of warranty. I shall be making a call to them at 09:00!

The alarm just went off. Unfortunately I got up 10 minutes ago, with a stiff neck. :(
I tried it but it didn't work last night... it helps if you turn the wall socket to "on"... Oops. :o Went to bed a bit earlier than usual (930pm) and was up at 313am which was nice :/ I just wanna sleep 8hrs kthxbye. Is that too much to ask? I'll try again tonight, it'll be interesting how it looks. Knowing my luck (and I hope it does happen) I'll sleep properly tonight! :D

90 minutes should be the optimum since (on average) a sleep cycle is about 90 mins, working out roughly when you go to sleep to when you want to be woken (by alarm or whatever) if you make it divisible by 90mins it works out fairly well :)

Yeah, I feel knackered today, too much sleep I guess :p
You see I'm not convinced about this... have a look hear at last night's graph. Now apparently I was in deep sleep straight away. Also I got out of bed at 207am for a pee. Then I was up at 414am for some water. From 5am onwards I was reading in bed.

I think this just proves I don't move much in bed. :) However when I do sleep and not suffering from insomnia, WW3 could be going on outside and I wouldn't hear it.
I had close to 5hrs sleep which doesnt' correspond to the above.

Not so good today, I'd set the audio switch on the iPhone to 'mute' so that I wouldn't get woken by my usual midnight emails and although their website shows that the alarm works fine when the phone is muted I was awake intermittently from 03:00 onwards sort of waiting for the alarm to sound. I shouldn't have been because I'm still setting my existing alarm anyway.
Well I set mine up last night and went to sleep. Woke up this morning to find my iPhone showing BD in Safari ;D
Still, I don't think this thing really works on our bed. It's too easy to set off, even if you just move your feet.

That doesn't look right... maybe change the placement of the phone on your bed?
It was near my head (I had it on airplane mode and put my sim in another phone in case of emergencies). I did the test thing and I could hear a tone every time I moved in bed so thought it was ok?
Not everyone moves in the pattern it's trying to predict though. I don't think anyone should be taking it too literally what the graph is showing, you've got people who barely move when trying to sleep and others who fidget, how would the phone know if you're simply lying still or actually asleep?
Exactly my point. Hence why I'm not convinced by this app yet.
Mine's been pretty spot on each night. I'm quite surprised by the accuracy of it. Could be the placebo effect, but I don't care - I've been more awake in the mornings this week than I have for months - and less tired in the afternoon/evening.I know last night that I lay awake, pretty still until around 2, then dropped off, and that's *exactly* what my graph shows. It shows awake, and dipping in and out of drowsy until 2 when it goes into freefall sleepiness.
Annoyances.org: Seems the alarm volume is tied to the phone volume, so one affects the other. That's not very good.
You guessed, it didn't wake me up this morning - not that it mattered. :)

As Jamie says, doesn't really work for us as it's too sensitive for the bed :/
Shame, I really liked the wake up music.
There's a solution for that:
Set the alarm for the time you want, but don't put it on the bed. It'll still wake you up at the right time (unless there's an earthquake ;)), with the right music. :)
I shall most likely do the same.

I'm guessing cos it's a water bed? The water probably emphasises each movement.

And for the record, I have no idea what a placebgo is either :p
Sorry i was typing on my iPad its hard to use the keyboard ;D
Hhmmmm, Seemed to work nicely again today :)
Yes, I've been finding it very effective. I won't use it at the weekend because I don't want an alarm but it would be quite good to have it able to run and just monitor so I can see what it thinks my sleep patterns are at the weekend. It's one of the things in their 'to do' list.

Just set the alarm to something silly like 6pm

So my phone was on my bedside cabinet last night and I set the alarm for 8.30. Apparantly I was in my lightest sleep cycle at 8am :p
I did an experiment - set the phone the other end of the house from me. Alarm set for 9.05, went off at 8.39.
I think it's a result of the 'calibration' it does. Obviously if it can't tell when you're awake, it guesses. Fair enough I suppose.
Clearing the calibration might get the alarm to go off when you want it to.

;D
Well for me it's working very well. This morning it woke me up twenty minutes ahead of my scheduled alarm time and I got up feeling great. I change the alarm sound every couple of days so I don't get used to the tune and on the whole I'm really impressed. Each time the alarm sounds I'm sort of ready for it and not surprised at all.
If it were just a placebo effect then I'd expect I'd be back to the old habit of waking up and not wanting to get up which I'm not so I'm happy!

Not bad for 59p :D
I'm always awake before any alarm I set - stress, don't you love it! :D
I've now been re-introduced to my bed that I used to have in my old flat - it's been in storage since my move, so so nice to have a proper bed back, but it means I'll have to re-teach this thing. I'm still not convinced by it at all - surely it shouldn't have peaks at all if you leave it on your bedside table since it doesn't move at all? Anyway, if it's gimmicky an it helps people feel better in the morning then it's all good. I don't think it'll improve my sleep/wake up.

Even though Sleepcycle didn't work for us, I really liked the alarm sounds in there so I stripped them out and made a Cydia package to install them on the phone to be used as normal alarm sounds.
You can grab it via Cydia from here... "http://iphone.pigmo.co.uk/bd/" :)
Ooh, nice, I'm very tempted. Only problem I have with that is I'm not sure you can delete sources (repositories) once you've added them. Nothing at all against you but I like to keep my source list as clean as possible as there's less chance of Cydia going fubar that way (it tends not to like it if a source repository breaks).
You can delete sources, I've done it several times.
OK, for some reason I thought you couldn't. Don't know where I got that idea from.
Edit - and done - thank you. :)
I've been using it for 43 nights now with an average 6hrs 50mins sleep. Its been great so far although recently I'm back to the 'don't want to get up/I hate mornings' kind of mind set. Maybe I also need to change alarm sound also.
One hundred uses later...

I've actually used it for more than 100 nights but I was unable to backup/restore my phone for about three weeks while I was using the beta of iOS4.
Anyone else still using it?
Stopped using it after a week as it really didn't lend itself to being of any use to me.
I used it a lot until my Nan passed away then my sleep patterns went to pot and haven't really gotten back to where they were. I think I will though, when I settle down a bit more.
I still use it to remind me I don't get enough sleep.
before I had to restore my phone last night I was on about 50 nights with a 5hr 30min average! :(
