I blame Garp, his presence must have somehow carried over the net to my external hdd. Now I have a 500gb external hdd which I have taken apart and discovered that there were two hdds and one has snuffed it. These were Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250gb drives.

Now if I was to get another ide drive to replace the knackered one, these tend to be Seagate 7200.10 which store data vertically. Now in my mind there should be no issue with just getting another drive and shoving it in. So am I correct or is there anything else that I should be thinking about?

If it's the Netgear one they use a wierd partition format that's not compatible with Windows, and can be a royal PITA to fix. Otherwise, you're probably OK, but make sure you set jumpers the same on the new disk. Also, you may lose data on the other disk in the process. :(

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

Oddly enough my 500Gb WD "MyBook" external HDD went tits up just after I got on the rig (no music, DVDs or pr0n for the whole hitch :( ).

I can hear the drive spinning but keep getting USB device not recognised type messages so I'm hoping it's the SATA-USB interface that's borked. Will try the drive in one of my PCs when I get back and if it's still working, I'll get a new enclosure for it.
