View Full Version : Final Fantasy XIII
Nearly upon us!
I had been planning to get the 360 version (just prefer the pad), but after reading the comparison at Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-face-off), I think I'd better get the PS3 version. Shame really, the idea of FF with achievements always appealed (trophies != achievements in my book :p)
Looking forward to it though :)

Will read the review on the PS3, I've been tempted a few times recently, was planning on picking one up when the new GT game family emerges. In the meantime I have a copy coming for the 360, Shopto have charged me which usually means it gets delivered the next day :)

I don't even bother with Eurogamer anymore. They talk a lot of bollocks.
Yes the PS3 version does look better, but that argument is so PS3 bias that when it comes to the FPS being higher on 360 it suddenly doesn't matter, for example, yet that argument is, and always has been, the key in game comparisons.
As for the graphic comparisons, I've never actually seen one that I've thought "wow, massive difference", even the ones they show, if they didn't inform people which was supposedly better, then people wouldn't know and wouldn't be able to argue it. That article is quite possibly the biggest load of **** I've seen published on a major site in years.
I feel the need to express my disgust at this game without any bias what so ever :D.
Haly better enjoy it though ;) ;D
Hehe yes I'm extremely lucky enough that thanks to the lovely Zico, I have a copy on its way :D \o/
And I'm rather excited :D
On a similar note, BD people keep an eye out for a gaming giveaway early next week :) Raiding my pile of gaming related goodies over the weekend to pass on the good fortune :D

Anyone who's ordered from shopto and been told their order has been despatched shouldn't get their hopes up; it seems that even though they've updated the status to despatched they aren't actually posting them till today. So you'll be getting it on Monday.
Quite disappointed to say the least.
I've tried one FF game on the PS2 and while it was ok it didn't really grab me. Reading the reviews of this one they say stick with it for 15hrs and then it gets good. It looks fantastic but I dunno if I can really spend 15hrs playing something in the hope it gets good.
My copy is here :D \o/ \o/
Thank you once again Zico :D

You're welcome.
Hopefully you will enjoy FFXIII as much as I will of BFBC2.

Ok, the first two hours had me worried, it was incredibly linear (like, you couldn't even turn even slightly left or right, it was just straight on or nothing) and the combat was a yawn-fest. But after a certain point the combat turned from the most boring FF ever to the most frantic, it's what the FFX-2 combat system SHOULD have been. I'm loving it!
Same experience as Streeteh :D
Looking forward to more time with it later :)
It really has turned a fantastic corner after the slog of the first couple of hours. :)
Love the paradigm system and fighting on the whole feels much more interactive than previous FFs.
Best of all it's the kind of game that makes me not want to stop playing which is always a good sign :D
Edit: I'm surprised by the reviews suggesting it's incredibly tedious for the first 20hrs. I haven't found it to be the case, although I'm sure being a FF fan helps there.
Who else has picked it up?
I'm biding my time a bit - times are busy, and I dont want to buy it if I cant play it. How are you finding it on 360 Jen? Without the PS3 version to compare it to right in front of you, does it look up to snuff compared to existing 360 stuff?
Looks lovely to me :)
I'm sure side by side it'd look inferior (there's plenty of screenshots to demonstrate that) but I don't feel like I've got an inferior product at all yet.

I think part of the problem is that the ingame graphics are so very close to the CG cutscenes, literally sometimes the transition happens without you noticing on the PS3. On the 360 however they're compressed so compression artefacts would take away from that seamless integration.
I imagine the actual graphics however are near identical.
I'll be picking up the 360 version at some point; the complaints haven't put me off and I still think it'll be a while until I pick up a PS3. I've decided to hold off until I finish Divinity II though; starting a 2nd RPG leads to trouble!
Is it me though but compared to the The Darkness, Orange Box, Bayonetta etc. 360 > PS3 there's a far bigger song and dance being made now a title is PS3 > 360...

Of course there is, it's PS3.
You hear the same things about every PS3 exclusive pre-launch too (and again defending them post-launch.)

There is a big hoo-ha over not much, but then the same happened when GTAIV came out and the 360 had the edge. The Darkenss, Organse Box and Bayonetta probably have less sales combined (on consoles) than FFXIII or GTAIV will have. Big releases get people riled up, it's not entirely just because 'it's PS3'

I think a lot of it is to do with the PS3 to be honest. Most of the hoo-ha over GTAIV was that Rockstar delayed its release just to get a working PS3 version of it and that Microsoft had paid $50m for its DLC in a timed exclusivity deal.
In the FFXIII argument I've seen things over improved graphics (and then shown screenshots with almost zero difference) and articles stating that although the Xbox360 has the higher frame-rate, that doesn't matter (despite being all important in every other game.) I've heard so many arguments, including "enjoy swapping discs", as a
From what I've seen, graphically at least, the difference between FFXIII on both consoles isn't as big as GTAIV was on both consoles, although I do think the arguments have died quite a lot in the last 2 weeks, probably coinciding with the poor review scores (although thankfully, almost everyone I know who plays it has said it's much better than those reviews, so I'm looking forward to playing it.)
Personally I would buy the PS3 version, but will be more than happy to play the Xbox360 version (which looks the more likely) and I'm looking forward to it.
I'm going to put my hands up and say I have never played a Final Fantasy game in my life. I assume that if I were to get XIII I wouldn't be missing anything? But before that, what kind of game is it as I've always assumed it's and rpg.

It's more precisely, a JRPG. Genre's in games have become rather tenuous at best and when you start classing games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 as RPG's (which they are) and then Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia etc.. as RPG's, then something has to change.
There are elements that you will recognize from Mass Effect for example, like levelling, item distributions and weapon upgrades, but it's all done very differently.
As for missing anything, no, the Final Fantasy games are all separate from each other, often featuring completely different characters, the only accurate part of the title is 'Fantasy', because it's neither 'Final', nor are they sequels.
It's quite weird, I'd never known anyone who hadn't played a Final Fantasy game, then in 24 hours I've heard 4 people all ask the same things as you did. Spooky.

I owned FF VII and probably played it for about 30 minutes, certainly no more than that. Can't remember why either, I don't recall not liking it. To be honest though, JRPGs have never really interested me that much, much prefer the Western RPGs like Fallout and Mass Effect.

I too much, much prefer western RPG's, I think there's a lot of snobbery with JRPG's in general, many of them are very poor with little to no progression in how those games work, but when they're good, they're REALLY good.
The problem is, it got really good with Final Fantasy VII and VIII and no one has really been able to beat them since and that's been going on for over a decade.

Posted this on OcUK, figured it summed up my feelings pretty well:
Clocked the story today, if i'm honest i was a little disappointed. The story (which is the most important part of a FF game for me) just lacked that something that the games have lacked after FFX. The gameplay was epic, probably the best in any FF ever, but i didn't care much about the characters and the plot was ropey at best. I'll always remember how sad i was when the previous games ended, the moment the bright flash of light shrouds Cloud & co from view for the last time, the moment Rinoha points to the sky with Squall, the moment Yuna performs the sending and Tidus fades, this game lacked that. Sure they tried, but there wasn't enough character development for me to care much about the outcome. With that said i can't wait to really explore the endgame and fell the heavyweight as i'm sure i'll enjoy that as much as i enjoyed battling ruby weapon or penance, i just won't ever bother playing the game through again which is a shame.
Still a great game, it just wasn't great for a final fantasy.
I'm on Chapter 9 now. Playing relatively slowly as RL things keep getting in the way.
I'm really enjoying it but it doesn't feel like a FF game at times. I don't mind the linearity of it but much like you Streeteh, I've yet to see anything that's enthralled me or made me really feel for the characters.
But I absolutely love the combat system. It's brilliant and I love that the bosses are actually pretty challenging!
When I play it, I don't want to stop playing it which is a good sign but it still lacks something.
So far I'd entirely agree that it's a great game, but not great for a Final Fantasy.
Thinking of picking this up (PS3 version) very soon.
How is it for save points / saves in general as having the 2 girls makes long sessions problematic.
Seems to be a save point every 15-20minutes at least in the first 20hrs or so of the game :)
Been refreshing to see actually as I can't guarantee hours upon hours either!

Save points are very, very common in this game. I'd say that you're never more than 10 mins from one if you need to quickly save and quit.

Excellent. Just need to find a cheap price for it now...
Just fought
the boss at the end of Chapter 9.
Wow that was exhilarating :D
FFXIII might be flawed but it really knows how to do satisfying boss fights.
I've only put an hour in and people weren't joking about the linearity but I forgive it because it's probably the best looking (I know it's CG but don't care) game I've seen...

The linearity dies in the endgame, the storyline is a massive corridor though sadly. Such a shame since FF has always been about the story for me, it looks like after FFX that ideal died.
I mean, ffs, it has an endgame? All of the energy of the devs should be poured into the storyline of an FF game, it shouldn't even HAVE an endgame. It's just all wrong.
it's near enough all the same stuff that has been in every other FF game, except this time instead of having a save just before the last boss, you can come out after it and redo all the extra stuff that's always been there.

Not imo it's not. The majority of the content is in 'that' area, the storyline only takes 1/3rd of the time it takes to '100%' the game. I'd completed the story after 35 hours and that was with an hour or so of farming, that's far less than any final fantasy before it. I've now spent 20 hours in the 'end game' content and i've not even scratched the surface yet.
They've put far more effort into the sidequests etc in this game than previous, it also feels like far less has been put into the story (but then FFXII felt the same)
