View Full Version : Mit der hood
I can haz hood. I bought some repro 1932 Ford bonnet catches and fitted up a hood to the car. It came with a one piece hood made of galv steel which is really wobbly and bendy and I couldn't for the life of me work out how the old owner held it on. There's a bolt at the back and two badly fitting slots at the front which were just asking it to blow off on the motorway...
I've used some repro 1932 pulldown latches, which are the spring loaded T-bar shaped ones which hook through the sides. They work really well and as a precaution I've reinforced the front slots with washers and they wing-nut on.
It's quite nose heavy but I kinda like it. Space in there for a flathead straight 6 ;)

See the old mountings that I've bodged er, I mean beefed up with washers and added a pair of '32 catches each side:

The plan is I'm going to cut down the middle of the bonnet and hinge it as per original. There are two huge holes cut in the top that I need to fill first, then add a steel piano hinge from RS. I'm replacing the exhausts for some that run under the car and when I do that I'm going to cut the sides off this hood and remake them properly, and I'll get rid of the old wingnut mountings at the same time because they look messy.
In the meantime I have a big empty space in the garage where the hood was sat, kind of the right size space to rebuild an Anglia engine in ;)
I looks too tame now, it needs some kind of mad max style charger sticking out :D Is it me or are those rears rather slick?

Yeah they're getting a bit bald ;D
Can't afford new ones until I get paid. Ridiculously expensive tyres at £275+vat each.

You need to send me the size/make of those tyres mate as I have a very good mate who owns a big tyre & exhaust centre so can get a Trade price for you.
Ouch at those prices, but such an awesome car and well worth it. As said it's begging for a big ass blown engine.
I had the day off yesterday and decided to tackle the two holes in the hood. I also ordered a piano hinge so I could cut the hood in two and hinge it down the middle.
I should have taken some pics in progress but I forgot the camera and I was sooo excited about being in the garage I sort of just got on with it...

I got the repairs to the holes as straight as I could but they had really been butchered out so it's full of ripples. I'm not too bothered because it fits the look of the car and it's nothing a lick of filler wouldn't fix if I really wanted it straight. The hinge is plug welded from the bonnet side and I haven't ground the welds back because I wanted to leave them visible. They do look a bit like pop rivets so I'm wondering why I didn't just rivet it and be done with
I have some new headers on the way so I can put the exhaust under the car, then I can remake the sides so they fit properly.

Remind me, what exactly is under that bonnet at the moment...
It's a late flathead V8. 3.9 litres, Ford origin, been in German military service. Apparently based on a Mercury flathead but had some improvements and recast with the improvements. It certainly goes well for a flattie :)
15's pffft.
17's pfft.
21's is where it's at. I'm staking my claim to the biggest wheels on the forum.
Had my first look at the 21" wheels and I have to say I like them :D
This is with a 4.50/4.75/5.00/5.25x21 tyre (I kid ye not, this is the size written on it )

The one at the back is a true 4.50 and when I put it on the front looks a bit skinny to me:

Also got some goodies to go on, a pair of centre dump headers:

Then I had an unexpected visitor:

btw, this reminds me of the 'unloved' rod from the new audi R8 spider advert.... I know which I'd rather!!
I was going to do that ad but I use the car a lot and since some of the guys who were in it got their cars back broken, I'm kind of glad I didn't ;D
They were offering £1500 for the day though...

I really liked that advert until that revolting Audi turned up.
But surely they should have returned them in the same condition that they started in?
Yes, they have paid for repairs but you see two of the stock cars get really smashed together in the advert itself. If you watch the 'making of' video they did there's a pretty rough front-end collision which ended up in no damage because the cars are pretty tough, but you don't get to see the dark green pickup (with the black 8-ball on the roof) get the whole front end smashed off. I think they decided to keep that screw-up to themselves ;D
Got any pictures of the inside of the car, Jonny? I'd love to see the dash and controls.
Hmm, thought I'd posted a pic of the interior, clearly not. Here's you go uncle Feek :)

That's snow in the door card, it was chilly out when I took the picture :D
I've got the 4th wheel now, so I ought to go about sorting out some tyres and get this thing rolling on the skinnies.
That looks, eeermmm, comfy ;D

I count to 3... Are they siamesed, or am I missing something??

Solid and notchy with good strong springs. It's a 5 speed box with dogleg first that the racers like. Don't usually use 1st though because it's got millions of pounds of torque.

Middle two are siamesed.
