Relaunch offer for £50. Should be available in store as well.
Been having a play recently as part of some dev work and at £100 it was too much but for £50 my impulse purchase instinct is kicking in. Basically an Atom PC with a touch screen for £50! It is crippled by the Flash/flex UI (think iPhone) but can be hacked to run Ubuntu and even in standard form I can see it being a useful bit of kit.
I was tempted by one of them because I'm hopeless at remembering when I have stuff booked but apparently it can only use the O2 calendar which would mean I'd have to maintain an additional calendar which, quite frankly, I can't be arsed to do.
Now it if could hook into my iPhone calendar which is published to the interweb then I'd be sold.
Having read that a newly released firmware update allowed you to access your Google calendar, I picked up a Joggler today.
First impressions are good, it seems a remarkably solid piece of kit for £50 and after some minor faffing I've got everything from iCal syncing to my Google calendar which then appears on the Joggler.
I'm really liking the internet radio - the DAB radio in the kitchen gets quite iffy reception but this does the job nicely. The speaker is a bit crap but it'll do.
If I could mount it on the fridge (which seems the perfect place) I'd be tempted by one, but I don't believe that's possible due to the fitted stand. Is that right?
Meh - I click the link and I get this in both Firefox and Safari :(
http://www.ocukroguesgallery.com/feek/temp/Joggler-20100403-212138.png
/edit - And the same in Chrome.
The stand is a bit of a sod actually, it's fixes, both physically fixed to the Joggler and fixed at an angle so you can't change it. I've got my Joggler sitting on top of the fridge and would like to change the angle of the stand a bit to make the screen easier to read but I've had to put a couple of decks of cards under it instead. Not idea to say the least though I plan to modify the stand.
Also the power and ethernet (though I'm using WiFi) connectors are on the back of the unit so even if the stand were removable then it wouldn't mount flat to the fridge door.

First one had to be returned as it wouldn't get the new firmware, the second one has upgraded OK and internet radio etc is very good. Also have it synced up with my Google calendar. Only thing that isn't working is the Messages, is it working on yours?
Yep, the messages work fine for me.

Have you setup the O2 calendar?
No, and I don't intend to.

This sounds interesting. Weren't they even more than £100 when they first launched? Hmmm. What are the specs like and is this effectively a cheap tablet PC?
Del Lardo
05-04-2010, 12:15
Well it seems that in addition to the units that refuse to download the new firmware there are also a load of them where the messaging functionality doesn't work. Not a feature I'd ever really use and it is a software fix that will come out eventually so I'm not going to bother taking this unit back. Set it up in the kitchen last night and Mrs DL loves the Internet Radio and said that as she could listen to music she'd be cooking a lot more often. Result!

They launched at £150 and have been £100 for a few months now. The £50 offer is for two weeks only as they have launched the App store. If you think of the iPad model of a touch screen UI, Apps and a very simplified UI (so you can't get to the interesting stuff) then actually a cheap tablet PC is a pretty good description. Running an Atom N230 IIRC, the screen is 800x480 and looks pretty good IMO.

Y'know, thinking about this then if the screen even resembles a decent one then it's worth buying just to use as a digital photo frame. Anything else it can do would be a bonus. If it has the 230 chip (which is the same in some low end lappies IIRC) then perhaps it can be hacked into a full on tablet?
Bah, mine is dead! I moved it from one place in the kitchen to another and now it won't power on. The PSU is still chucking out the correct voltage.
Before it died I was very pleased with it. The screen is fantastic, not the most responsive touch screen I've ever used but it's still perfectly usable.
The speaker is a bit too quiet even on full blast so when I've got mine replaced I'll sort out a pair of amplified speakers.

Apparently it can be hacked to Ubuntu so I'm sure other operating systems would be possible.
As a digital photo frame it would be really good - the screen shows photos extremely well.

A decent photo frame will cost that, maybe even a little more so it sounds like a bargain tbh. Having said that, thanks to you and Del Lardo I'm now £50 out of pocket as I'm going to buy one now. I remember when they came out I thought it looked like a nice little device, but the asking price ruled it out. For £50 notes its a bargain.

That was basically my thinking. At £50 it is the same price as a good digital photo frame of a similar size but you get a whole load of other functionality.
Given my experience and now Burbles I am surprised that O2 have let what is clearly a product that is not really ready out to market. It must be doing a lot of damage to their brand which is exactly the opposite of what they are trying to achieve with the Joggler. Still at £50 and with a 14 day money back guarantee (IIRC worth checking in store) I am happy enough.
I'm surprised at the number of failures as the product isn't exactly new to the market. That said, I don't expect they've sold terribly well with them haivng to drop the price a couple of times.
I've boxed mine up again and will take it back tomorrow. Apparently I got the last one they had in that store so I guess I'll be getting a refund and buying one elsewhere. There is another O2 store a couple of minutes walk away so I'll head there and if not I'll order one online, though their policy of only sending it to the card holders address is a bit of a pain.

I imagine that's because of all of the naughty people buying cellphones fraudulently.
Quite possibly, but it makes it more difficult for us law abiding folks to purchase from them.

Such is the way of things.
A pain, but the alternative is forcing you to physically goto the store to buy. :(
Why did they call it the "Joggler"? It sounds like a sex toy!
Ooooh, now I am interested:-
What is this Hack the Joggler stuff? (http://hackthejoggler.blogspot.com/2009/06/what-is-this-hack-joggler-stuff.html)
The O2 Joggler is a very nice bit of hardware. It has a beautiful hi-res touchscreen, 512mb of RAM, a dual core intel atom processor and 1gb of built memory. Not to mention WiFi, ethernet and USB connectivity.
Taking the form of a digital photoframe, this device offers so much more. I have mine on top of my fridge serving all my mp3s to my kitchen hi-fi, I can look up recipes, listen to internet radio, watch videos / youtube all in my kitchen whilst I'm cooking and or cleaning. Actually I can't do any of that because O2 has CRIPPLED this device with awful software and they assume that all you want to do is use the calendar function. They haven't even included a web browser.
Dual core atom & 1gb for £50? Seems a bargain to me!
http://hackthejoggler.blogspot.com/
Sure does if you can do something decent with it :)
Just saw on a thread which probably explains why this is cheap .... is O2 getting the Ipad? Suddenly it all makes sense!

It's cheap for a far simpler reason than that but it's not something that I can discuss.

New one coming out? If you are under an NDA or something, a simple question is should I get one for £50 or wait?

Tried a couple of O2 stores who were both out of stock, so ordered from O2 online. As I said earlier, even as a digital photoframe they're well priced, so if you can get it to do more than that it's a bonus (I wanted a digi fotoframe anyway).

TBH mate, for £50 there's nothing short of "it will die 10 mins after buying one" that could make me change my mind about purchasing.
Various little tid bits of info I've picked up while having a read around. It is essentially a collection of links showing what is going on with the jogglers at the moment. I haven't explained everything below but you should see the current state of play by looking at the links yourselves. Soooo much info on this:-

There is a chap that got the touchscreen working. I have one at home waiting for me to play with.
Tempted. Photo frame and internet radio will do me nicely if they last more than 10 minutes.
If my leg holds out I may try the local store tomorrow. Any ideas when the offer expires?
You are very unlikely to get one instore. I think the offer runs till the 15th. I ordered mine online in the end.
I'm actually tempted to get another just as a net radio in the kitchen, even normal net radio's are more expensive then this! (£80 ish).
Aye - I'll probably get one online but worth checking first, just in case. Don't tempt me with a second one. ;D

TBH you'd be quids in buying one and busting it for parts. Some of the "Car PC" crowd seem to be doing this.
Still waiting for mine. Gone back to £99.99 online.

Mine arrived yesterday. Haven't got round to putting Linux on it yet, but for £50 it's a bargain even with the default OS.
Bugger - they're up at £99.99 online now.
Hopefully the shop I got mine from originally will come good and be able to sell me at least one for £49.99 but if not then I'll give it a miss.

It's looking like a Linux distro will be the first to become stable on the Joggler, but whatever "they" come up with it will be pretty cool have a proper OS running on it.
Given that the Joggler runs a cut-down linux by default anyway it's not surprising. :)
I never did make it do an O2 shop (damn leg, fatigue, etc.) but at least I got an online order in in time (even if it did say out of stock).
I'm finally back home and plugged it in. Without a shadow of a doubt, I should have got a second one at £50. There is nothing wrong with the net radio or the speakers. I had some reports that the speakers were 'tinny'. It's pretty much the same as laptop speakers.
The radio is all the bbc and all the stations that you would get on digital normally. It's a shame that they don't have all the shoutcast stations such as 1.FM. However if you installed linux then you could have all of it.
Genuinely impressed by the screen as well thus far. Nice & bright and very clean looking. For £50 you can't go wrong!
I am gutted that I didn't order an extra one. Although there is always these other tablets coming through that are meant to be damn cheap. My dad would love this for the footy.
Not sure I'll be getting one now. All depends whether O2 themselves get any more. I'll just leave the online order alone and hope for the best.
If I do get one, I've discovered it should be able to drive my Logitech V20 USB speakers. Nice bonus if I get fed up with the internal speakers.
Wohoo. Two Jogglers turned up in the post (yes, I did take the plunge and get two - maybe one home/one work or one normal/one hacking - haven't decided yet. Essentially a BOGOF then, which will do me. :)
Set up the first one and that works fine - all updated and so forth. No problems yet.
Annoyingly it only drives the 'official' USB speakers, which is a shame but not the end of the world - the built-in speaker is at least usable and you can of course use the normal speaker jack.
Random but potentially useful fact - a brief test suggests the Joggler will charge an iPhone (and you don't even get a 'not designed for iPhone' warning).

Thats odd, whats this 3.5mm jack to the right of the network port for then?
MB
Headphones/Speakers, naturally. :)
The problem with that approach is you'd need powered speakers to get any decent volume. USB powered speakers, while limited, don't have that problem (or at least the V20s don't).
PS - The speakers O2 advertise for use with the Joggler are also USB powered (though I don't know if they take audio via the 3.5mm jack - it's possible).

21-04-2010, 21:14
Hmmmmm
This is frustrating
I have an iPhone which I have synced to two calenders a) my work Exchange account b) a Google Calender via CalDAV.
Joggler can connect to either O2 Calender which is pretty much crippled and can't import/ sync anything from anywhere apart from itself. It also has Google Calender which is useful, but won't sync with my work calender. So basically I can't have the two things side by side on the Joggler. My thoughts were to try to get Google Calender to sync with Exchange but it won't do that, so I'm a bit scuppered really :/
The one calender which I use a lot, my work one I can't see on the Joggler, I'm going to go over to putting my outside work things on Google Calender but the only place where everything falls into place is on the iphone which is good but makes Joggler an Internet radio and photo frame for me not a scheduler.
MB
Apparently Exchange Sync is/was 'under consideration'. Take that for what you will - I doubt they'll do it given that it seems that a new version of the Joggler is likely to arrive soon.
Getting Google Calendar Sync working is likely to be your only option then.
Matblack
21-04-2010, 21:26
I don't think Google Calender Sync will work with Exchange and I can't install it on my work PC :(. I don't understand why Google Calender (online) won't just connect to my exchange account and drag everything in, it's a bit of an oversight.
MB
I can't find anything that suggests Google Calendar can sync directly with Outlook, so I'm not sure how that might work. Suppose it might use the route the iPhone takes (Outlook Web Access). That only works if Outlook Web Access is allowed through your work firewall.
MB - In Outlook you should be able to go to your calendar and publish it to Office online (or whatever they call it). From there you should get a URL for the calendar. if you subscribe to that calendar in Gmail does that help?
Matblack
21-04-2010, 21:53
Thanks, Exchange web access won't let me do that I'll have a look at work tomorrow :)

Do you think this is O2's effort to shift the last of their stock before the new version arrives?
Yes, it is. From the horse's mouth, so to speak.
But then again, they said that at the end of the previous offer and they've since 'found' more. :)
Mine rebooted itself Wednesday morning. I can only assume a firmware update happened.

That's my task for today, just need to work out how to get the .bin file onto a USB stick as the instructions weren't working yesterday :(
Could be an incompatible USB stick (Joggler seems to be a bit picky - though USB memory card readers seem to work quite often).
Going to try my spare 16GB Corsair Flash Voyager with mine. Fingers crossed (I'll fiddle about with the 'unused' 12GB in due course). Might consider using a USB hard disk in future.
PS - you can use USB hubs too (though I'd suggest a powered one), so giving Joggler a keyboard and mouse is a possibility - if you really want to.

Hmmm, that makes it a lot more appealing.
Whats the sound quality of it like? Would love to get an output to the amp and use it to replace the mass of cables in my playroom.
Hang on - you can install XBMC onto it?! Superb!
Speaker(s) - not sure if there's one or two - are typical laptop fare (though far from the worst laptop speakers I've come across). There's a 3.5mm headphone jack in the back though so connecting to something better is an option.
Would love to grab one but really can't justify spunking £50 on one at the moment :(

It should be using DHCP by default. Can it see the wireless network at all?

This actually looks good, wouldn't mind one for the kitchen. mp3's, calendar and view recipes on, another by the bed would be nice.
What does the hack add/do?
The hack gives you a full blown linux distribution on the thing so you can do what you want with it, not what the stock firmware thinks you should.
That's a shame, no android or other mobile os hacked yet then?
Apparently it can run Android.

I installed the Ubuntu release over the weekend, played with it for 15 minutes and got bored. It could be useful with a keyboard/mouse but then I may as well use my netbook.
http://www.jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=BBC_live is far more interesting for me and I'll be giving it a bash tonight. In the kitchen it's the perfect device for internet radio, the occasional mp3 while I do some washing up or checking the weather in the morning.
It likes to break. Think this is the 6th time I've done the initial setup.
Internet radio was really ropey on mine, but no other problems at all. Hardly used it to date though (keep meaning to 'buntu it and then use it in the office).
Finally got it to work. Quite nice. Wish there were more apps. Flickr screensaver would be nice. Having trouble getting "Connect and Play" to work with my Mac. The PS3 MediaLink software sees it but the Joggler doesn't see the Mac. So I can't share photos / music easily.

It works for me as long as the Joggler is cabled up but not when using wireless. Strange.
Using the Orb to do streaming now. Seems to work nicely. Got mp3s running and photos. Streaming music runs in the background too. Nice.
Bit annoying that I've got two media servers running now. One for PS3 and one for Joggler.
Wish the news / weather apps were better. BBC news not Sky for example.
There's another weather app on the app shop which I find better than the stock one.
Didn't like that one. UI was horrible. If you have 1 city the city list still appears at the side. Bad design.
Nice waste of screen space there.
I wonder if there's a decent OpenPeak weather application?
Pimped my Joggler. Got BBC TV on it now. Not all that smooth though. Suppose its ok if you're in the kitchen putting the final touches to dinner and Dr Who just started. The simplicity is ace.

for that price it looks interesting, only 2hour battery life and I'm not convinced the web-browsing will be fats and smooth. A couple have ordered it so will see how they find it.
Would love an Ipad but can't afford it. This maybe a stepping stone. Or used in similar way to joggler.
I would give that tablet a miss. There are meant to be various cheap ones coming in. The reason is it is only running 1.6 and a 600mhz processor won't really cut the mustard (coming from a phone perspective). Still yet to find a need for one yet though.
