Extending desktop to a TV

Yesterday a few friends came over to watch some stuff and I simply took the VGA out of this monitor and plugged it into the TV and we watched stuff from the PC just fine.

Now I have since though how good it would be if whilst sat here working I could have that as a second monitor. Trouble is now it just wont work. at all.

I've updated catalyst control centre, tried various vga cables and each monitor on each display adapter. Even the simple swapping of the cable like yesterday. Nothing works.

any ideas (cose i'm left feeling like an idiot) no idea whats up.

and before it gets mentioned... I tried various combinations of resolution and refresh rate.

Oh and on that note - its even more strange that since updating the drivers this monitor wont go to as high a res as it did before hand!?
