View Full Version : Easter shock horror: Optical Express.
Woah, close shave, I just spotted in the diary I have an eye test today! Today? Easter Monday? Surely some mistake?
Nope. Optical Express are open today and I definitely have an eye appointment. Poor staff!
I had my eyes tested on Saturday at Dolland and Aitchison and they commented then that they were open on Monday and booked pretty much solid.
I think it's disgraceful! What happened to having an Easter break?
I think it's great TBH, means I have more chance of getting my eyes tested without having to take time off work.
I needed a 5 pin DIN 180 degree, a length of single core screened and a 3.5mm jack plug. My box of bits doesn't have such stuff so I called the local electronics company to see if they were open. No reply.
I called a friend who works in the local radio shop to see if he know whether the electronics place was open or not and he said that he'd open his own shop for me to get the bits. I turned up, sorted the stuff, had a coffee, gave him two quid and came home. Now the soldering iron is warming up :)
Janet and I had our eyes tested on Friday, Josh had to have his done on Thursday after as they wouldn't give us an app't for him on the Friday. :/
Specsavers closed both Friday and Monday.

This, we are now in a 24/7 society and it makes good business sense to open on a day people have off work.
A hell of a lot of people have to work bank holidays.
Anyway how much is an eye test and how do you go about getting contacts.
Also laser eye surgery do they like 12-24months of eye tests before they operate? or can you just have one test and get done, as I haven't had mine done for years and need to go get sorted.

I was at work at Blockbuster yesterday despite every other shop in the retail park being shut :(
Standard pay too as Blockbuster is open every day of the year except Christmas Day.

I'm working today. Oxford criminals don't take the Bank holiday off...;D

Thankfully rosta means I'm off today, but worked sat night.

They just take your word for it. You ought to wait until they have been stable for a few years at the very least. Mine changed again so I'm having them monitored.

I had this one year when I worked at Accessorize. We were the only shop open in the station other than the coffee stand. I don't think a customer came in the shop until after we'd been open for 3 hours :(

You can thank the Sunday trading laws for that one I think Jen. Huuuuuge loophole. Of course, if your store is under 3000 sq ft (iirc) then you can open anyway.

Ahh that's probably why we were open then. Not sure of the size of the store but all the others in the area are huge!
Don't mind working normal Sundays (although can still happily mutter about the days when everywhere was shut :D) but we did all feel a bit cheated being the only place open yesterday. At least I wasn't working till 10pm like most of my workmates yesterday.
I remember working in Asda during Uni when they were closed on Easter Sunday but still made us work because it 'wasn't a bank holiday'. We weren't allowed to sell anything but they still forced us to come in and move stock about! Bastids!
:( That'd really annoy me!
I've just got in from work, started at 5.45am. Double bubble so was silly not to.
Ahh, I remember the joy of parental holiday shifts! Christmas dinner at 10pm!

Anyway how much is an eye test
I had one a couple of weeks back and it was 20 quid. God bless being able to claim it back on works health plan. No idea on the contact lenses thing sorry, I didn't need any type of prescription. I can ask me Mum if no one on here pops up, but I am sure someone will. :)
you just get your eyes tested and tell the optician you want contacts. Is as easy as that. Disposables on a monthly scheme range from around £11 per month to about £25 depending on the type you want/can have. Think the eye test is around £18, but I get mine for free through work, so not sure. If you work with VDUs at all you are entitled to free eye tests via your employer.
I thought eye tests were free? I'm sure we get them free every two years. I've just shelled out £200 on new glasses!
nope, eye tests are only free if you're on benefits, have a medical issue that entitles you to one for free, or via a work scheme.
You are entitled to a free sight test, paid for by the NHS, if:
you are under 16 years of age,
you are 16, 17, or 18, and in full-time education,
you are 60 or over,
you have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma,
you are 40 or over, and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma,
an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) has advised you that you’re at risk of glaucoma,
you are registered as blind or partially sighted,
you are prescribed complex lenses – these are lenses with a power of 10 dioptres or more, or prism controlled bifocal lenses,
your sight tests are usually done through a hospital eye department, as part of your care for an existing eye condition, or
you are a war pensioner and you need the sight test because of a disability for which you get a war pension.
You are entitled to full help with health costs, including sight tests, if you or your partner receive:
Income Support,
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance,
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.
You can also get a free NHS sight test if you’re entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate.
If you’re eligible for help with NHS costs under the NHS Low Income Scheme, you can claim some or all of the cost of sight tests for you, your partner and your children.
I've just done the same! £218 for two pairs, though one are reactions lenses \o/ I have stupid thick lenses too so I pay a bit more to have them thinned.

Woo and yay! :D

Alright for some :p
*eyes free prescriptions*......ohh, alright then :D

I wish someone would pass this message on to the owners of the shops here in Vejle. Despite the shops only being open from 10:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays (this catches me out every weekend), they took last Thursday off too. Out of the 5 days, the non-food shops were open for a total of 4 hours.
I'm not sure where I stand on working over bank holidays. Part of me says that we all end up doing it as a youth, so maybe it's a right of adulthood.

Oh were getting them too :D
Nearly 300 quid for me and Lom at Specsavers. :(
But I can claim 200 back from HSA and 200 back from the Hospital Saturday fund. Profit! And 2 pairs of glasses each to boot. :)

Woo and yay! :D
Yeah, baby :D
What I don't understand though, is if I was 19 and in full time education I get money off my glasses, the fact I'm 20 and in full time education I get nothing.
I think sight tests are £10 at Specsavers if you want the cheapest. I never had a problem with their prescriptions. Once you know what it is and what it looks like when it's changed you can pretty much guess your change in prescription anyway :)
£22 for the test at specsavers, didn't realise it could be any cheaper, they never said there was an option robbing baskets!!!! :p
I still find it odd how they were open and doing tests on good friday but not for kids!!
Josh is happy he has the same glasses as his uncle, close friend's daughter and also Ben off eastenders lol
