I bring this thread to you from my phone, but not Safari! Hurrah for Opera Mini

Its pretty sweet, and really quick.

The only thing i dont like at the moment (and i just noticed another) is the lack of a bookmark importer and any correction on stuff you type - I'll have to take a look at the settings!

Cool, will give it a look :)

I currently use iCab Mobile but will see if Opera is better.

Excellent, I shall give it a try later.

Shriley not! Apple approving something that is a competitor to their own app. Must have been a rush of blood to the head that let that one through.

Grab it before they pull it. Just because they've approved it today doesn't mean they'll not change their minds tomorrow as they did with WiFi scanning applications recently.

Yeah, missed out on that it seems. Could have done with a decent wi-fi sniffing tool for diagnostics purposes.

It's poop ;D

To me, it's just not usable. The way it scales down pages means you can't read ANYTHING on it so you have to zoom in anyway. Whilst it's got some nice features, I'll be sticking with iCabMobile.

I'll have to check out this iCabMobile, never heard of it

I can't believe they approved it! Go Opera!

Mark

Took you 9½ hours to catch up with an Opera mention. Slacker! :p

Reckon I'll install both and see what works. Used to like Opera on WinMo so we'll see.

What he said. I'm unimpressed.

Used to be an option for that on WinMo Opera. I'd be surprised if that option isn't still there.

Neither can I....it's crap ;D

When zoomed out, I at least still want to be able to read some text.

Opera

iCabMobile

Opera does not look like a scaled down version of the site, iCab does. When reading forums I can still find my way around and read thread titles when zoomed out in iCab, with Opera I can't see a thing and have to zoom in.

Mark

I wouldn't be able to read it either way. ;D

But I see what you mean.

LeperousDust

Yeah they need to massively tweak the zoomed out rendering but i doubt that would take that much effort on their part :)

Oh and Mark the wife is round so i'm generally only allowed a set amount of hours on the internet or near a computer ;D

Desmo, have you clicked on mobile site in the settings? I've done that and it's stopped going tiny when it's zooming out. I'm not that impressed either, but future versions may be better.

Doesn't that force loading of mobile sites rather than the full website though which sort of defeats the point of a browser which can display normal non mobile versions of websites.

I can see the appeal of this but it's not there yet. No wonder Apple passed it, they know it's no real competition to Safari :)

Mark

I think it tells sites that can display both to display the mobile site. For the rest it tries to make the layout more mobile device friendly (like Safari does to some extent).

I've heard lots of people mention Apple not passing browser due to competition but there are quite a few on the App Store so I don't go along with it.

Yes, but if he can't see it, it's not much use to him anyway!

Oooooooh, I just tried it again and noticed that tapping the bar at the top of the iPhone screen (the status bar thing) doesn't automatically scroll to the top of the page. I think Opera is the only app I've got which doesn't do that.

Mark

Wish there was a way to disable the orientation sensor (i.e. set the orientation manually and leave it that way). Opera seems particularly sensitive for some reason but it's one of my biggest annoyances in general.

It seems that opera have disabled everything that's good about the iPhone interface, and made it worse!

Pinch zooming, scroll bar jumping thing, page scaling, etc

Common consensus appears to be don't bother?

Mark

It does seem faster, but whether that's justification for the other problems (none of which I've experienced yet - though I've only used it once) is your call.

I'm not particularly perturbed by the speed of Safari being honest. I've grabbed opera and will give it a shot anyway.

It's the lack of Flash that annoys me.

Desmo
16-04-2010, 11:00
I'm keeping it installed purely for speed if I'm in a crap data connection area. Otheriwse I'm sticking with iCab :)

Mark
16-04-2010, 11:22
Is iCab worth the money? (think it was $4.99 or something).

Desmo
16-04-2010, 14:39
iCab Mobile is £1.19

I mainly got it as a Safari wouldn't allow me to post on another forum. After that, I kept it as my main browser as I prefer the way it handles multiple tabs.

I've gotten rid. It was annoying me too much, just not user friendly enough.
