This is all hypothetical at the moment
there are changes afoot at work which could mean my business mileage increasing to 15-20k a year
for me this changes the way I choose cars
what are folks thoughts on running a "beater" for work and keeping a nice car as a toy
my personal mileage is prob about 2k a year
any thoughts on practicalities/costs etc
It sounds like a good way of doing it.
Do you get a car allowance? Check the policy if you do, I know ours states that the car must be <3 years old and reflect the image of the company (or words to that effect).
It's what I would do if I had to do business miles, unless work are paying for the car.
Basically you need something that you can slide into and be comfy, quiet and not too uneconomical. You need armchairs. There must be piles of luxo barges out there like older Lexus', BMW and Merc diesels.
Depends how old you want to go. MUCH older Mercs can do stellar mileages without going wrong and look pretty cool to boot. Compared to modern ones even mint ones go for a pittance because they're out of fashion.
So maybe think about that fur coat, white hat and diamonte pimpin' stick, jive ass mutha :D

I get £462 a month allowance and 16p a mile
we did have restrictions on age of car but they have just removed them
hadnt thought of an older prestige car, was just going to get a 3 or 4 year old Mondeo and run it into ground

I run a two car system. Mundano (mkIII) for the airport runs (you can get a goodun for £2-3k) and Elise for the weekends.
It's great having a car that I don't give a crap about, it's covered in car park dints and gets washed once in a blue moon and in 40k miles all it's needed is consumables (well up until Thursday but that's for another thread).
This is exactly what I do with the Omega. It'll sit on the motorway nicely and has more than enough go to deal with berks in TDI's. Then I have the MR2 as a fun motor. I'll keep it this way going forward. There is no point having a nice motor when parking it near the general public :(
parkibg could be an issue, we can fit 3 on drive but it blocks cars in
it may involve leaving the work car on street
I assume £6-7k would get me a useable work car
the fun bit is deciding what to get for the toy :)

I have thought of both of those and if I was going to have 1 car for both jobs I would consider them, poss looking for something a bit more "outrageous" really
not sure on budget yet the longer I keep the Cayman the more I would have
at monet it would be about £30-35k for both cars but would like to get that to £40k as that would bring some nice stuff in such as a F360 or 911TT, though a F355 may be a better idea as I with a 360 I would be buying one of the cheapest ones which worries me

I'd be avoiding the Fezer option just due to the hit you'd have to take in purchase price to cover routine mantainace.
Off the wall suggestion Honda NSX?

THIS!
Would leasing a car not be covered by car allowance?

re Ferraris I need to look at maintenance costs on minimal mileage, if it is in realms of 2k a year then athst ok but much more might be a bit much if I have 2 run another car too
I know the NSX is a great car but its a bit underpowered in standard form and doesnt seem that special to me
heres my "off the wall" suggestion, Dodge Viper/GTS/RT10 :D

they were sub £35k when the economy crashed and I missed the boat, it is something I would consider but if I had to pay out £40k+ for both cars it would have to wait a while

yes but it is not that cost effective, works better to get a used car and sort everythign yourself

It's a Mondeo based kit car :p
I know they are great to drive but in real life they look tacky and don't really do a lot for me

Sounds ideal then, I'd still go for the Ultima though

dont know much about them will have a look
Think I am going to monitor mileage for a while, Cayman still only has 35k on clock so no real hurry
Missus keeps going on about a XKR but tbh I would only do that if I was running 1 car and used it for everything, while it is a fantastic all round car it lacks that certain "specialness" to make it somethign you would choose as a toy
