I don't know about you, but this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence :(

More control in the hands of Big Brother?
Fact is, they could do that in XP if they so wished.

Captain is right, recently MS have already taken simular steps in XP...I have had few people ask me what this strange message they get when booting into windows that says :
"you haven't got a ganuine copy of windows"..
"What is that about then?"
"Hmm you haven't got a genuine copy of windows" lol
Features are disabled if you don't apply for a pucker licence.

Very true, Microsoft have just made it so that if you want to get updates to your copy of Windows XP you need to download and install it's "Genuine Advantage" tool, well ok about the genuine but where is the advantage? In fact I turn off the remind me of updates button as it just irritates me frankly and I can generally get the copy of XP stable enough without Microsoft trying to hold my hand all the way through.
If you do make the mistake of installing it(and you are naughty enough not to have a genuine copy of Windows, tsk tsk and all that ;)) then use the System Restore tool to roll back to the point before you installed "Genuine Advantage" and you won't get reminded again. I love that you can knock the whole thing on the head with a tool Microsoft gave you :D

haha nawty boy :D
lol at the advantage - you are right :D where is the advantage?
It's only the Genuine Advantage Notification Tool that causes that. Genuine Advantage itself just stops you downloading stuff (and is, by contrast, mostly harmless).
None of my PCs have the notification tool, even though they're all legit.

Ah yes, sorry that is what I meant. I do own a legitimate copy of Windows I hasten to add but since my PCs are only switched on one at a time I don't see the point in buying multiple copies, I'd argue that I am effectively using only one copy of Windows so I should only need one licence. I am aware of exactly how much water that argument holds though and in legal terms it is about as waterproof as a sieve.
I just didn't install the Genuine Notifiaction bit when it popped up. All other updates have just carried on as normal.

I've been reading that DX10 is only going to be available with Vista and there is no backward compatibilty with DX9.. wtf?
Lies. Games developers would never stomach that.
Or maybe not, knowing Microsoft.

was what i was reading in PC gamer last night.. unless I'm reading in wrong.. I guess they are forcing the issue.. They know that this is a gamers OS and gamers will want to upgrade to DX10, which will require a new GC. So I guess there thinking is why not make it an exclusive to Vista.
Apparantly, the API interfaces are much simpler in DX10.. It wouldn't make much sense for rapid program development in DX10, then to re-code the same procedures for backward compatability.. I'm not sure how existing games are going fair up.
time will only tell.
That really will be a pain if I have to dual boot XP and Vista (eventually). I won't be upgrading my servers/other family machines to Vista though, it would cost an absolute packet... they will be getting linux.
IIRC the new farcry is meant to be vista only, as is supreme commander? That will royally pee me off as we will be getting ripped off to upgrade for this. All the gfx card manufactorers are going to deliberatly keep the price up and shaft the consumers :(
I've already decided not to upgrade at all. At least not for a while. XP is good enough for me, and if it ain't broke...

My thoughts exactly! But there is probably some games that they are going to deliberatly make vista only
Just to prove the point - some of my machines are still running XP Service Pack 1. :)
