Hey all, does anyone know anything about KitchenAid mixers? I was thinking of investing in one for some heavy duty dough mixing now I make my own bread. I knew they were expensive but I got a bit of a shock when I saw they were £385 in John Lewis :eek:

Well if that's what they cost then that's what they cost, but I've looked online and it looks like there's a couple of models which appear to be identical. Only hitch is the prices range from about £140 right up to £400. Anyone know if there is actually a difference or is it just the department stores cashing in on mugs like me?

I don't necessarily have to go for a KitchanAid one, but there don't seem to be any other brands that are the same quality or durability. Any recommendations for heavy duty mixers appreciated, domestic or professional and I don't mind second hand :)

Edit: I guess one reason I'm posting this is because I might get a KitchenAid secondhand on eBay, but I don't want to bid £250 for a machine that doesn't actually cost that much to buy new :/

Shame it's all in American but translating isn't too hard. So it looks like John Lewis are selling the Artisan (which is the entry level model) for the same price as online places sell the more professional appliances.

Edit: the caveat being the online places are shipping them from America and they are 120V :mad:

I know nothing about the KitchenAid ones. Is the only brand you'll consider? My Mum has an old Kenwood one that she's had since she got married (30+ years) and it's still going strong. Don't know if the quality of the modern ones is as good, but worth a look. They do a couple of different ranges. The Kenwood Chef range looks good.

magimix is one brand I hear good things about but they are expensive

Haven't read all thread, but price difference on same model is down to the amount of attachments you get.

We have a KitchenAid mixer at home, Kari got it for her birthday, and her mother has one as well. It's decent, solid and hardworking from the looks of things. They certainly didn't pay anything near that amount for it though.

They are ridiculously expensive over here. The nearest competitor seems to be commercial machines, unfortunately.

have you looked at American stores and using bundlebox to ship it over. Some-things are far cheaper in the states, even after shipping and fees.

Yes, the problem is they use 120V out there and I don't know if the machines are able to switch between the two voltages.

ask Darren what it says on the plug/unit. If he sees one when out and about. I found most things these days are 110/230 compliant.

Bah, missed it ;D

There's a new Kenwood stand mixer out, in the kMix range, which I have to say might be a bit better than the KitchenAid:

It's pretty much the same ie. a big heavy cast metal stand-mixer, but it's got a timer and it's about £80 cheaper. As long as it's reliable like older Kenwood gear I think this is the one for me.
