First thing to say is that UFO:Enemy Unknown is my favourite game ever. EVER.
But none of the sequels have ever come close to the original for me. So when I read there was a new X-COM game in development I was a bit meh.
Then I read it was a being buit as an FPS and I was ready to completely dismiss it.
Then I read it was being developped by 2K of Bioshock fame and I got kind of interested.
Then I read it was being set in 50s America and I started to buzz a little bit.
Then I watched the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdVb4UnqO7A) and I am now officially amped. :D

Hell yes, loved the originals. As you say the latter sequels where pants.
That looks awesome and glad they have not gone realistic.
But please tell me there is still the ship/weapon research, the base developments and so forth.

Hmmm. Not sure about it.
I have all the X-Com games and love the first 2 in particular. The others aren't as bad as many made out, they just aren't as good as the originals.
Hopefully it'll be not just good, but great.

I'm upset as they appear to have moved away from their classic aliens again... No sectiods, Floaters, Etherals....
Reckon that would have made for a better game. These aliens are just completly different :(

Sorry to rain on your parade but it's not developed by irrational games (a development studio owned by 2k) of bioshock fame, it's developed by 2k Marin (another, different development studio) of Bioshock 2 fame which was far less impressive and already had the fantastic character design and atmosphere ready made for them.
I think it's gonna be pants personally. Or at least, nothing like an xcom game, it's like farcry 2 in that it's just a game using an established franchise name to help boost sales.
I loved the original XCOM Games, this - well it looks kinda impressive with its cell-shaded graphics but I don't see any Greys running around. I'll wait and see I think...

2K's demo kicked off with the player arriving back at the XCOM HQ, stepping out of a vintage car into a busy-looking hangar packed with crates. As we approached the base entrance several staff underlings popped up to give Carter brief reports and updates; one woman mentioned that the head of research had requested his presence in the lab. Further into the building we came to a large room dominated by a map of America. This, it turns out, is effectively the mission select screen. XCOM isn't large enough to fight every battle on every front, so it falls to Carter to decide where the team prioritizes its efforts. Each mission affects the base in a different way: rescue outings are important for maintaining public support, while other trips might help your team to conduct research or to gather supplies like Elerium - the alien element that powers some of the game's strongest weaponry. You can't afford to neglect any of these considerations, but there isn't time to answer every call - so when you ignore one task in favour of another, it might have disappeared from the map by the time you get back.
Yes Yes Yes, base and research in the game, this is going to be totally awesome.
