Having a clear out, I must say, the Maxtor HD's took a lot more punishment than the Sammy, but the best ones where the old zip tapes, unscrew or prise the top off and you can just slice the disc up.

Wish I had a proper sledge hammer.

Just to warn you, unless you have physically smashed the hdd platters then data could still be got off them. Cd's just go through the shredder :)

I'm used to being able to snap CDs in half (though will admit it's hard). Tried that on a Verbatim DVD+R and it shattered into about a hundred pieces. Won't be trying that one again! ;D

PS - Can't see your pic! :(

I got to the platters for a couple of them, maybe I better give the others another go. Probably best to avoid hacking the neighbours off any more tonight.

Wish I'd thought of the shredder before spending well over an hour breaking CDs in half with gloves on and getting bits of CD all over the garden, though dunno if it can hack CDs it's only got a little area for cards.

DVDs were the easier ones, some of the older CDs wouldn't break. Had to actually bend them back and forth about 10 times and rip them apart. But I did use break them inside the bag inside a box to try and limit the splattering somewhat.

You sure on the pic? Shows in IE for me too.

Surely it would have been easier to just unscrew them and then bust up the platters? :p

I just put a drill through them - works well

That's what I was going to suggest. Think that's how it's often done in the industry (unless you have a giant blender handy - of course it will blend!)

Hehe - just don't drink it! :p

Putting it in a bonfire works remarkably well too - but it has to be right in the middle at the hottest point.

I don't have a drill :( Tried a nail but didn't want to go in. I did have a really old Quantum one which had screws, undid them and just the one platter, very odd.

I need to borrow a drill actually, might be worth waiting.

I use old HDD platters as coasters. Mmmmm shiny!
