Tada, creme de la creme of the current android crop, looks stunning, i'm just not sure if its possibly too big...

This will be my first full touch screen phone and i'm selling on my e52 to pay for it, whilst its totally trustworthy amazingly connected to my google account and backup perfectly etc... I'm just missing playing. I want a touchscreen phone to play properly, i just hope i don't miss my keypad too much, although swype has somewhat changed my mind about ever typing again... We'll see, it plays quake pretty damn good anyway (here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpP5QljEqow&feature=player_embedded))...

Pros for and against, anyones idea and opinion welcome, i'm seriously thinking of pushing the button tomorrow. Naughty really since i've just bought myself a new DJ controller (VCI-100) as well :o But i promise i'll be good from now on ;D

Leon got one of these last week and he really likes it. It is bigger than my iPhone, but that means that the screen is sharper and it's incredibly light. I'm sure he'll be along soon to bang on about how amazing it is :p

Techradar have a comparison (http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/htc-desire-vs-iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-702739) of the iphone4 vs the HTC Desire vs the Galaxy S. The Desire just about wins with the iphone4 a close second. However although I have a Desire I think I'd go with the Galaxy S myself now, just for that lovely screen. As long as Samsung support Android 3 when it comes out (which it should do, the specs are up to it) it's the best long-term option imo.
Either way, you're not going to be disappointed :)

Hmmm so they put the samsung down on Apps (which i don't agree with) Camera (which i still don't care about - its good enough) and Internet (They're having a laugh). I dunno i don't massively agree with that review having read what else i've read! I know buying android means sooner or later i'll be able to root it one way or another and do whatever I (well the devs at xda-devs) want with it giving me ultimate freedom. Sim free at £329 seems a ruddy bargain for it. I'm just worried ARM coretex A9 processors will come around sooner rather than later and **** about all over my little hummingbird processor, which seems to beat snapdragon by a fair margin right now

Shame the Pro isn't coming over here as I'd grab that immediately.
I want a large high res screen and a hardware keyboard!

Although it is mighty tempting.

what's android like these days.

I didn't want the iphone and resisted for ages, but the UI just makes it so nice (well use to before the stupid update). So now thinking of updating. But still put of by earlier android and pretty much all phones being slow compared to the iphone. Would get about £150 for the iphone.

Well i dropped the big ones on it today, and yeah its as amazing as i thought. Shame they used a plastic back though, feels a little cheap on a fairly expensive phone. It's still probably half the price of most iPhones on the market, but (IMHO) much much better, and DIFFERENT! I don't want to be another person with an iPhone, especially when everyone i see is like "ooooh you've got an iphone, now thats a good phone" and i'm suddenly amazing, when they have no idea what a "good" phone would be :p

//Rant haha

Conclusion: Superb, materials aren't as premium, but the screen is just wow. Dot pitch is less than the iPhone4 but brigthness and otherwise clarity of SuperAMOLED is unsurpassed!

Until you get it outside.

I really love the phone, love the screen and feel of them (played with one on Friday), but they don't cope well under bright sunlight.

I thought superAMOLED was more appealing in sunlight? AMOLED is a problem i know, the superAMOLED goes some way in solving that...? Numbers i hear branded about:

20% brighter screen
80% less sunlight reflection
20% reduced power consumption

It's absolutely ****ing is down right now, so theres no way i could test it ;D;D

Good choice, I love mine. Mine seems fine in sunlight? I thought that was one of the main advantages of SuperAMOLED.

I've got used to Swype now, it would be very hard to go back to normal texting.

Screen is sex.

Camera is far from awful.

Totally agree :) Could use a flash though, not for pictures but just for general use a flash is nice to have...

Currently faffing and updating and using a modded rom to squeeze every last bit of power out of this thing. Also waiting patiently for the 2.2 update so i can rock flash 10.1 properly :)

The screen has to be seen to be believed, the iphone4's is without a doubt nice, but this is something special. Everyone who's seen it its the first thing they've commented on...

Ok so i couldn't be more impressed with this phone right now, Leon i don't know how much you've looked into it, but i massively suggest you first update to samsung latest firmware, then install the modaco r3 ROM and buy a years worth of wavesecure. This phone flies faster than before (new firmware and rom) and is totally trackable and remotely lockable/recoverable in SO many ways its untrue, all baked into the rom and essentially unremovable... I'd never used android properly, but the more i play the more i'm impressed at the polish of this product.

Pah! You should have bought an iPhone then complained about it on Twitter (http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2010-07/23/samsung-galaxy-s-iphone) ;)

LeperousDust

Wow, that seems a pretty good deal, but buying an iPhone4 for a samsung is still quite an expensive way of going about things, although i would have an iP4 left over i guess it would shift :p

I will say (although having no experience of how bad the iP4 can be) i wouldn't rate the reception too high on this device, but i'm still much more inclined to blame o2 right now than the phone since most people i know who actually use their phone for more than texting/phoning stuggle without wifi around these parts of Edinburgh... At work i manage a moderately strong GPRS signal, but i work right in the middle of the west end in the city centre, where is my 3G dammit? I don't want to be leeching off the poor wifi from the hostel across the road!

Time will tell as this 12 month contract runs out in october and i'm trying vodafone next :)

Heh, you moved from a keyboard to a touchscreen, I'm looking to move away :D

Keeping an eye on the Droid 2 myself. Played with one of these this week though and was pretty impressed with it :)

23-07-2010, 20:38
Yeah i said i never would! I loved my keypads and was always very hapy on having them, but swype changes that totally with android! Its still got its disadvantages i can't agree more but playing with a big touchscreen when im bored makes up for them! Theres a galaxy S Pro thats the same but slightly thicker with a full slide out qwerty i must say i was tempted to wait!

This Android stuff is all pretty new to me, but I flashed the latest leaked firmware last night and the lag is cut right down. I'll look at some custom ROMs later.

Latest leak i havent tried but if you get the JG5 you can use modacos R3 custom rom which is pretty special i think :)

I'm still waiting for a fully baked modaco rom, and more importantly samsung to just release froyo :p

Well months down the line and i'm still more impressed with what this phone has to offer than any other phone i've ever used. Even moreso now i've properly updated the firmware with googles latest offerings but baked by a homebrewer into something truly special. Anyone with this phone, Leon mainly (!:p) grab Darky's V8 Mod from xda Devs. Little bit of trouble with the first flash over previous ROM's etc... but once you're using his updating is as easy as it gets :)

The phone absolutely FLIES and personally i really do think totally outclasses all its competition. Which would be why google have chose the Galaxy S for the next Nexus :)

Aye, as much as I love my Desire I wish I'd waited a couple of months and got the Galaxy S, the ones I've seen are amazing. Glad you're enjoying yours :)

Now we need to start some sort of Wordfeud tourney.

Upgraded to Darky's v8 the other week - as you say, bit sticky at first, I got caught in an infinite boot loop in recovery mode - managed to get into Clockwork and run the ROM update again and bingo - loving it!

I did the same and had similar problems. I tried to install the non wipe slim version but it would get to the setup wizard at the start and fail over and over. I ended up installing the full wipe version (didn't have that much on the phone anyway) and had success. Must say I'm quite impressed with it. Ta for the recommendation Alex :)

Hi guys, i'm thoroughly dragging this post right back from the grave! But, if any of you haven't yet moved to CyanogenMod7, i sincerely recommend you do! It couldn't be any easier than downloading an app "Rom Manager" (and paying a few quid for the premium which i also recommend).

This is providing you have already rooted your phone and have CWM2/3 installed, which if you're running most other roms you probably will :)

Just done it. Was thinking about moving away from Darky's ROM anyway as the phone was a bit slow and laggy.

Bit of a faff tbh.
Tried to switch using ROM manager (which I already had) but it did nothing. Had to copy the zips to the SD card and do it in recovery mode. Then Titanium backup wouldn't work - finally sussed out it needs busy box (didn't need it with Darky's ROM). Then it still wouldn't work until I rebooted the phone. Finally got everything restored (except photo editor - for some reason it just hangs trying to restore that ). Will see if it's any better.

Absolutely not true...I'm on android, not rooted or jailbroken or anything, no fiddling or tweaking and i'm MORE than happy with the performance. Nothing to do with whether it's an android/windows/iphone, it's what you're doing to it that counts.

Will you don't need to fiddle, my girl has an s2 and just uses it and refuses to do anything to it. it does work fine. But personally i'd want more from it, which would be exactly the same as an iphone, iphone works, but its fairly limited.

The s2 is rootable and unlockable and flashable to CM7, i don't know the exact method because i'm not allowed to play with my girlfriends phone :p But just browse around xda and CM7 forums and just play!

Well well worth it, the speed and customisation are second to none with CM7, blown away by it! Battery drain seems a *little* higher than it was, but nothing that i can't live with i guess, given it's superbness, and its getting better all the time (it used to be unsuable :p)

Ok it's finally stable, it was for me anyway, but the actual stable official binary is out. Go fourth download and be surprised at just HOW good your phone is, even though it was released over 15 months ago! Really wondering why i'm considering dropping some new bones on a Nexus Prime right now =/ Phone is flying...

I have succumbed to the temptations of the S2

Toby
23-10-2011, 16:42
Whilst I can reach the far left edge of the screen, it is a bit of a stretch and those with smaller hands would find it even more of a problem.

TBH it's too big for me. Whilst the screen is awesome when watching videos or web-browsing, I rarely do either of these on my phone and thus prefer something smaller and more 'pocketable'. The S2 is a good phone but just too damn big tbh.

Note I'm not getting into an Android/iOS debate here, just commenting on the physical size :)

I have tiny girly hands :p, and I find it easy now. Took a little while to adjust but as a lot thinner than iphone, actually think it's easier now.

Internet & video/audio/photos are so much clearer than iphone, even 4s I think, and thats what I mostly use it for.
