A thread for all the dancers out there, from poley pole to tip tappity toe dancing!

A few months back I started doing Burlesque dancing which scared the pants off me (not literally although that would have probably been a good start really considering ;)) But yeh, thought screw it and was dragged along by a friend and it's absolutely hilarious! Nothing like what I thought. Very much tamer and just silly dance routines and learning how to kerfuffle about in heels. Performed in a charity gig a few weeks back which raised £1800 (yaaaaaaay) and despite absolutely bricking it, I'll be doing it again! I tell you what though, I will never listen to Santa Baby in the same light again!!

Because I like it so much, I want to be able to better myself a bit in my dancing skills sooo... after talking with a few dance teachers I'm taking up Ballet!

For whoever knows me, the two above (considering the issues I have had for a number of years and my personality) are most probably the two LEAST likely things you would put me against.

Me... ballet?! Tall, long uncoordinated limbs, very little dancing skills, not stick skinny (particularly after chrimbo) and silly. I foresee much comedy in my lessons! Feel free to point and laugh! I'm half tempted to video record each lesson because I just think it's going to be sheer comedy!

My eventual aim is to get enough skills to be able to perform decent fun burlesque routines with magic! I think it could be a winning combination! I've already played about with a more serious routine which involves Muse - Time Is Running Out and getting out of a straight jacket. Needs a lot of work and playing with but it's going to look awesome!

Fun times!

So! I will update with dancingness as I go along when I can! Burlesque wise, this week we've been told to bring washing up gloves, a pinny and a feather duster! Ooo Err Missus! Hahahaha! Should be a laugh!

You sound like the next Darcey Bussell in the making :)

My ex is a ballerina. She trained at Rambert school of ballet when it was part of Brunel, moved abroad and now has a permanent contract with Norwegian National Ballet. I haven't spoken to her for years but she was originally strictly classical ballet and does a bit of contemporary dance now.

I got roped into dancing once, a charity ballet. I wasn't very good though, I simply wasn't strong enough to haul her around and I couldn't remember choreography to save my life ;D

Sounds like fun Pheebs.

I started burlesque a few weeks ago and I'm loving it. We did a performance on our final week of beginners class - just to the rest of the class, and my tutor couldnt find anything about my routine to criticise, although I know I can improve it.

Our next performance is Feb 4th and I will be auditioning for a place. If I get through, I might even invite some of you along :)

I did disco and ballroom for years and years, took a shed load of exams, won trophies in competitions, did dance shows and presentations... I miss dancing :(

Took up salsa dancing a while back, but then moved away and havent found another one since, was brilliant for keeping fit and toning up.

Would love to give burlesque a try, but again, dont think there is anywhere nearby that does it :(

Yeah I did all the Latin and Ballroom exams too... won loads of medals. Miss it and doing the shows. :(

I tried Salsa but couldn't help doing Latin instead to the music :p i.e. other Latin not Salsa.

Tried CeRoc too but couldn't get on with that either.... to the Googlez!! :D

I know its not the same thing, but I am trying Zumba when the leisure centre introduces it in a month or so... Id rather dance for the fitness element now though :)

Oh I have done Zumba - its... weird :D I felt like a tribal warrior dancing round a camp fire ha ha... good workout though - take some 1kg weights with you for toning :)

I don't think I will go back though because it was £11 for a 1.5hr class and the instructor was a little odd :/

This, my dear is genius. I've been so excited about this since you mentioned it (and was SURE I'd commented although I haven't :/ - old age) because I think there's a huge gap in the market for this, well, for YOU actually. I can just see it - I've been planning to enter you into Britain's Got Talent when you're ready, I hope that's ok ;D

I am performing at the burlesque show here on the 4th Feb. With 4 other girls, we are doing a circus themed act, and I'm the tiger. Rawr.

If anyone is interested - I'm not flashing my baps so happy if people want to come :p Tickets are a tenner.

BB xIt was £20 an hour when I gave it up. Two sessions a week, when you earn £120 a week becomes kind of stupid.

I do miss dancing ocassionally, but by the end it was too expensive, and I just wasn't enjoying it as much any more. Still remember most of it mind.

BURLESQUE tonight! Yay!

I tried ballet the other day. That... was HILARIOUS. I looked like a complete moron! So so funny! I was crying with laughter! Will explain at a later date.... I'm getting more bendy though! I'm getting closer and closer to touching my head with my footsies whilst led belly down on the floor! A fair way to go... I think it's my back to be honest that's holding me up! Need a more bendy back! Wheeeeeeeeeeee!

Right! OUt go go go go go go!

Woo, did my first performance last night and I'm still buzzing!

Had a relaxed day as I only work til 11:15 on a Friday, so had a bit of a sleep, bath and packed. Phil and I had decided to stay in a hotel for the night so he dropped me off at the theatre and went to check in. I felt quite special just walking into the theatre, as I had some casual dance wear on, and my hair done. I was having my make up done there.

Our act was four of us doing a circus style performance, I was the tiger. Before our performance we were allowed to mingle but not in costume, so I had taken my beautiful ball gown, which, whilst checking out the stage, I found was uv reactive!!

Our act was due at 8:45, with the show starting at 8:15. Just before the start of the show, our first part of the act had boyfriend troubles, and I was a bit worried she wouldn't be able to perform! At 8:30 we started to warm up, and went to wait in the wings. Then the girl who was our last act had a moment of panic and said she couldn't do it! A few talks from us and our mentor and she managed not to run away! I was totally fine, in fact just ultra excited. The show was a sell out, over 100 people, and I knew Phil was in the third row.

We lined up in the wings and waited for our introduction. The crown went wild and it was so, so easy to play up to them. The first girl forgot a few parts of her routine but not so anyone would notice... Then it was my turn. It was amazing. The crown were whooping and cheering and I just strutted my routine, adding in some bits that I felt the audience wanted! I couldnt stop smiling! The end of my act was a crawl towards the front of the stage, and blow a kiss, fortunately, I spotted Phil so blew my kiss at him. The third girl was fab, and the fourth girl also managed her routine whilst looking fab!

We were cheered off the stage (definitely the longest cheer we had heard!) and went back to the green room completely elated. It wasn't long to the interval so I kept in costume and went to find Phil. As I walked through the bar, I was stopped by so many people saying they loved my act, it was like being famous. I was interviewed for the DVD of the production too!

At the start of the second half, I started to feel really, really ill. I thought it might be the corset so I went and put my ball gown back on, but was worried I'd be sick. I literally felt like that all the way to the end of the show

Once it was over, Phil and I walked to the taxi rank, and I started to feel better. I realised that in the room we were waiting in to go onto the stage was the fuel for some of the fire props people were using, and I react very badly to the smell of fuels. So fortunately that's all it was!

Definitely going to carry on with this and do a solo next time

Currently putting together two performances for Burlesque although for the next 2-3 weeks this may be a bit slower due to having to complete various things in the house to ensure it can be sold come May.

Enjoying ballet a great deal too. I'm having issues with my back and shoulder at the moment due to being over worked postie wise (also the fact I am doing steps and hills all day for 4-5hours minimum and then forget to stretch after, my leg muscles are getting tighter! Not good!) Going to try and find another part time job which is closer and 2-3days only and not a killer physically! Don't want to be damaged!

But yeh, the next 2-3 weeks as said are manic so both dancing will be on hold temporarily (will try to get to the odd class). I will also be strictly dieting as of tomorrow as I want to get to a better weight for ballet. I'm waaaaaay too bulky at the moment. Annoyingly so much of it is muscle (especially legs... god knows how I can shake that if at all!)

Will never be a pro or near it but just want to be good at it. Would love to get to points! WOW! Hahahaha! Who knows, maybe in the future!

Happy days :)

I wasn't down for this show tonight as we are racing tomorrow, but have just been contacted to see if I know anyone willing to stage hand as they have been let down. Phil took a bit of persuading and I'm going as a walkabout performer! Yay!

I did it - I did it!!! I have just done my first solo performance!!!

You were bloody fantastic- I've been to some noisy gigs but I can't remember the last time I heard a crowd go so wild! I couldn't hear my own cheers! :D

You were even better than I thought you would be and the only downside was that I was acting bag carrier whilst you were lavished with praise and fans for AGESSSSSSS haha!

Can't wait to see you up on stage again - as the compere said - I have a feeling we'll be seeing a whole lot more of Cherry Blush! :)
