When they work they can be brilliant when they don't they can also be youtube gold. Let's have a thread.
You might find listentoyoutube.com useful. ;)
Dizze Rascal covers That's Not My Name (Ting Tings)
KgjF1zM6wEY
Pixie Lott does a glorious version of Use Somebody

I'm not usually much for DnB but this Dexcell mix of Ellie Goulding is a blinder

Metallica live in Moscow. 1991, The Cold War is still thawing. Look at the massed ranks of uniforms trying to keep those crazy soviet metalheads back! Rock 1 - Politics 0

I think this covers the first three and is just a really nice, faithful version of the original.

Also shows that Noel is by far a better singer than Liam.
Strangely enough I was listening to those two just the other day, great stuff...

There is a great DJ who for the past few years has been doing a mashup of the Billboard (US) top 25 singles of the year:
LLA7JMPE_xU
iNzrwh2Z2hQ
It's fascinating how well he manages to blend cross-genre and subject together and creates a masterpiece.

Mashing up 25 songs is just nuts.:D I wonder how many I could name without the video.
goodblimey.com is a great site to look for mash-ups, especially Beastie Boys ones.
What a Girl Wants is Rock and Roll and Are You Gonna Be Love Machine are two of my (non Beastie) favourites

(Sorry no youtube for the second)
I'm a fan of covers that have some form of creative musicality to them opposed to someone simply playing someone elses song in the same fashion... I have many covers I think are ingenious variations, and others who just sound fantastic :) A couple of them are:
Johnny Cash cover of 'Hurt' by NIN.
Jamie Cullum cover of 'High & Dry' by Radiohead.
Jamie Cullum "The Singin' Umbrella": an acoustic mashup of 'Singin' in the Rain' by Gene Kelly with 'Umbrella' by Rihanna.
Korn cover of 'Inbetween Days' by The Cure: MTV unplugged live acoustic performance ft.Robert Smith.
The Starting Line cover of 'Im Real' by JLo/Ja Rule: Hillarious Phillidelphia pop-punk cover of modern R&B chart poop!
Metallica cover of 'Dust to Dust' by The Misfits: not a particularly creative cover of the original but a great opportunity to produce a cracking song in contrastingly good recording quality.
Marilyn Mason cover of Tainted Love by Gloria Jones: Soft Cell did it, then MM made it Filtheh! :D
Deftones cover of 'Simple Man' by Lynard Skynard.
Thin Lizzy cover of 'Whiskey in the Jar' by The Dubliners.
Jeff Healey cover of 'while my guitar gently weeps' by The Beatles.
These'll keep you lot going for a while ! ;)
Johnny Cash cover of 'Hurt' by NIN.
That cover makes me cry.
In a good way.

Jamie Cullum is pretty damn good, actually...

That "Wind Cries Mary" is just superb. Wow.
I've been fond of his random covers for a while, but that's probably about the best.
For our wedding I had Everlasting love played:
f3tROimHbuo
I think it was for the arrival of the flower girls and bridesmaids.
We walked out to How Sweet It Is (http://video.nl.msn.com/watch/video/michael-buble-how-sweet-it-is/4zxg3t72) covered by Michael Bublé. An interesting cover, doesn't particularly add anything to it for me, but Kari loves his stuff and we wanted something up-beat and lively for our exit music :D
Listening to a load of old Biffy Clyro covers; if you're a purist for original material then these will not be for you.
Nevertheless, if you like a bunch of musicians taking the essence of a song they like, and recreating it in their own way then you might enjoy some of the following...

Here you go Grandad ;)
I am nothing without pretend
I know my faults
Can't live with them
I am nothing without a man
I know my thoughts
But I can't hide them
I still keep my baby teeth
In the bedside table with my jewelry
You still sleep in the bed with me,
My jewelry, and my baby teeth
I don't need another friend
When most of them
I can barely keep up with
I'm perfectly able to hold my own hand,
but I still can't kiss my own neck
I wanted to give you everything
but I still stand in awe of superficial things
I wanted to love you like my mother's mother's mothers did

I've never heard anyone so expertly strip all heart, feeling and urgency from a song before. :/
Try this one for size then:

The zither isn't really on my list of instruments I like, but I do admire the technical aspects of this. They've done a great job.
