SDHC Compatiblity

Evening,

I've got an SDHC 32gb (class 2) card for my car. I know its compatible with my head unit, but what I did expect is I'm having trouble with it on my mac or PC.

My card reader simply wouldn't read it, it detected it & turned the light on but didn't mount the volume. (Vistas pops up the installing, says ins installed & ready, and then gives the option to eject the device from the tray. It doesn't appear in My Computer though)

I put it in my S90, that formats it fine, saves photos to it, and when connected via usb to the PC I could see the volume, but not write to it.

Do these HC cards require a new card reader? With it being class 2 (2mb/s required) I thought USB 2.0 readers would be fine.

Yes SDHC is different to SD and requires a compatible device to read and write to it, an older card reader, especially if it was just a cheap one, will probably not be able to do so.

The number of my friends who have ended up having to take back SDHC cards because their SD devices can't cope is quite surprising, I don't think it's made anywhere near clear enough that despite having basically the same name, the same size, the same shape etc. that many devices can't actually use them.

Admittedly it costs twice as much from Tesco, but at least I've got it & can get 32 (29) whole gigabytes of music in my car for tomorrow :)

Yes, SD, SDHC, and SDXC all use slightly different electrical signalling, so you need a reader designed for them. There's also a recent Windows update for 32GB+ cards.
