View Full Version : Potholes
Just had the 2 front coil springs replaced on the Picasso at £316 inc the new rate of V.A.T. Happy New Year from Citroen.
On the way to work tonight, I hit Nothampton County Councils new in road spelunking amenities which has broken one of the new springs and shredded the tyre while it was at it. And it was the newest tyre on the car too. :(
Out of my civic duty (and because potholes.co.uk says it's best to report a pothole if you're going to make a claim) I have let N.C.C. know they need to be filled in.
Glad I was in the bus and not on a motorbike, I reckon it'd be very different on 2 wheels.
It was bad enough on 3...
(A422 in Farthinghoe towards Brackley, just before the speed scamera if anyone's going that way)
Lots of them about right now. There was one near M4 J10 yesterday morning that had already got at least four cars by 9AM.

My journey to and from work is fast becoming a game of "dodge the pothole" again. There are some stretches of road where there isn't a single hole. Whatever they made that road surface from (whatever the cost) they need to reproduce that elsewhere instead of filling holes in, because all thats happened this year is last years covered up holes, have just opened up again.
Funnily enough I've noticed more recently. Even on smaller side roads there seem to be more about at the moment.
'The Big Freeze' caused havoc around our house. 1 particular pothole was enormous & took about 20% of on lane. Then there's the enormous double speed bumps on our road because its still a building site so not had the road finished. They've broken the 2 front coils of my mums car because my brother can't drive sensibly!

Trouble is, as I'm sure we all know, water gets into the cracks in the surface, that freezes up, expands and breaks the tarmac apart. To fix these problems, they really need to resurface the whole road. Just dropping in some muck and getting some school leaver to whack it into place with a stick is only going to leave large cracks around the edge, which makes it easier for that hole to come back next time it freezes.
Because this is the way most councils fix the roads, we now have new potholes from the last snow, mixed with the potholes from the last lot all opened up again.
A couple of years ago I went to KwaZulu Natal in South Africa for a holiday. We went from the Drakensberg Mountains cross country via Isandlwana to the coast and obviously apart from the unsurfaced roads at Isandlawana and Phinda Game Reserve, the roads over there are better quality than here.
I hit this bastard last night, in the dark

Went back this morning to get decent photos. Car is in the garage being repaired, £220 worth of damage.
Am now going through the proper channels to get the money claimed back from the council and/or Highways Agency.
I am fine, just scared me to death hitting it at 40mph!
Yep, the roads are looking a bit sorry for themselves. I'm surprised I haven't obliterated a bike tyre yet.

Would have cost you £309 at the old rate...

I was tempted to take a pick of the massive square pot hole round the corner from me (Outside where Jesters used to be for locals) You should see the size of it, Well you will as I will take a pic on next pass. It's some Bodged repair of the road after the water board fixed a pipe, The whole repair looks like it's sunk an inch or so leavign a lovely sharp piece to cut/shread tyres.

I'm glad I was only doing 20, I reckon if I'd have been going any faster, I may have ended of on my roof.
Glad to hear we're all coming out the other side of potholes unscathed (apart from in the wallets...)
Ouch. Glad you're OK and hope the claim doesn't get too troublesome.
The M4 J10 repair lasted about 36 hours. No wonder the Highways Agency don't agree to come on BBC Radio Berkshire. :)
The m25 is a joke. Where the roadworks are heading towards the bridge southbound, I have to slalom to avoid them all.
Tip, it's better to go in the outside lane and the inside lane has some unmissable monsters. You will have to have your wits about you to avoid the ones on the outside lane though!
Bloody hell thats a bad one Dee
Quite a few nasty ones round here, including a major one round the corner where a whole section of the road seems to have subsided.
What makes my blood boil is the endlessly increasing revenue from motorists and fuel, yet not a penny of it seems to make its way back into the road infrastructure.
Letter and photos sent, let's see what happens.
